ALL ABOUT OUR INSTRUMENT SETUPS,

AND WHY THEY ARE IMPORTANT

ZIVEC VIOLINS

Frantisek Zivec started making violins in his native Bohemia in the early 1900s, until the events of the Second World War intervened. He joined the Czech underground resistance, and after the war ended escaped to East Germany and eventually the west. You can read more of his exciting story in the beautiful book Violin and Bow Makers of Australia by Alan Coggins (available at Grant Violins for $95).

Very unusually, we have two of Zivec's instruments currently for sale; both are late-period instruments, and both are excellent quality and value, and a real pleasure to play.

CD REVIEWS: ZOE BLACK AND JOE CHINDAMO

The New Goldberg Variations
Adding an extra layer of  counter-point to the Goldberg Variations is a courageous task, requiring a great deal of knowledge of counter-point, harmony and the work itself. Joe Chindamo presents more than just another skilled rendition of the opus; this recording also offers a distinctive point of view from a performer and composer who has clearly known this masterpiece for a life-time. On top of this, there is the surprising and novel addition of the violin line, featuring Zoё Black’s beautifully refined playing.
This arrangement provides the chance to hear a conversation between Bach, pianist and violinist; especially interesting to those who are already very well acquainted with the Variations.

Dido's Lament
On a first read through the track titles, one may assume that this is a cross-genre, easy listening album with something for all tastes. Many of the names sound very familiar; however, the listener may be surprised to discover that this is a new music project. 'Dido’s Lament' comprises fresh creations for the duo which, although based on well-known melodies such as 'Ombra mai fu' and 'Nessun Dorma', have been given an entirely original treatment in these arrangements. There is also one piece completely composed by Chindamo, as well as a Prokofiev duo.  Zoё Black and Joe Chindamo have produced an album filled with masterful performances of authentic contemporary music, creating something entirely unexpected to stimulate and inspire the listener.
