Christmas gift ideas

Earlier this year, our CEO Leonie Jackson was invited to a special meeting at the North Pole. Leonie met with Santa to talk about making his workshop more accessible for deaf elves like adding flashing alerts. While there she got some fantastic Christmas gift ideas from Santa’s deaf elves;

1. For kids – The ‘Just Like You Dolls’ are custom dolls with hearing aid, cochlear implant or BAHA. Now your child can have endless fun with a doll that is just like them. Visit https://www.justlikeyoudolls.com/.

‘Go Home, Cheeky Animals!’ is a lively book about the cheeky animals that visit Canteen Creek and create mischief. The book is illustrated by young Aboriginal deaf man, Dion Beasley. The book is available to order online. Have a look at Dion’s cheeky clothing range too, http://www.cheekydogs.com.au/.

2. For film fans – Buy tickets to an open caption movie of the latest Hollywood movies. There are regular open caption screenings at Events Parramatta and GU Film House Cronulla. For more information and tickets, visit their Facebook pages;
Open Captions Sydney (https://www.facebook.com/ocsyd/)
GU Film House (https://www.facebook.com/cronullacinema/)

3. For art/ theatre fans – More and more theatres are now providing Auslan-interpreted performances. A great show for all ages is “Shrek The Musical” which will be Auslan-interpreted at Riverside Theatre, Parramatta in February 2018. For information and tickets, visit https://riversideparramatta.com.au/show/shrek-the-musical/.
The 2018 Sydney Festival will have 10 Auslan interpreted performances and 2 captioned performances with everything from dance, to circus and cabaret performances. With so much variety, there is an event to suit anyone. For more information and tickets, visit https://www.sydneyfestival.org.au/2018/accessibility#4.

4. For family/ friends – Vivid Expressions have some beautiful Auslan-influenced gift tags which are sure to delight your family and friends. Visit http://vividexpressions.net.au/product/christmas-tags/.
But Auslan is the best gift of all! You can now buy a gift voucher for Auslan beginner courses. Choose an online or face-to-face course both are great fun and provide an introduction to the language of the Australian Deaf Community. For more information, visit https://deafsocietynsw.org.au/.

Auslan on Wheels

Congratulations to the 15 cyclists of the Auslan on Wheels team who completed the 2017 MS Sydney to Wollongong ride last month. It was a courageous effort with the rain adding an extra challenge to the 82km course. The team raised $6,550 to support people with multiple sclerosis (MS). An amazing effort! The Deaf Society is proud to be sponsor of the team and hope this great community initiative will continue.

2018 Australian Deaf Games

The 2018 Australian Deaf Games is fast approaching and the excitement is building. Congratulations to Trevor Boyle who will be the flag bearer for NSW. Trevor will be participating in the table tennis competition. Fun fact – research shows that playing table tennis is great for the brain! It helps develop strategic planning and thinking, concentration, alertness and long term memory.

The Deaf Society is proud to be a sponsor of the Australian Deaf Games. It will be an incredible week of sport and social activities with hundreds of deaf and hard of hearing people. We look forward to seeing you there!

Accessible Arts

Dan Daw: Behind the Beast
You are invited to a FREE, Auslan interpreted event on Sunday 14 January 2017.

Please join as at: “In Conversation with Dan Daw: Behind the Beast” as we chat with acclaimed performer and performance maker Dan Daw. Dan is recognised as a leader in the conversation on dance and disability, and has worked with reputable companies both here and in the UK, from Scottish Dance Theatre to Force Majeure.

Joined by Michelle Silby, Director of Ausdance NSW and Victoria, Dan will share insights into his practice and how he pushes boundaries of mainstream performance to shift perceptions and expectations as an artist with disability.
This event is part of Sydney Festival and is
co-hosted by Accessible Arts.

The event is on 14 January 2018 from 5pm - 6pm at Carriageworks in Sydney. It’s free to attend but you need to register at:
www.sydneyfestival.org.au/dan-daw
We hope to see you there!

In Beast, Dan Daw explores the intersection of ‘normal’ and ‘abnormal’ through the lens of his ‘otherness’. This is a dance piece with minimal music.’ It is accessible as it is purely visual. For more information and to buy tickets visit sydneyfestival.org.au/dan-daw

Sydney Festival
If you’re looking for something to enjoy during January, remember there is the Sydney Festival happening throughout the month, with plenty of interpreted events and some that are captioned!

From Sydney Hyde park to Parramatta there are so many events that you can join, enjoy and experience the festival! I will be going to some of them and I hope you do too!

Keep an eye on Deaf Arts Network NSW on Facebook, where I will post events a week before they’re happening!

For the school holidays fun!
There is a classic pantomime tradition:
Join Harry the miller’s son and his best friend Puss – the smartest, cleverest cat that ever-tasted cream – as they set off on the road to fame and fortune!

In the classic pantomime tradition, Puss in Boots is an ideal treat for a holiday outing this summer. It will captivate little ones and entertain the whole family. Journey with Harry and Puss through the dark woods, past the angry ogre in his castle, all the way to the King’s palace to meet Harry’s true love, beautiful Princess Lill.

The performance will be Auslan Interpreted at the City Recital Hall, Sydney on Friday 12 January at 2pm.
