Accreditation 2018:  An Overview

All residency programs at Queen’s University are accredited, either by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).  The accreditation process ensures that our residency programs meet the highest possible standards and that our resident physicians, upon completion of their programs, will be able to provide outstanding care to the people of Canada.

Through a rigorous and detailed examination of our residency programs, accreditation assures residents that they will ultimately be prepared to sit their CFPC and RCPSC examinations and that they will have been assisted in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for practice.

The teams of surveyors who will actually review our programs during accreditation will be comprised of medical educators drawn from schools across the country.   Our Family Medicine programs will be reviewed by a team while the specialty programs will be reviewed by one reviewer, a specialist in a field other than the one being reviewed.  Reviewers are very knowledgeable about the standards of accreditation and CanMEDS roles.

In advance of the on-site visit (March 4-9, 2018), the pre-survey questionnaires submitted by Queen’s will be reviewed.  All faculty and residents here should be sure to review their own program’s PSQ well before accreditation.  The survey teams will then visit Queen’s (in addition to our sites in Belleville, Peterborough, and Oshawa) and examine each program, interviewing program directors and administrators, residents, teaching staff, and residency program committees.  An accreditation status will then be recommended and a written report will be provided, usually six weeks after the visit.

Accreditation is a lengthy and comprehensive process but the end goal is the assurance that the training you receive at Queen’s is of the highest possible standard.  We welcome your questions and comments about the process at Queen’s so please do not hesitate to contact the Postgraduate Medical Education Office at 613-533-2543 or by email at pgme@queensu.ca.

IDEAS Foundations of Quality Improvement

Queen's residents are invited to register for the IDEAS Foundations of Quality Improvement program.  It will provide you with the knowledge and tools to effectively participate in and contribute to quality improvement projects within or across health care organizations. Participants are introduced to a common language and approach to quality improvement with the explicit goal to improve patient care, experience and outcomes.

Counselling Resources for Residents

This is a reminder that residents have access to a counselling service provided by the School of Medicine and Queen’s Student Health Services (SHS).  There is a designated counsellor for the School of Medicine who meets with students and residents who are experiencing feelings of stress and pressure in their daily lives.  These feelings can interfere with a resident’s ability to function effectively, and may prevent them from achieving at their full potential.

SHS offers a range of services including evidence-based approaches for treating anxiety disorders, depression, and other diagnosable mental health issues. Residents who may not have a mental health problem, but who are experiencing difficulties/stresses or any other concerns that affect their ability to work and learn during their training may also be seen at SHS. Counselling may also be conducted in combination with psychotropic medications, prescribed by your physician. Residents may be referred to a physician in Queen's SHS if they wish to explore this possibility.

It is important to highlight that therapy is not exclusive to those with a mental health problem. If you are working to develop good habits and maintain healthy self-care strategies, SHS can assist you with this process as preventative measures are important to both overall physical and mental health. Dealing with smaller issues may assist in establishing effective self-care strategies for the duration of training and throughout one’s career.

Services are provided through SHS’s office in the LaSalle building at 146 Stuart Street.  As such, services are provided at arm’s length from the School of Medicine for the purposes of maintaining anonymity and confidentiality. Appointments may be requested by contacting Counselling Services at 613.533.6000 ext. 78264 or counselling.services@queensu.ca. Therapy / counselling is available free of charge.  Additionally, sessions may be via phone for those who are unable to attend sessions in person.  One initial face-to-face session is often preferable prior to scheduling these alternatives.

Residents are also reminded that our Director of Resident Affairs, Dr. Melissa Andrew, is also available for appointments.  Dr. Andrew provides confidential support for residents and a description of her services are available online.  Appointments with Dr. Andrew can be requested by contacting her at learnerwellness@queensu.ca or by phone at (613) 533-6000 x78451.

CBME Update

CBME is in full swing at Queen’s, and almost every program has a designated CBME Resident Lead.  The CBME Resident Lead’s job is to assist residents and faculty with the CBME transition—whether it be technical questions, or help with understanding the new CBME curriculum, these residents are here as a resource for you.  Each CBME Resident Lead sits on the CBME Resident Subcommittee and is involved with various projects promoting resident engagement and CBME.  If you’d like to become involved with the subcommittee, or with CBME scholarship, please contact Jen Railer at Jennifer.railer@queensu.ca

Notary Public Available

Residents and faculty members who need the services of a Notary Public or Commissioner of Oaths are reminded that those services are provided free of charge by the Postgraduate Medical Education Office.  Christine McCallum is available to assist, and she can be contacted at christine.mccallum@queensu.ca to make an appointment.  She can assist with documents such as CPSO Independent License applications and elective paperwork for other provinces.

Transfer Information

Every year, residents decide for a variety of reasons to apply to transfer to a new residency program either at Queen’s or at another university.  Transfer requests are most commonly received from PGY1 residents and the PGME Office begins to receive inquires about the transfer process almost immediately after the beginning of each new academic year.

If you are a PGY1 resident already thinking about transferring, you should be aware that you must spend at least six months in your current program before any application can be made to transfer.  This period ensures that you have had sufficient exposure to your residency program to make an informed decision.  If you still wish to transfer after six months, then you may contact the PGME Office to discuss a potential transfer to another program or university.  You will be able to discuss your situation and the transfer process with Denise Jones, the PGME Program Manager, in complete confidence.

In the meantime, our office would encourage you to consult the transfer policy on the postgraduate website.  You should also consider discussing any concerns about your current program with your Program Director.   It’s their job to support you during residency and offer you all possible help and guidance.

Promotional Videos

The PGME Office produces a variety of promotional videos each year to assist our residency programs in recruiting the very best residents to Queen's.  They are all available on our YouTube channel.  Among the new videos this year is a video profiling some of our sponsored visa trainees from the middle east.
