Patricia Beatty Retires After 47 Years

Rarely do you find someone who has spent his or her entire adult life dedicated to one ministry. Patricia Beatty is one of those people and has been part of CEF for nearly a half century.
Patricia began her ministry at CEF International Headquarters where she responded to letters from children writing in from CEF's television program, The Treehouse Club. Next she served as a training instructor then chapter director in Akron, Ohio, followed by Leadership Training Instructor at CEF's Christian Ministries Institute. Next Patricia was CEF's training ministry director in New York City for nine years. She moved to the Cincinnati area in 2000 as our chapter's director where she organized ministry outreach for Good News Clubs, 5-Day clubs and county fair ministries.
We have been blessed by such a faithful servant dedicated to spreading the gospel among children. Her heart for children and love for the Lord are evident to all who have worked with Patricia and we are grateful for all she has done.

The Wordless Book, a CEF Staple

Many of you may be familiar with The Wordless Book used to share the gospel with children and even adults. It was first designed with only three pages, black, red, and white and was introduced by Charles Spurgeon in 1866. Rev. Spurgeon told of an old unnamed minister who had put three pages together and often looked at them to remind himself of his sinfulness, of Christ’s blood poured out for him, and of the “whiter-than-snow” cleansing provided for him. It is not known when the gold page was added, but it brought another dimension to the book, depicting the love of God and the glories of His heavenly home. D. L. Moody used the book at a children’s service where an estimated 12,000 were present to hear his message on “a book with four leaves–black, red, white and gold.”

Ruth Overholtzer, wife of CEF founder Jesse Overholtzer, discovered the book in 1924. The ministry began printing the book fifteen years later and added green to represent Christian growth. They also published a leaflet with instructions on how to use the book and included Scripture verses on each page.

Although colors have been added over the years, the story it tells has never changed. Each time someone shares The Wordless Book those listening learn about heaven and God’s love for them, the darkness of sin, the blood of Christ, a clean heart and how to grow in Christ., The book now comes in many forms such as a flipper flapper, airplane and bracelet, but the message is always the same. In 2016 alone, CEF distributed over 40,000 versions of The Wordless Book.
