Danielle Van Meter's WHY STORYTELLERS HAVE THE MOST IMPORTANT JOB 10/25/17

As humans, we are driven by a narrative arch. We are constantly telling ourselves stories about our own lives, our circumstances, what the other person was thinking about us, and how our lives could become better. And, as in any other field, we look to the best of the profession—storytellers—that will coax us into other stories and give us a completely different viewpoint by the end of it. As writers, illustrators, and any other form of storytellers, we must know what a great and grave responsibility this is—to draw our readers to tales that not only resonate with the confused parts of their souls, but also make those tricky parts win out against all odds. We must know why stories are compelling, dig within ourselves, and seek to connect our consumers with things that matter as though it is their lifeline. Sometimes, it is. Read More

Tony Nesca's WHY I WRITE 11/29/17

So…the other day I went for a walk, late afternoon, early grey settling in, everything looking grim and happy at the same time, wondering why I write, why would I, or anyone else, put words down on paper, for what bizarre, perverted, self-possessed reason would anyone give a damn what I have to say? William C. Crawford's BANNED BY BOOKMARKS! MY SHARED BOOK SIGNING WITH JOHN GRISHAM 11/22/17

We were finally getting a national class, independent book store. As an active writer, I couldn't wait to get plugged in, and I wanted to contribute. Nonprofits can always use more cash. So I offered up unlimited copies my Vietnam memoir. All proceeds would stay with BookMarks, not a penny for me! Read More
Maxima Kahn's 3 WILDLY HELPFUL TOOLS TO SUPPORT YOUR CREATIVE LIFE 11/15/17

Every Wednesday night for the past 15 years (with some breaks and gaps) I have been meeting with a small group of dancers to dance, explore dance ideas and make performance pieces. And, almost every Wednesday by 6:00 p.m. as I’m finishing work, I think to myself, “I’m tired. I just want to stay home with a good book and my sweetheart.” But, I go to rehearsal anyway. Why? Ann S. Epstein's HOW MUCH BACKGROUND DETAIL IS ESSENTIAL FOR AUTHENTICITY IN HISTORICAL FICTION 11/8/17

I write historical fiction, novels and short stories, often inspired by quirky events. For example, during “Squirrel Week,” the California Horticulture Department urged schoolchildren to kill ground squirrels during a seven-day period in 1918. (Squirrels destroyed crops needed to feed the troops overseas.) In the “Great Stork Derby,” an eccentric millionaire left a large sum of money to whichever Toronto woman gave birth to the most children in the ten years following his death on Halloween, 1926. (Many families who entered, and lost, the contest, were left raising children they couldn’t support during the Depression.) Read More
Clifford Browder's AUTHORS ARE WHORES 11/1/17

Yes, authors are whores. A bit strained as an analogy, perhaps, but think about it. Big presses and small demand that their authors participate actively in marketing. Just as streetwalkers offer their bodies to whoever is interested, so authors like myself have to promote themselves online or in person, marketing their books to the public. Yes, there are differences: whores offer their bodies, whereas authors offer books. But those books are part of you, cooked up in your brain and spun out of your gut. To push the analogy even further, you’re offering your babies, your offspring, your dearest, most cherished progeny. Read More
