What's Going On At NCTR?

NCTR’s New Site Development (NSD) team was in New Orleans this week visiting the Norman C. Francis Teacher Residency (NCFTR). The NSD team observed resident and mentor teaching, analyzed implementation data to help NCFTR staff adjust their program design and delivery, and helped the program create a high-impact hiring strategy for its graduates.

A Project Inspire graduate, Anthony Zermeno, was featured in Teach Today. Change Tomorrow, a campaign designed to attract younger students to the teaching profession. Anthony, who teaches Algebra 2, says “The best part of teaching is finding those students who share a piece of the same love for math as I do. I have a very special place in my heart for students who simply love what math reveals to them.”

Seattle Teacher Residency (STR)’s recent Resident Spotlight blog features Chanelle Braswell, who said, “I chose STR because their values align with my own values for equity and social justice. In Seattle Public Schools, teachers of color make up 20% of the pool, which is in direct contrast with the 55% of students of color. I think it is important to have a diverse pool of educators with diverse experiences which students see a reflection of themselves in.”

Louisiana Will Train 500 Mentor Teachers to Support Residencies

This week, 500 Louisiana teachers will begin training as residency mentor teachers through a statewide program designed to build teacher residency-related infrastructure. By July 2018, all of Louisiana’s teacher preparation programs will include yearlong residencies. Louisiana’s Department of Education (Department) announced that it was beginning its search for a pilot group of mentor teacher-trainees last August, and initially aimed to recruit 500 teachers, with a projected 2,000 or more mentors to be trained later. The training will be provided “at the university level, though some private companies also train teachers,” according to The Advocate. The Department reports that by the end of the training period, mentor teachers will be able to:
  • “Build strong relationships with their residents and new and developing teachers;
  • Identify and address the needs of residents and new and developing teachers based on teacher preparation competencies, and;
  • Track residency/new/developing teacher progress and facilitate resident/new/developing teachers self-reflection and improvement.”
The Department launched a Mentor Teacher Library, a digital resource that will host mentor training tools that are available for public use. Read more about Louisiana’s mentor training kick-off in The Daily Comet and The News Star.
