UNA Public History Center
conducting monument survey


As recent events in Charlottesville, Virginia, demonstrate, Confederate monuments are powerful and controversial symbols throughout the South. Given the strong reactions among various community and national stakeholders regarding potential removal, interpretation or alteration to these monuments, public historians want to understand how local residents perceive these monuments. With this research, public historians can help communities find thoughtful & respectful solutions. The University of North Alabama's Public History Center, led by UNA assistant history professor Dr. Brian Dempsey, is conducting an anonymous survey to assess community attitudes regarding the Confederate monument that inhabits civic space in Florence at the Lauderdale County Courthouse. The survey is online, is completely anonymous and needs only a minute to complete. Click here to take the survey, and share it with others.
