DISTRICT 3 NEWS
Vice Mayor John J. Kennedy

Message From Vice Mayor Kennedy

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The year 2017 has been special and exciting.  As we celebrate our 5th year of serving the residents of District 3, we have successfully turned dreams into reality and with the year ending, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families the very best this holiday season and the very best in the New Year.

The holidays extend an occasion to share, and I invite you to join my team and me as we prepare once again to bring joy to hundreds of deserving families in our City. This year, we expanded our efforts with the generosity of our sponsors, by giving away over 1,000 turkeys to our neighbors. While the effort is primarily concentrated in District 3, it has been our practice to serve all who make a request for assistance.

Our Annual Turkey Giveaway and end of the year Holiday Gathering are two rewarding events, and we invite you to take part in the upcoming Community Meeting and Holiday Gathering as a member of an organizing committee, volunteer, or participant observer. Please join us for our information session and holiday festivities at this year’s Community Meeting and Holiday Gathering that will take place at Pasadena’s Central Library on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at 5:00 pm.

Thank you for your continued support and good wishes.  During this season of giving, I wish you and your loved ones the very best in life and pray for your success, joy and contentment.

Respectfully,

John J. Kennedy

Mensaje del Vice Alcalde Kennedy

Queridos Amigos y Vecinos,

Respetuosamente,

John J. Kennedy

Pasadena Public Library Department

The Pasadena Public Library Department is one of ten libraries state wide that has been selected as part of the California State Library’s 2017/18 Early Learning with Families (ELF) initiative to receive a supply of Starlings – a wearable tech device that tracks how many words a child is hearing in a day – as well as staff training and support to pilot various approaches to sharing and/or loaning the devices to families. The Starling Pilot program  will merge early learning and technology in a way that will help families and young children in our community thrive.

Starlings will allow us to provide another method to support our youngest of patrons and their caregivers in a way that is fun, interactive and in line with current research. To determine which branches would be best suited for the Starling Pilot Program, the Library will focus its efforts in a three part approach: looking at areas of need (using Early Development Instrument data), areas of saturation within the community, and staff training.

Future Changes to the City Council and PUSD Election Cycles

According to Senate Bill 415 also known as the California Voters Participation Rights Act (CVPRA), Pasadena's current election cycle for both City Council and PUSD elections must change to coincide with our statewide election date - i.e. either the statewide direct primary in June of even-numbered years, or the statewide general election in November of even-numbered years.  The purpose of the CVPRA is to increase voter participation in local elections, and the City Council must determine as to whether they amendments to the City's charter are in order to be in compliance with this new law.
   Announcements

~ Vallarta Supermarkets held a festive grand opening of its full-service Pasadena location in the Renaissance Plaza at Fair Oaks Avenue and Orange Grove Boulevard on Wednesday, November 29.

~ The renovation of Robinson Park  Recreation Center continues with completion targeted for late 2018.  The City is working to bridge the approximately $1 million funding gap to complete the renovation.

~ The City continues to explore the idea of bringing more pocket parks - little green spaces embedded into an otherwise built-up neighborhood - to our neighborhoods.  Currently there are over 20 pocket parks throughout the City.  Criteria for a pocket park is a parcel of land up to five acres, the parcel must be further than a quarter of a mile to an existing park with a suitability for park construction and access from an adjacent right of way or public property.

~ One of the largest developments in the history of Pasadena is coming to District 3.  100 W. Walnut St., formerly the Parsons site will be a mixed use village
that would complement the existing office buildings on the site.  The proposed development will include space for office, retail and residential uses.

~ Pasadena was ranked as a top city in the 2017 Digital Cities Survey.  This is the third time Pasadena has been recognized as a technologically progressive and innovative city when compared to other cities of similar size.  Our newly designed website, investment in mobile devices for City operations, open access to City data and collaborations with the community were highlighted in the survey results and contributed to our selection.

Congratulations to Chief Information Officer Phillip Leclair and his department on an outstanding job!

~ The Pasadena Public Library selection for the "One City One Story" community reading celebration is the New York Times bestselling book Rise of the Rocket Girls: The Women Who Propelled Us, From Missiles to the Moon to Mars by author Nathalia Holt.
