Dear Friend,

If you ask an Italian where the best food is, you'll likely always get the same answer, "At my mother's house!" ... with a look as if to say, "How could you be so stupid to not know that??" But if you push it to a regional discussion then the most likely answer will be, Emilia-Romagna, the wondrous north-central region that lies in the fertile Po River Valley.

Side-by-side: Medici Ermete Lambrusco Concerto Reggiano + Le Rocche Malastiane Sigismondo Sangiovese Superiore

Enticing Emilia Romagna

With such a rich culinary reputation to uphold, it should come as little surprise that the region's wines are made to match. In some instances, perhaps even elevated a little higher...

So what do iconic Emilia wineries Medici Ermete and Le Rocche Malatestiane share in common? For one, their flagship wines have both received 🍷🍷🍷 (max score) in Italy's official wine guide, Gambero Rosso.

Care to try them? Look no further...

Medici Ermete Concerto Reggiano

This is not the first time we've highlighted Medici's Lambrusco Concerto Reggiano. Yet despite being over three-and-a-half years later, we're offering it for 15% less than we were then.

This is REAL Lambrusco and old ideas about this wine must be thrown out with Concerto. It is the traditional red wine of Bologna and Modena, and has now returned its old style, thus undergoing a transformation to what it should be. The red Lambrusco grape is capable of producing a scrumptious wine. It is a dry, red and with a complete sparkle; it is a full, juicy mouth filling wine that is a brilliant accompaniment to rich cuisine.

Vintage: 2016

Grapes: 100% Lambrusco

Colour: Deep purple colour.
Nose: Pleasant and persistent bouquet with hints of violets.
Taste: Rich and smoky, well-knit and dry, with hints of ground anise, grilled herb and cocoa powder accenting the mulled plum and black cherry puree notes. The tangy finish shows herb and spice hints.

Food: Particularly suitable to accompany grilled meats, pork and all dishes typical of its area of origin. Excellent with Parmesan or Grana Padano and medium-ripe cheeses.

Background:

For more than one hundred years the name of the Medici family has been synonym with excellent Lambrusco and quality wine. At the beginning of the 20th Century Remigio, the founder, set up a wine cellar for the production of Lambrusco with the purpose of exploiting in the best possible way the family's vineyards, situated between the Via Emilia and the first slopes of the Enza valley. His son, Ermete, was then responsible for marketing and expanding this brand. Today, the fourth generation of the Medici family still shows the same passion and skill every day in the vineyard as well as in the cellars that have made them protagonists in the world of wine.

Le Rocche Malatestiane Sigismondo

By contrast, the Sigismondo Sangiovese Superiore is a recent addition to our range. That said, it stands tall as a proud example of the Sangiovese varietal, transcending the humble Rubicone status so typically associated with the region.

The producer brings a wealth of experience to the wine, highlighted by the background section, below.

Vintage: 2015

Grapes: 100% Sangiovese di Romagna

Colour: Sangiovese Superiore Sigismondo's colour is intense ruby-red with a garnet rim.
Nose: Its bouquet is perfumed with scents of violet, red fruit, plum and sour cherry.
Taste: Nose characteristics are reflected on the palate, which is well-structured, powerful and complemented by persistent and harmonious tannins.

Food: A substantial red for serving with roast red meats and game, as well as risottos.

Background:

Le Rocche Malatestiane is located in Rimini, on the Adriatic coast and has its wine production areas on the hills overlooking the sea. Le Rocche Malatestiane has always represented the wine producing roots of the Rimini area and it is with pride that since 1959 the company and its wines carry the name of the Malatesta family, Signoria (nobles) of Rimini from the 13th to the 15th century.

The Malatesta, especially Sigismondo Pandolfo, were great leaders and patrons and, thanks to them, works of art and architecture were made such as the strongholds and fortresses that can be seen on the hills, where the vines are cultivated.

The wines of Le Rocche Malatestiane are produced by 500 growers who directly farm 800 hectares of vineyards spread over the hills of Rimini’s province, from the upper Val Marecchia to the hinterland of Cattolica, on the border between Romagna and Marche.

From this wealth of vineyards the best DOC Colli di Rimini and DOC Romagna grapes are produced. This land appears like a mosaic of terroirs, differing from one another in terms of altitude, type of soil and relative distance from the sea.

Since 2011, through the project "Land of Sangiovese from Rimini", the company has worked at redeveloping its identity by focusing on the Sangiovese grape, which most distinguishes it since it represents over 70% of the local production.

After analysing the soils, three major zone and terroirs were identified. This, combined with new methods of grape selection and separate vinification in the winery, produced an interpretation of this grape variety that better highlighted its characteristics and terroirs of origin.

Alongside the production of Sangiovese Le Rocche Malatestiane also cultivates and produces wines from native grapes such as Rebola, Pagadebit and Biancame as well as from international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, all of which have found a positive expression in the Rimini area.

It is of particular interest that the company’s cultural roots and passion for the territory have led to the restoration of a magnificent underground cave in the heart of Monte Giove, the hill on which Santarcangelo di Romagna stands, in the Province of Rimini. Here Le Rocche Malatestiane refines the Sangiovese “Sigismondo”, in special conditions of temperature stability and balance which have greatly contributed to making this an extraordinary wine.
