A Conversation about White Privilege
From Left to Right: Lorena, Andrea, and Taurino
(click on the picture to watch a video of the panel)

On Saturday, November 4th, Looking for Lilith Theatre Company put on a play called "Carefully Taught", which focuses on two schoolteachers, one African American and one White, whose friendship and lives are affected by racial issues in the school.

Our student Ambassadors watched the play and spoke on the panel after to discuss white privilege and discrimination.  This was a time for people in the audience to ask honest questions in a safe space and engage in a dialogue on race in America. Our Ambassadors spoke about personal experiences and gave insightful perspectives on current issues and the everyday reality of their lives.

We would like to thank Looking for Lilith Theatre Company for inviting our students to speak on their panel after the show. The performance was amazing, and our students enjoyed leading and being a part of the authentic conversation.
Reaching for the Stars
This month our Ambassadors had the opportunity to hear from José Hernandez, an Astronaut with an amazing story. Hernandez was born in a family of migrant farm workers and spent his childhood moving from Mexico to different parts of California.  Though he was rejected 11 times from NASA, his twelfth application was finally selected, and he became an astronaut.

His testimony is one of dedication, discipline, and perseverance.  Our student Ambassadors met with Sr. Hernandez one-on-one, asked questions, and heard his words of wisdom. He shared his "6 Steps to Success"  and his "3 Stages of Reaching Your Goals", and gave them a powerful message on overcoming obstacles in their lives.

This was an unforgettable experience for our Ambassadors and staff, and one that will have a lasting impact on us all. We would like to thank the Hispanic Forum at GE, A Haier Company for inviting us and our students to attend this wonderful event. We appreciate your continuous support of our organization and our students.

November Programs
To kick off November, Adelante visited La Casita Center to learn about Abraham in the Qur'an. This was a truly enlightening experience for all of our students. Dr. Riffat Hassan has taught college classes on Islam for over 30 years, and during the workshop shared so much wisdom with our students. We learned that Islam is an Abrahamic faith like Christianity and Judaism, that the division of Sunni and Shia Muslims began as a political quarrel, and that Islam is a peaceful faith.
The following Saturday we traveled to Americana Community Center to hear from Minerva Virola, a former Louisville Metropolitan Police Department Officer and FBI agent. Virola spoke to our students about her story, the lack of Latino and minority representation in law enforcement, what the FBI does, and how to join the FBI. Afterward, our students watched a powerful documentary on the opioid epidemic and we discussed the dangers of this drug, the signs that someone is using, and how to get help. It was an inspiring and eye-opening experience.
On our last Saturday in November we took a trip to Indiana and visited Hanover College, a private, co-ed, liberal-arts college with a student body of 1,090 students.  Hanover is one of Adelante's College Allies and offers  a four year renewable scholarship to a graduating Adelante student every year.

Our students and family members enjoyed every second of their visit. The Hanover students and staff were fantastic and made our visit unforgettable. Thank you for all for making the day special.
Thank you to all of our wonderful presenters and guests!
