December 6, 2017

Dear Students, Families, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of ASB School,

Happy St. Nicholas Day and happy start to the Advent season! On Monday, we gathered in the church for our first Advent prayer service.  The 6A students led us in prayer and song, reminding us of the hope that this first week of Advent brings.  Our hope as we await the birth of Jesus at Christmas is reflected in our hope for our students, our hope for our families, our hope for faculty and staff, our hope for each other.  As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Everything that is done in the world is done by hope.”

I know many of you are hoping to see your child’s report card soon.  Report cards will be emailed to you as a PDF through your Alma account about 4:00 this afternoon.  If you have not activated your Alma account, you need to do so to be emailed the report card.  Please direct any questions you have to your classroom teacher.  We are proud of the hard work and grit demonstrated by our students during the first trimester and are hopeful for what the second and third trimester will bring!

I am so grateful to each of you for all you do for ASB.  Yesterday, I was a part of a phone conference for another school who is working on their next strategic plan.  As I shared what we offer at ASB, what differentiates us from other schools, and about the ways we serve our students, I could feel and hear how impressed the interviewer was with our school.  The visiting committee from our accreditation had the same impression.  Their report particularly emphasized our specialty and support teachers, our staffing, and our ability to provide music, drama, art, choir, band, sports, clubs, and student support.  This is not the case for most Catholic schools and we are so fortunate to have the teachers, staff, programs, and resources that we do.  It sets us apart and allows us to offer an education through which our students thrive.

As we head towards the auction this weekend, our fund-a-need in particular encourages us to continue to build hope for ASB’s future.  This year, our fund-a-need is increasing our endowment. An endowment is a fund that ensures the sustainability of a school or non-profit organization through long-term investments. The initial “principal” amount established in an endowment fund is invested to generate income. The school may draw on the interest that is generated from your investments but the principal is never drawn upon so it will continue to generate income for the school for years to come.  At the end of last school year, the total value of our endowment funds was $840,00.  Our goal is to raise $160,000, which would push our total value to the $1 million mark!  Once we reach at least $1 million, we will have the potential to begin drawing on the interest to continue to bolster our programs and ensure that we continue to live our mission of providing an ASB education that is affordable and accessible to all who desire it.  Thank you in advance for your support of our auction this weekend!  The generosity, gifts of time and talent, and incredible work that go into this event reflect the hope we have for the future of ASB.

I hope to see you on Saturday!  Have a wonderful week!

Best,
Kathleen Conklin

This is the third year that the ASB Auction has been held off-site and not in the Assumption Gym. Over the years it has been amazing to watch the gym turn into a ball room fitting the ASB Auction. While I always enjoyed watching this transformation, it also meant that our program had to move out of the gym and that for the week, Extended Care was displaced. I so appreciate the auction and all of the work that goes into this event, and it is also really nice for our program to be able to remain home and use the gym during this cold and blustery season. Thank you to the auction chairs, and all of the many volunteers that make our auction such an amazing success.

For the next two weeks, Extended Care will be operating under its normal hours, then we will close again on December 20 for the Christmas Holiday.  Similarly to us being closed over Thanksgiving, Extended Care is only licensed to operate during hours when school is in session.  This requires us to close when the school closes.  Thank you for understanding.

As I mentioned last week, Extended Care is incredibly excited to welcome back to Seattle and back to ASB Extended Care, Lily Taliaferro. Lily will rejoin our staff in the next few weeks and will stay on with Extended Care as she starts at the UW.  Welcome home Lily!!

Extended Care will be CLOSED on the upcoming dates, please plan accordingly:
Wednesday, December 20 at 12 noon
Thursday December 21, 2017 -Tuesday, January 2, 2018

  • Please turn in your Extended Care registration forms for the 2017-2018 School year.
  • Extended Care will be CLOSEDWednesday, December 20, at 12:00 noon.Day.  It will remain closed for the Christmas Holiday.

Please join us for the ASB Christmas Concert!
Join us for a night of music as our band, choir & students in grades 1-3 perform Thursday, December 14th at 7:00pm at St. Bridget's.  All students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades, Choir, and Concert Band are expected at this mandatory event.  If you have any questions please contact Mr. Van Pelt and Mr. Turner.  We hope to see you all there!
