‘HEAD’ Lines

‘The boy who cried wolf’

Dear parents/carers
There have been a couple of incidents over the last week that have concerned me greatly. Both have been to do with communication home. On these two occasions, which are by no means isolated, a member of my staff was not able to make contact with any of the named adults listed as contacts on our school system.

  • Some calls were not answered
  • Some numbers were invalid
  • Some numbers did not have an answer machine facility

We also have the issue, and thankfully it is only an infrequent one, of some adult contacts either not answering the phone or hanging up when they realise it is the school calling, but they will readily answer a call from their child, hence the title of this week’s HEADLines.

We may have to phone home to the parents/carers of some students more often than others. However, if the issue we are making contact about is serious and we cannot get through the consequences of not being able to make contact could be equally serious.

Our number one priority at John Hanson, above all else, is to make sure your child is safe and therefore we take all aspects of health and safety seriously. If we are not able to contact one of the adults that has been designated as a contact we cannot guarantee the health and safety of your child at all times while they are at school.

I apologise if the tone of what I am writing this week seems a little less positive than usual or it feels like I am pointing the finger at you as parents/carers – this is not my intension. However, communication to and from school and the strong working relationship between school and home that it helps develop is absolutely critical in any child’s educational experience.

Therefore, can I please ask that you make sure at least one of the adults listed as a contact for your child can be contacted at all times while your child is in school.

To end on a really positive note, I have noticed that 98% of all parents/carers are now signed up to our Parent Mail communication system and most are proactively using it to take an active part in their child’s school life – thank you

Enjoy the weekend with your children

Year 9 PSHE Day 2

Year 9 spent PSHE day 2 learning about topics related to consent and pregnancy and throughout the day they attended 6 sessions.

Underage pregnancy
In this lesson we learnt about how difficult it is to raise a baby at a young age. We learnt about some real life stories and experiences of teens that went through an underage pregnancy. We also discussed some misconceptions that people have about underage pregnancy.

The cost of having a baby
In this lesson we learnt about how expensive it is to raise a child over the course of its first year, and until it is 18. We enjoyed using the catalogues to find out how much it would cost to buy the essentials for babies.

Choice debate
In this lesson we learnt about the choices you have if you get pregnant. We then took part in a role play activity which looked at what choices different people such as family and friends might think are better.

Consent
In this lesson we learnt about consent, and when it is and isn't ok to have sex with someone. We played a true or false quiz with different statements and this was a fun way of us learning important things to do with consent. This led to lots of group discussions which made us want to get more involved and helped us to learn things in more detail.

Contraception and the bump
In this lesson we learnt about different forms of contraception. We took part in an activity where we had to decide which type of contraception would be best suited to people of different ages. We enjoyed this session as it was interesting because we learnt a lot of new things.

Beliefs and the test
In this lesson we learnt about pregnancy tests and what to do if you get pregnant or get someone else pregnant. We were given a slip with a scenario and we had to decide what we would do in different situations.

Well done to Year 9 on their excellent engagement throughout the day and thank you to the students who contributed to the report.

Tree planting at Harmony Wood
On Thursday 30th November six enthusiastic year 8 students donned their wellies and wrapped up warm to plant some young trees in the freezing ground at Harmony Wood, Enham Alamein.

After digging up the young trees from the school’s tree nursery beds they were taken up to Harmony Wood to join thousands of other trees which have been planted by pupils from the Andover area.

John Hanson students have been supporting Andover Trees United with creating a wooded wildlife refuge since its start in 2011. The aim of Harmony Woods is to provide a resource for all to learn about and care for our natural environment.

Our six students not only planted trees that we had been looking after but also planted a fruit tree and assisted some primary school children with a fun treasure hunt around the site. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day even if it was a bit cold!
