Federal Tax Changes: If the current version of the new tax package passes, Texas A&M could have an additional $15M to pay in connection to new FB HC Fisher's 10-year, $75M deal due to a new 20% excise hit on salaries of $1M or more at universities. LEAD1 CEO McMillen: "Certainly our schools, if they have to choose between a great football team and getting a coach that’s going to deliver that and making cuts elsewhere, they’re probably going to make cuts elsewhere." New York-based attorney Hutcher expects schools to restructure HC deals to mitigate the tax burden. Washington AD Cohen: "This is happening really quickly. I’m not sure any of us are well prepared to figure out how to manage." (link); Florida's Gator Boosters Executive Director Pharr delivered a letter to donors promoting the option of prepaying for the 2018 FB season before the 2017 calendar year ends or to "make a 'lump-sum prepayment' that would serve as credit for future years." (link); More notes from Inside Higher Ed on the machinations of the bill in the House & its impact on higher ed, of note, "Another amendment would have made Pell Grant funding mandatory -- meaning it would be authorized in law permanently -- and boosted the maximum grant by $500 while indexing the value of the grant to inflation, an aim of many Democrats and student aid advocates." More. (link)
New Houston AD Pezman: "Every step I took along the way was intentional with the hope of being able to come back here. […] I don't plan on being here for one year or four years. This is my life. This is home." UH Board chair Fertitta: "We decided we were going to do this quick, make the right decision and move forward. We think Chris is the guy to take us to the next step. Chris wants to be here. Chris wants to help us get into a Power Five conference. [...] I would be extremely surprised if 10 years from now we aren't talking about national championships that we have in different sports and Chris is still our AD." No search firm used by the Cougars, Pezman anxious to get engaged with donor base, promises high-level energy. (link); Here's the full video presser. (link)
Anthony Travel’s parent company, On Location Experiences, announced that it has bought PrimeSport. On Location’s partners now include more than 150 rights holders across sports and entertainment. Of note: The NFL (incl. Super Bowl, Pro Bowl), the NCAA (incl. Final Four), PGA of America (incl. Ryder Cup), Rose BowlUSTA (incl. US Open,) the Daytona 500, plus over 100 DI college/university partners. On Location boss Collins: "PrimeSport was the biggest shark in the water. They have the inventory to the best events. As rights holders, we know what it takes to create a better experience. Together, we are a formidable pairing." Overall, On Location will count $550M in top-live revenue with the new deal. (link)
Colorado State AD Parker gets a five-year extension that includes a bump in base pay from $350K to $400K. "That ranks Parker's compensation third among Mountain West athletic directors...It's also among the top 25 percent of athletic directors at schools in Group of 5 conferences." Prez Frank points to Parker's student-first mentality, a "shared commitment to excellence" & overall "thoughtful and focused leadership." New pact runs through 2022. (link)
New TCU boss Donati plans to dig in & learn alongside key Horned Frogs HCs Patterson, Dixon & Schlossnagle as he takes the reigns in Ft. Worth. "I may be their boss technically, but I don’t see it that way. My job is to serve them, and if I do that, they’ll be successful and they’ll be happy. [...] we’re going to get a chance when the dust settles to really sit down and kind of go over their program from A to Z, and where they are, and where they’re headed, and what I can do to support that." Interesting note from Schlossnagle, who sent a text to Houston peer Whitting about Donati when the Cougars' AD job came open, "I didn’t know that he was the AD in waiting. I knew he was an AD in waiting. I said, 'you need to get this guy.' I’m glad they didn’t make a run at him because now he’s our athletic director." (link); Former TCU AD & new Texas boss Del Conte took out a full page ad in the Star-Telegram to thank the Horned Frogs family. (link)
Tulsa AD Gragg, post-Arkansas interview, "Just like with anything that you set out to get and you don’t get it, there’s some disappointment. But like I told people there, I have a great situation here. I’ve enjoyed it and I was fortunate enough to get a contract extension (a five-year deal that took effect July 2016). … We’re just going to continue with the work we’ve got going on now and we’re looking forward to the future." Gragg points to some the top leaders in the business, like Oklahoma's Castiglione & Ohio State's Smith, as having detractors, understands it comes with the territory. (link); More in a Q&A, Gragg notes the naturally small donor base for the Golden Hurricane, but still wants to expand the support lines. Points to negotiations starting soon for the AAC next TV deal. A bit more. (link)
Eye-opening headline from the Salt Lake City Tribune's Monson: "Is religious bias keeping BYU out of a P5 conference?" Here's the perspective of former Cougars AD Fehlberg: "There are lots of possible reasons, but … I don’t think it’s very complicated. This is no more than good old-fashioned religious discrimination that masquerades as academic snobbery or some sort of enlightened interest that keeps BYU out. It’s too bad because BYU needs to be in one of those conferences and deserves to be there. When you get away from the cameras and microphones, everybody agrees. When I was out there trying to get us in the Pac-10 in the mid-90s, you would sit and listen to the athletic directors and the coaches and they could not be more complimentary of BYU. They said BYU puts more people in seats and does more to energize us and our programs than anybody else except our natural rivals, and, in some cases, more than our natural rivals. We hear that all the time." Well then. (link)
The Athletic's Luginbill goes in on FB's early signing period, lots of unknowns, but expects three types of prospective student-athletes to ink: 1) The long-term verbal commitment; 2) The new verbal commitment; and, 3) The silent verbal. One of Luginbill's main points, "A contrary opinion as it relates to Group of 5 programs is that those schools may sign more than the Power 5 programs given the caliber of talent and type of player they are pursuing that most Power 5 schools are not (the two- and three-star prospect). But with no precedent, these signing trends aren't easy to predict today." More on the uncertainty of the new window. (link)

USA Today's Schrotenboer writes on ESPN Events' impact on the bowl landscape, which now owns & operates 13 of the 40 post-season match-ups, up from just three back in 2005. Schrotenboer: "The bowl games collectively paid out about $622 million to conferences and schools last season, including $441 million from the Playoff alone, according to NCAA financial records reviewed by USA TODAY Sports. After $105 million in expenses, the conferences and schools took home a $517 million 'profit.'" Stanford economist Noll calls the ESPN bowls "made for TV," but ESPN Events VP Overby frames it as, "What really gets missed sometimes is that college football is wholly unique in that it has a full-on celebration of its season every year at the end of the year through the bowl system." (link)

Auburn's Title IX office to former Softball AHC Myers back in August, "We have determined there is sufficient evidence ... to conclude that you violated the policy prohibiting 'pursuing or engaging in romantic relationships' with more than one student whom you supervised or taught while you were employed as associate head coach of the softball program. We have considered the nature of the violations, which we found to have occurred with more than one student and over an extended period, and have determined that the appropriate sanction is that you are not eligible for rehire by the university at any time. You are banned from campus property and may not attend any university events. Further, you are forbidden from attending any Auburn University softball-related activities or events, whether on- or off-campus." Myers received the update just days before his father, the program's HC, resigned. More. (link)
Utah AD Hill reflects on his hire of former Utes FB HC & current Ohio State boss Meyer back in 2003, "My wife said, 'I told him that he was your No. 1 choice.' I was like, you’re not helping my negotiating power.'" Hill says the overall strategy at the time was to raise the profile of his department with conference expansion in the cards, "We wanted to put ourselves in position to be attractive to people, and football was a big part of it. The whole goal was to make it easy, to help make it an easy decision for (the Pac-10). Once they had interest in Colorado, we were the obvious win for them to be the second choice. […] Everything we did was designed to help get us into that league. We wanted to be dressed and ready." Hill believes if Meyer would have passed on heading to Salt Lake City, "it would have taken us longer" to build for P5 access. (link)
More HC Notes: James Madison AD Bourne pops a 10-year (!) extension for FB HC Houston. No word on buyout terms...yet. (link);  New Nebraska FB HC Frost will indeed coach UCF in its Peach Bowl tilt against Auburn, "These aren’t ideal circumstances, but we’re all dialed in and committed...We’re going to be as committed or more committed than if nothing changed." (link); Weber State FB HC Hill's new deal includes an increase in guaranteed pay up to $275K, making him the highest-paid Big Sky boss. More in the article, including incentive terms. (link); UConn FB HC Edsall's son, Corey, can return to the program in 2018 as tight ends coach with the state nepotism case still being reviewed. (link); South Dakota has a new Women's Soccer HC in Cal State Fullerton AC Thomas. (link); Kansas State FB HC Snyder plans to return next season. (link); USA Today's Wolken with his 10 observations from the FB HC carousel, includes "it wasn't as crazy as it could have been," believes the SEC got stronger & that the Tennessee search "will reverberate for a long time," already goes in on what we could see this time next year. (link)
Facilities: SMU has reached the 80% funding level to begin construction on an indoor practice facility for FB. Shovels should hit the ground in March. (link); Creighton AD Rasmussen plans to build a $4.5M Women's Practice Facility that will be used primarily by WBB and Volleyball. (link); Wisconsin Volleyball sold out 15 of 16 home games for an average of 5,980 fans this season, which is 99.5% of the Field House's 6,012 capacity. Accordingly, the Badgers will open balcony seating for next year. In 2014 the projected cost of bringing the entire balcony up to code was $315K-330K, and opening the whole space would increase capacity by 3,116 seats. Initial plans call for only the balcony areas along the sides of the court to be opened. (link)
Niche, but super important topic with a looming vote tomorrow, "How Does The FCC’s Deregulation Of Net Neutrality Impact College Athletics?" Arkansas professor Dittmore's thesis: "...a post-net neutrality world will likely trigger two highly intertwined events, both of which could have great impact on consumers of college sports, and should be pertinent to athletic administrators. First, access to the Internet in general might be reduced while access to specific content on the Internet may cost consumers more. Second, the dominant broadband providers (e.g., Comcast) stand to benefit most from this arrangement and this helps explain why vertical convergence, such as the proposed AT&T-Time Warner merger, is occurring in the media industry." Lots more analysis. (link)
TV/OTT: We could hear an official announcement on the Disney-21st Century Fox deal as soon as tomorrow. (link); ESPN boss Skipper notes Nielsen's new Total Audience metric showing the Worldwide Leader is actually up this year from a ratings standpoint, "We don’t have less people watching ESPN than last year, we have more. They’re just watching in different ways." On the coming ESPN Plus OTT play, "It’s a way to take all that you love about ESPN and add more to it. It will have a sort of Netflix-like aggregation of multi-part documentary series, visits behind the scenes." Says the CFP has "resparked interest in college FB." More. (link); Pivotal's Wieser has overall college FB viewing down 2% to date year over year. (link); Notable money voice Cramer thinks Fox's RSNs will fuel ESPN Plus, also can see a day where Disney spins off its Media Networks division, which includes the ESPN family. (link); While everyone is focused on Disney-Fox, Apple is "raiding" top talent from Hulu & Legendary. (link)

Florida AD Stricklin opens up about hiring former Mississippi State FB HC Mullen to lead the Gators. On his month-long search: "It was pretty stressful. You’re like in a cave. Even when you’re out in public you don’t feel normal." About the dynamics of hiring Mullen away from MSU, where Stricklin went to school and previously served as AD: "That was a dominant part of my thoughts when I would think about Dan. I didn’t worry could Dan do the job, I didn’t worry would he fit in here or would he understand the culture, any of that piece. Certainly didn’t [question] could he fix our offense and develop quarterbacks. A lot of my time when I thought about Dan was the Mississippi State piece and seeming disloyal to my alma mater. That still bothers me. I’ve had a lot of people from Mississippi that I know will never forgive me for that, and I’ve had several friends from Mississippi reach out with some really nice notes and they get it and understand. ... It’s unfortunate that the paths had to converge this way, but when I would get uncomfortable with it I also would remind myself that I’m the athletic director at the University of Florida and I have to do what’s best for Florida. Like I said, I’ve probably lost some friendships that I’ll never get back over it. But that’s OK. Your true friends will understand." (link)
Louisville brass set to meet with the Committee on Infractions today in Atlanta. Interim Prez Postel & Acting AD Tyra will both be in attendance & make statements. WDRB's Crawford breaks down U of L's positions, "U of L will argue on Wednesday that the NCAA set up a system of vacating wins and imposing financial penalties over the course of many years, and that its infractions committee abandoned those structures when it came to handing down penalties for Louisville." Further, pushback will come by way of saying the NCAA did not consider self-imposed penalties, plus the overall sanctions were too stiff & unduly impacts the overall institution. Included in the balance is the 2013 MBB National Championship & a 2012 trip to the Final Four. (link)
Sacred Heart AD Valentine frames the Men's Hockey's move to Webster Bank Arena, "The student-athletes have had an enormously better experience playing games there at Webster rather than where we were. Regionally, we’ve been noticed a little more. Recruits have taken us more seriously.” Thinks a potential 'Connecticut Beanpot' event “would be very special.” University SVP for Athletics & Student Affairs Barquinero thinks there's real momentum behind the possibility of an on-campus facility, also, "We want to do a better job marketing the product, obviously, more viewership, infrastructure. I think we know what to do. Now it’s just a matter of doing it." (link)
San Diego State FB averaged 28,619 fans this season, a 12% increase from 25,440 last year and a 36.5% uptick since 2015's average of 20,961. This year's mark was the highest in 16 years and two weeks ago SDSU announced plans to build a 35K-seat stadium in Mission Valley. The announced attendance average was significantly higher, as 39,347 were distributed on average in 2017. (link)
Toledo sold $120K in beer and wine at home football games at the Glass Bowl this season, profiting $35,632 from the endeavor, slightly higher than last year's $32,249 paycheck. Bowling Green saw $53,737 in gross alcohol sales at Doyt Perry Stadium this season, up from last year's $46,203 but down from the $87,710 mark set in 2015. BGSU made $16K+ after the vendor took its 70% share in 2017. (link); Cal State Northridge plans to allow beer and wine sales at athletic events beginning January 6, 2018. This includes all games for MBB, WBB, Baseball, Softball, both Volleyballs and both Soccers. (link)
