Property Maintenance Reminder

The City of Hartford’s Department of Public Works would like to remind property owners, both businesses and residential, of their responsibilities in response to a snow or ice event as mandated by city ordinances Hartford Municipal Codes Sec. 31-143–151.
Property Owner’s Responsibilities:
All property owners are required to do the following within six (6) hours after the conclusion of the storm:

Clear all sidewalks of snow and/or ice including curb cuts if located on a corner lot. THROWING OF SNOW OR ICE ONTO CITY STREETS IS PROHIBITED.
Sand/salt sidewalks, as necessary, to provide a safe and convenient path for pedestrians.
Clear fire hydrant(s) of any snow and/or ice.
Remove snow from roofs near street line that may slide and endanger public transit.

Violation of the above Municipal Codes can result in a $99 per day fine until corrected.

Public Works - NEW APPOINTMENT ONLY Bulky Waste Curbside Collection Program

Beginning January 1, 2018, qualified residential properties will have to schedule the collection of approved bulky items. Each residential property, six (6) units or fewer is allotted two (2) free collections per year per unit, of five (5) or fewer approved bulky items each collection. Residents with additional items for disposal can schedule additional collections at a cost of $75 per collection, or obtain a $10 permit (max 4 visits) and transport items to the transfer station directly.

This program is NOT available to commercial properties, apartment complexes or multifamily properties with more than 6 units.
To Participate residents can Call Hartford 311 at (860) 757-9311, Monday – Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm to schedule a collection.

Hartford Stage and Hartford Public Library Unveil New Program

Check out a theater show … at your local library.

Hartford Stage and the Hartford Public Library have joined together for what they describe as a “multi-tiered community partnership” which will increase Hartford residents’ access to live theater. The main way that will happen is through free tickets to Hartford Stage shows, distributed through the library.

The institutions held a joint press conference at Hartford Stage Friday to announce the project.

The partnership has three main components:

Hartford Public Library will start a “Library Pass Program” this week where library patrons can “check out” tickets to Hartford Stage shows the same way they might get a museum pass. The main library and all its branches will each have two tickets available for every performance of every Hartford Stage show. Patrons can get the tickets by using their library cards. The tickets can be reserved in advance.
The library will be overseeing a “Neighborhood Ambassador Program.” Representatives of each neighborhood in which the city has a library will get to see each Hartford Stage show, then be able to see the show again and bring several other people with them.
The library will select books pertaining to each Hartford Stage show. The books will be on display in the lobby of theater, where they can be checked out using a library card.

Winter Boot Party Outfits The Homeless During First Snowstorm

Patrick and Kimberly Wegner had been homeless for just two weeks when they walked into Holy Trinity Church last year for the first Winter Boot Party.

Having spent four of those days on the street, they knew how thin, old shoes fare against wet grass, puddles and freezing temperatures. They knew what a difference good shoes could make.

A year later, they know what difference they can make.

The Wegners, no longer homeless after eight months of living in separate shelters, volunteered to help at Hartford City Hall Saturday for the latest Winter Boot Party, an initiative by the nonprofit Footwear with Care that provides shoes and medical exams to the city’s homeless.

Hartford Group Highlights Community Activist's Decades of Service

In the ’80s and ’90s, if you wanted something done in the Behind the Rocks neighborhood, you’d call Rosa Morales.

“Miss Rosa” made a name for herself holding politicians accountable, advocating for green spaces and the people who utilized them — without her, Alexander Goldfarb Memorial Park, near her home on Grafton Street, would still be a trash-filled ravine. It took the 82-year-old half a decade of calls and testimony to city officials to see that project through.

“People need to care because it’s where they live,” Morales said recently. “I used to call whenever I saw a mess, even if it was nowhere near my home. It’s still my city.”

On Thursday, Morales was recognized by the Maple Avenue Revitalization Group for her decades of service.
