The diet that helps fight climate change

In the latest video of the Climate Lab series, Ben Houlton talks about what's on your dinner plate. "If you take a steak and ask the question 'What's been put into making that appear on my plate?', you can trace it back all the way to the fertilizer that's used to grow the food and then the grains which are used to feed the animals." Nearly every step that goes into food production has some impact on global warming, and it adds up: agriculture and land use are responsible for nearly a quarter of all global greenhouse gas emissions. 


UC Santa Barbara's commitment to earth-friendly facilities and education earns new recognition  

When it comes to sustainability UCSB's efforts are coming up green, and getting important attention - again. International rankings, LEED Platinum certifications, and recognition for leadership in various aspects of sustainability are among the latest accolades the university has earned. 
 

Article profiles UCSF staff who earned Sustainability Award from Chancellor Hawgood 

Two UCSF staff members' efforts to increase the sustainability of their departments were recognized with a Sustainability Award. Liana Crosby and Sylvia DeCourcey have consistently built awareness of UCSF sustainability efforts, shared sustainability information, and been proactive in greening their respective offices.  
 

UC Berkeley's Green Labs program pumps up the water savings 

Six labs, 60 fish pumps, $1,500, and some ingenuity and 1.5 million gallons of water are now being saved annually thanks to UC Berkeley's Green Labs program. 
 

Steinberg proposes electric shuttle service from Sacramento to UC Davis

An electric shuttle service that operates regularly between Sacramento and UC Davis could be a future stop on the city's quest to use more zero-emission technologies, if Mayor Darrell Steinberg's wish list is granted.

RE-Volv Solar Ambassador Program 

RE-Volv's Solar Ambassador Program is a unique fellowship opportunity for college students to develop key project management, outreach, and communications skills while tangibly taking action on climate change through solar energy.  Applications will be reviewed on a first come first serve basis. 

 

AASHE Conference call for proposals 

The 2018 AASHE Conference & Expo will examine the critical role of higher education in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). AASHE 2018 is looking for proposals from a diverse group of attendees to examine how higher education institutions can support, advance, and align themselves with SDGs. 


Nico Linesch Boundary Crossing Scholar's Award accepting applications

The California Student Sustainability Coalition and the Linesch family are pleased to announce the award in honor of Nico Linesch, who passed away January 2017. The Nico Linesch Boundary Crossing Scholar Award will provide $4,000 stipends for students who design interdisciplinary internships in agencies whose budgets limit their capacity to offer compensation. Applications are due January 2, 2018.
