Thank you to our Tree Keepers

RECOGNIZING OUR TREE KEEPER: TED WALLER

This tree planting season, we trained some dedicated volunteers to become Tree Keepers! Tree Keepers are essential to helping our efforts to increase the tree canopy across Durham. Our Tree Keepers have attended both a tree pruning and a tree planting workshop to understand how to properly plant and care for trees and maximize their lifespan! One of our Tree Keepers, Ted Waller, has already fulfilled his service requirements, by providing leadership at volunteer tree planting and tree care activities.

We asked him why he decided to become a Tree Keeper: "I am a retired librarian who worked for 29 years at Meredith College in Raleigh. One of my goals since retiring 2 years ago has been to get out in nature as much as possible. Last year I hiked 130 miles of the Mountains To The Sea Trail. This fall I walked 59 miles on the beaches of the Outer Banks from Ocracoke to Rodanthe. I am a regular on the crew that maintains and builds trails along the Eno River.

Becoming a Tree Keeper is ideal for me because it offers many things I like: Learning something new, being outdoors, giving back, and being with like-minded people who want to improve our community. I have been impressed by the commitment and energy of everybody working with Keep Durham Beautiful. The enthusiasm is contagious."

Thank you, Ted, for taking the time to invest in the future and preserve Durham's tree canopy!

UPCOMING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Tree Giveaway in East Durham

Thanks to a  generous grant from the Duke Energy Foundation for tree canopy renewal in East Durham, we will be able to give away 450 flowering, pollinator-friendly Crape Myrtle trees for Durham residents to enjoy. Experience first-hand the many benefits of trees! Reserve a tree from our Tree Giveaway and pick up on Thursday December 14 from 2-5 pm at the Eastway Elementary School parking area. We want to thank Duke Energy Foundation for making this giveaway possible and for sponsoring tree planting that helps us to meet our goal of planting 1,000 trees this winter! As a volunteer-based nonprofit, we rely on donors and volunteers to help us make such incredible things happen!

Give a gift to Keep Durham Beautiful

The end of the year is approaching and we would love your help to make 2018 even more impactful than this past year! As a nonprofit we depend on donations and volunteers to achieve our mission. We accomplished so much this past year which includes working with over 4000 volunteers, removing over 62,000 pounds of trash, and planting over 600 trees! As you consider how you are going to make a difference this next year, consider giving a holiday gift to Keep Durham Beautiful. Every dollar expands our ability to provide volunteers the opportunities and tools to make a difference in our community.
