What is the title of your session?  Sharing Your Adventure - Creating Your Own Hiking Blog

What is your favorite part about being outdoors?

Goodness, that is a hard one to answer.  There is not one physical thing, like the trees, or the flowers, or the sky, that I could pinpoint as being the reason I love the outdoors.  It is deeper, something I feel way down when I step outside.  The rush of stepping into the forest, the unknown beyond the next bend in the trail.  Even now, just thinking about it, my heart is beating a bit faster, my knees have a springy, funny feeling, and I am slightly tingly!  I guess my favorite part about being outdoors is that every step takes me farther away and yet brings me closer to home.

Do you have a favorite hike or adventure?  I do not have a favorite, each is special in their own way.

What is your never-leave-home-without piece of gear?
I always have a rain poncho and a peanut butter sandwich. Always.

What encouragement would you give to a woman that is new to the outdoors or nervous about getting out there?

It's important that a woman give herself time to get used to the outdoors...the sounds, the smells, and all the normal stuff that happens.  Hiking with Trail Dames is a great way to get acclimated.  Before I started hiking, I had no idea what to bring in a back pack, heck, I didn't even know I needed a backpack.  Trail Dames gives women a chance to test themselves and grow as a hiker within a supportive environment.  Many women I know that started hiking with Trail Dames have gone on to be confident solo hikers!

When I first started hiking I was slightly terrified to go out alone on the trail. I started slow by taking solo hikes in local parks.  It helped me to see folks on the trail that were happy and encouraging!  In addition, having my dog along helped me conquer my fears.  While I would not advise a woman get a dog unless she is already a dog lover, I found my dog was my favorite hiking companion!

Any other thoughts?
Don't wait! You only have one life.  When this day is gone, you will never get it back.  Get out there and enjoy!
