Graduate Student works with National Park Service to Create Informative Brief on the Benefits of National Capital Region Trees
Dedicated to preserving parks for future generations, the National Park Service (NPS) collects long-term data on a variety of resources including trees. NPS Scientists evaluate the data to monitor forest structure trends. The i-Tree suite of tools presented an opportunity to quantify tree benefits based on this existing data.

Katherine Ferguson, recent MLA graduate, collaborated with the Urban Ecology Research Learning Alliance (UERLA - the regional Research Learning Center of the National Capital area of the National Park Service) to evaluate National Park Service data using i-Tree tools. Her research brief, Ecobenefits of National Capital Region Park Trees, is the first in a series to describe tree benefits across the region. This brief represents a great communication tool facilitated with existing data and the latest science in i-Tree Eco.

Hydro v6 beta Now Available, with Many New Upgrades and More to Come!
                   Stormwater green infrastructure. Source EPA.
The latest i-Tree update includes the redesigned Hydro v6 (beta) application, offering new reports and options. Highlights include:
  • New reports - 'Advanced Outputs' class of reports focus on specific parts of the water cycle.
  • User interface - now more user friendly for easier and more flexible project setup.
  • Greater flexibility in scenario comparisons - up to 4 land cover scenarios can now be stored within one project, and users now have the option to run each land cover scenario with a unique hydrological parameter set.
  • Customizable pollutants -  user-defined pollutants allow for more localized water quality modeling.
  • Enhanced and faster autocalibration.
  • Legacy importer tool - automatically updates Hydro v5 projects to work in v6.
Hydro v6 continues to be improved with green infrastructure features planned for a future update. We welcome additional user feedback during the beta period to help guide model development, and we appreciate all the suggestions contributed so far! To take advantage of these changes, please make sure to update your software.

i-Tree Integrated in EPA's EnviroAtlas
EnviroAtlas is a free, online mapping and decision tool developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and partners utilizing numerous i-Tree-based data layers. It provides interactive resources for exploring the benefits people receive from nature, or "ecosystem goods and services" (EGS). EGS are critically important to human health and well-being, but they are often overlooked. EnvironAtlas users can access, view, and analyze diverse information to better understand the potential impacts of decisions on EGS in order to capture their benefits and avoid unintended consequences for human welfare.

Urban Natural Resources Institute Webinars:

The Ins & Outs of Inventories: What to know when using i-Tree to conduct your tree survey
Thursday, December 14, 2017 @1:00pm EST
Many communities with limited resources turn to i-Tree for traditional street and park tree inventories. i-Tree applications, including i-Tree Eco and the original i-Tree Streets, offer ready-made protocols for collecting common tree inventory data, and are tools designed primarily for structural and tree benefit analyses with specifications and limitations to consider. This webinar will explore the possibilities and options for using i-Tree applications for small scale tree inventory projects, including lessons learned from other small communities.

i-Tree Roundtable: What's ahead and what topics have been and will be most beneficial for attendees for the coming year.
Thursday January 18th @ 1:00pm EST
Details will be posted on the Urban Natural Resources Institute website after December 14th.

The free series is offered by the Urban Natural Resources Institute and is led by members of the i-Tree Team. The sessions typically feature demonstrations, presentations and discussion designed to help participants become familiar with the i-Tree tools and provide a foundation for further learning.

Pre-registration is required to participate in these webinars.

Archived webinars and presentations can be accessed from the i-Tree Presentations page and future events can be viewed on the Workshops & Training page.
