How quickly this year has flown by! I am extremely privileged to have been re-elected to serve as the WLANSW’s President for another year at our AGM on 21 November 2017.
I congratulate each member of the newly elected Executive Committee for 2017-2018 and warmly welcome the new members to the Executive Committee: Mahrukah Batliwalla, Elizabeth Wang and Alex Grayson. We partnered with the First 100 Years Team founded by Rachel Scanlon and the Law Society of New South Wales to launch the ‘First 100 years’ celebrations on 15 November. The festivities will take place over the next 12 months to celebrate the centenary of the Women's Legal Status Act of 1918 and all the trailblazing women in NSW law. A fabulous website has been established at https://first100years.com.au and I encourage you all to visit it regularly to stay up to date with all the events and initiatives associated with the First 100 Years celebrations.
We’ll be kicking off 2018 with our signature biennial event ‘Celebrating Women in the Judiciary’ with guest speaker, The Honourable Justice Virginia Bell AC of the High Court of Australia. Please ‘save the date’, 6pm Thursday 22nd February 2018 at the Union University & Schools Club Sydney.

Our office will be closed from 22 December 2017 and will reopen 8 January 2017. Women’s Mentoring Program (Advancement of Women Initiative)
Being a mentee in the program offers a wonderful opportunity for women with 5 or more years of experience as a practising lawyer to build connections with senior practitioners who can offer guidance and support toward managing and advancing their career. The mentoring relationship provides the platform to discuss issues such as managing family and work commitments, career paths to senior roles or growing your own business with an experienced practitioner in a supportive and confidential forum. Hunter to trial new app to help protect domestic violence victims
 Sher Campbell (pictured centre), part of our Women Lawyers Executive, is working with Dr Colin James and Dr Lynne McCormack (Law and Psychology researchers at the University of Newcastle and the ANU College of Law) to try and reduce breaching of Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders (ADVOs) in NSW. They won a pitch tournament in a competition as part of the NSW Government Innovation Launch Program securing a grant of $150,000 from NSW Department of Finance, Services and Innovation to develop a mobile phone application for defendants of ADVOs.
The team are participating in an incubation program run with access to mentors and subject matter experts, education and support, potential partners and investors. Initially, the project will develop a mobile phone application called ‘Bernie’ that will be freely available through lawyers employed by the Hunter Community Legal Centre and the Central Coast Legal Centre advising respondents in ADVO applications at Newcastle Local Court. After that, and if the research proves the App's effectiveness, the team is going to expand its application to other services. ‘Bernie’ reinforces practical and legal information given by the lawyers, information that is often forgotten due to heightened anxiety in court. ‘Bernie’ can be personalised to include appointment reminders and court dates. It also provides useful support contacts, an emergency button for stressful situations, and psycho-social resources. If we are going to address the horrific statistics associated with DV we need to reduce domestic violence re-offending.
The team has contracted and is working alongside Mudbath Pty Ltd, a Newcastle-based app developer to develop the app and the program is supported by the Behavioural Insights Unit from the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet, Department of Finance Services and Innovation and Justice NSW. Inspired by real events, Sweet Country is a period western set in 1929 in the outback of the Northern Territory, Australia. When Aboriginal stockman Sam (Hamilton Morris) kills white station owner Harry March (Ewen Leslie) in self-defence, Sam and his wife Lizzie (Natassia Gorey-Furber) go on the run. They are pursued across the outback, through glorious but harsh desert country.
Sergeant Fletcher (Bryan Brown) leads the posse with the help of Aboriginal tracker Archie (Gibson John) and local landowners Fred Smith (Sam Neill) and Mick Kennedy (Thomas M. Wright). Fletcher is desperate to capture Sam and put him on trial for murder – but Sam is an expert bushman and he has little difficulty outlasting them. Eventually, for the health of his pregnant wife, Sam decides to give himself up. He is put on trial in the courtroom of Judge Taylor (Matt Day). But will justice be served?
