The Team at Advocacy for Inclusion would like to thank all our members for their support this year. It has been a year of significant change within our organisation, yet we still achieved so much by advocating for the voice and rights of people with disabilities in the Canberra community.

2017 Highlights 
  • Voting Kit recognised as best practice by Inclusion Melbourne 
  • Connecting with Self-Advocacy groups in Port Macquarie and from SARU in Victoria 
  • Receiving ILC funding to roll out a self-advocacy court orientation
  • Commencing work on NDIS Appeals 
  • Contributing to Lifelines Domestic Violence Alert Trainers National forum in Melbourne
  • Contributed to the OPCAT ratification in Australia
  • Self-advocates travelling to Melbourne for the SARU conference 
  • Our Advocate Jamelle being nominated for a Chief Ministers Inclusion Award 
Our office will close on Friday 22nd December to 2 January. 

We look forward to working with you in the New Year. 2018 will bring exciting changes to our organisation as we introduce our new CEO and unveil our strategic plan for 2018-2021!

On Monday 13 November, Advocacy for Inclusion held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in which it elected new members of the Board for 2018.

The night was a great opportunity for members to come together and hear about all the great things that the board and staff had achieved during the year.

Our Board for 2018 includes:

  • Treasurer: Paul Salinas
  • Secretary: Jane Flanagan
  • Committee member: John Koulouris

Santa practices Self-Advocacy
  • Learnt the skills of speaking for himself
  • Practices speaking for himself
  • Understands his rights
  • Seeks help, when needed, to find information
  • Seek help, when needed, to make decisions
  • Uses his Self-Advocacy skills to resolve issues with people or events
 Santa accepts consequences for decisions
  • Does not blame the elves if something goes wrong
Santa listens to people to understand their needs and wants
  • Listens and looks at children when talking with them
Santa takes action when needed
  • Takes a new route when confronted by unexpected buildings
Santa makes decisions by remembering outcomes from similar experiences
  • Plans his delivery route based on previous experiences
Santa sets and works towards goals
  • Christmas is only one day a year, but the planning takes 364
Santa uses his problem-solving skills
  • He solved the problem of where to put Rudolph with his shiny nose
Santa self-regulates his behaviour
  • He eats only one biscuit at each house he visits
Santa is persistent
  • Breaks down a goal into smaller tasks
Santa is a good communicator
  • Listens and paraphrases to make sure he understands what was said
Santa is self-confident
  • He dresses like nobody else

Advocacy for Inclusion is reaching out to like-minded organisations in the ACT about our 2018 Self-advocacy program.

Our established programs are flourishing and we are now looking to nurture new programs that enable people with disabilities to speak up and speak out on issues that they identify as important to them.
