TCU: News hit last night that Chancellor Boschini will turn to Deputy AD for External Affairs Donati to lead the Horned Frogs with former AD Del Conte off to Texas. Presser set for today at 2p CST (Del Conte's is at 11a in Austin). Donati has been a mainstay in Ft. Worth since 2011, steadily climbing the ladder thanks to stellar fundraising results. (link); Dallas/Ft. Worth sports TV personality Scruggs reports the exit of Del Conte means buyouts for FB HC Patterson & Baseball HC Schlossnagle are now "null and void." (link); Donati comments on a piece for the university's student newspaper on how the potential federal tax changes could impact another big renovation for Amon G. Carter Stadium. "We do think there may be an effect on capital giving which is what we are talking about with the stadium renovation. […] Donors want to support things they believe in. We, TCU, the football program, coach [Gary] Patterson have made TCU football an easy thing to give towards. People like success. They want to be a part of things that are successful, so it’s our job just to help facilitate that. […] We still think that demand will still be there regardless of the tax implications, but we are kind of in a wait and see approach until we hear more." (link)
Houston Chronicle journalist Duarte points to Cal Senior Assoc. AD/COO Pezman as the front-runner to take over the AD role at Houston with former boss Yurachek off to Arkansas. Pezman is a former Cougars FB letter winner & also previously worked on the FB staff of former HC Levine. No word from Duarte on a hiring timeline for UH. (link)
The Louisville story continues, this time on ESPN's E:60, which aired in full yesterday morning, plus an ESPN Magazine spread. Coincidentally, a pack of Adidas leaders were in the Derby City meeting with Cards brass when the MBB-FBI news broke. ESPN's Fainaru & Fainaru-Wada: "Nothing has been the same in Louisville since. [...] Perhaps more than any other place in America, Louisville came to embody the contradictions of college athletics -- a multibillion-dollar industry built on amateur athletes. The Adidas partnership was supposed to be a crowning achievement that validated the university as a national power." Assoc. AD for Marketing Waldron, who previously worked in the Clinton administration, says the recent news is worse that the Lewinsky saga in D.C. Former AD Jurich gets plenty of additional coverage, notes the condition of the university when he arrived & points to dynamic fundraising as a key ingredient for the brand build. Naturally, there's plenty of pushback from other institution & community leaders on how things went down on the Belknap Campus. Long read, honestly not sure how much is really new. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
"Fit" is such an important element of making a professional move, and Wesleyan University lecturer and journalist Knight advises "How to Tell If a Company's Culture Is Right for You" in this Harvard Business Review piece. To "decode the organization and find out where the bodies are buried" you must: 1. Interview your prospective colleagues (talk to as many as you can); 2. Do a test run (see if they will let you sit in on a brainstorming session); 3. Get to know your boss (have a long conversation about his/her vision for the organization); 4. Interview outside sources (go "behind-the-scenes"); 5. Think beyond the initial offer (what does your career path look like there?); 6. Be introspective (will you thrive and be challenged there?). Through all of that, remember to be positive but skeptical, rely on your network and focus especially on the relationship development with your potential future boss. (link)

Engaging conversation between Illinois AD Whitman & Alabama peer Bryne on how the two leaders strive to keep their departments looking ahead, while not missing a beat amid a constantly shifting landscape around college athletics. Of note from Whitman, "The biggest challenge in our world is time. There are so many things that require your daily attention that you really have to be disciplined in your time management and thought process to focus on the strategic five or ten year items. [...] The key to successful execution of a strategic plan is to empower people to put their own stamp on it….giving them a voice in the process." Byrne echoes, "One of the key components of successful organizations is for every part of your organization to feel like their role is critical for your success." Lots more. (link)
College Football Playoff Executive Director Hancock Q&As with The Advocate's Lewis, points to the CFP's selection process, which he calls "much more transparent and understandable than the BCS was," as the biggest improvement of the post-season structure. Hancock also believes we'll continue to see more high-profile non-conference games scheduled as ADs & HCs realize "you've got to go play somebody." Says it would be premature to even entertain talks about the next TV deal & as you might imagine, indicates there's no momentum for expanding the format. A bit more. (link)
The Chronicle of Higher Education releases its updated executive compensation database with 2015 data for private school leaders. Fifty-eight CEOs earned $1M or more with deferred compensation & bonuses becoming more prevalent. "Private colleges tend to pay their presidents more than public ones do. The Chronicle’s most recent compilation for public universities showed eight earning compensation packages exceeding $1 million, led by Michael Crow of Arizona State University, at $1.6 million." (link); Here's the full, sortable database with Wake Forest's Hatch on top at $4.004M, three others above $3M (Emory's Wagner = $3.51M, USC's Nikias = $3.182M & Penn's Gutmann = $3.086M). Kansas spent $395K to settle a pair of Title IX lawsuits filed by two former rowing student-athletes against the school. The Tackett family received $245K, while another $150K went to the McClure family. Kansas City-based law firm Brown and Curry, which represented both women, got more than a third of each settlement. KU attempted to get both cases dismissed since they were originally filed in the spring of 2016 and both were dismissed last month after agreements were reached. A statement from the school, in part: "The university denies any and all such claims of discrimination and retaliation, and the university is confident that it fulfilled its obligations. It has effective policies and procedures in place to prevent and respond to sexual harassment and retaliation."  (link)
Oregon MBB HC Altman responded to reports he may have known more about the sexual assault allegations connected to former student-athlete Bigby-Williams before he landed in Eugene than he originally disclosed. Altman: "My calls with Lisa Peterson, she called me to get Kavell's number and to get information to try and contact him. So those were the first few calls for me to give her the information for Kavell. She didn't give me any details. Nothing like that. She just wanted to get a hold of Kavell. I assumed it was something because she's the Title IX person in our department. […] I called Wyoming to seek basic information. My only concern there was I wanted to see if there were criminal charges against one of my players. I didn't ask any questions. I didn't want to know any information. I just wanted to know if there was something criminal involved." (link)
The Baltimore Sun's Mirabella goes in on executive leadership changes at Under Armour as the brand looks to reverse a downward trend & get back in the good graces of consumers & Wall Street. Motley Fool analyst Moser on all the moves, "If for some reason even one of those individuals leaves, if they leave because they aren’t able to work with the current team, that’s going to be a sign to us that Kevin Plank is too difficult to work with and less interested in assembling a team of executives and more interested in assembling a team of ‘yes’ men and women. […] We want to see that Plank is able to assemble a team of diverse opinions that can challenge his thinking and encourage him to make the best decisions." Kansas Business School professor Guthrie a bit worried as research shows major leadership overhauls commonly lead to more subpar results, "A lot of firms do well when they groom people over time." (link)

Today in Chile, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Turkey and Uraguay, Instagram will launch "Direct," a standalone app for private messages that, when downloaded, removes the inbox feature from your regular Instagram app. Direct, still in testing stages, follows the same mindset of Facebook, which in 2014 dedicated its "Messenger" app to just direct messaging. The Verge's Newton says Direct has "one of the niftiest app transitions I've ever seen." No estimated timeline on a possible global introduction. (link)

Sports Illustrated's Deitsch turns to SBD expert Karp on TV ratings for college FB now that the regular season & champ games are complete. The picture isn't terribly pretty for most as CBS' package was down 10% year-over-year, ABC decreased by 18%, NBC down 3% & ESPN down 6%. Winners: Fox saw a 23% jump & FS1 did a 4% increase. SEC on CBS did its lowest numbers "in well over a decade." Context from Karp, "I don’t think that meant less interest in college football. If anything, I’d say the interest was higher this season compared to some prior years. If you look at total minutes viewed for college football, it had to be some sort of record this year. […] this is a zero-sum game, particularly as it relates to the Power Five conferences. Fox Sports’ gain was ABC/ESPN’s loss, as the new Big Ten contracts meant Bristol had fewer options with regard to top teams. […] As good as a team like UCF was this season, matchups from the AAC just aren’t moving the needle." (link)
South Alabama AD Erdmann just hired a new FB HC & points to an on-campus stadium as a major need for the Jags, "The name of the story is still the same. It's we've got to generate money to do it. People may not know it, but we are working at that daily. I and everybody wants it immediately." In the meantime, Erdmann still thinks the program can be championship-level, just looks at on-campus digs as "the cherry on top of the sundae," wants the reconstructed practice venue to be done by next summer. (link)
The addition of beer & alcohol sales inside college sports venues can turn a modest profit, but thought-leader Dosh nails the intrinsic value-add play, "Most schools aren’t actually making very much. I don’t think the primary reason they’re adding the option is to generate revenue, it’s to improve the game day experience and bolster attendance. […] The reason they don’t make much is because they split the revenue with the concessionaire and there is an added security cost associated with adding alcohol. Definitely not a revenue play as much as a fan experience one." Minnesota noted as an example with the Golden Gophers losing money in its first year of sales. (link)
The Post and Courier's Cloninger profiles South Carolina Director of Football Nutrition Coggin. Hired in May from Alabama, Coggin handles every meal, snack and beverage for every student-athlete in the program. Coggin: "I tell everyone I have 110 kids. They’re all their own person. I’m with the players four times a day, breakfast, practice, lunch. ... The meals are my game. I’m setting them up for whatever’s ahead for us." Coggin grocery shops with players and is available by phone 24/7, so even when the late night hunger hits, she can advise them on what is best to eat. More. (link)
More from Around Higher Ed: Bowling Green Prez Mazey will step down from her leadership role at the end of the month, but aid the university through June of 2019. (link); Tulane announced a massive $1.3B fundraising campaign, "Only the Audacious," with 60% already generated. Prez Fitts: "We’ve thrived, but always with fewer resources. But here’s the thing: I don’t know about you, but I’ve had enough of running a marathon from 15 yards behind." (link); UCSB will delay finals for this semester into January due to the impact of the Southern California wildfires. At UCLA, individual departments have the authority to determine how to make up missed classes. (link)
Also Noticed: The Army West Point-Navy FB game on CBS did a 5.9 overnight national rating, up 5% from last season. (link); ESPN hires Walmart Senior Director of Media Stallings as its new VP for Fan Engagement, will report up through SVP of Marketing & Consumer Engagement Young. (link); The Dallas Mavericks get back in bed with BedGear in a deal that includes personalized sleep systems for all Mavs players. Seriously, could this be an iteration of the student-athlete experience? (link); MLB's Tampa Bay Rays sue former concessionaire partner Centerplate on breach of contract terms. (link)
