And After the Fire by Lauren Belfer

“When a favorite uncle dies, Susanna Kessler, the protagonist of this provocative novel, inherits the manuscript of a previously unknown Bach cantata. The uncle stole it while working for American intelligence in Germany at the end of the Second World War, and kept it secret because it contains virulently anti-Semitic material, taken from Luther’s infamous 1543 treatise, “On the Jews and Their Lies.” The novel narrates both the cantata’s early history—once the property of Bach’s eldest son, it later passed to the musically gifted daughter of a prosperous Jewish banking family—and the momentous repercussions of its rediscovery. In Belfer’s hands, fictitious characters blend uncannily with historical ones.”  (New Yorker Magazine, May 30, 2016)
