EMERGENCY LEGISLATION FOR HISTORIC HOUSES
|

|
On Tuesday, December 5th, the DC Council voted unanimously to pass legislation introduced by Chairman Mendelson on behalf of Mayor Bowser transferring four long-vacant, city-owned houses in Historic Anacostia to The L'Enfant Trust for rehabilitation into workforce housing. The vote seems to have finally ended a political impasse that tied up the disposition of these buildings even as their condition fell deeper and deeper into dereliction with each passing day.
The latest articles detailing the story up until the vote can be found here.

The Trust identified these four houses as among the most deteriorated buildings in Historic Anacostia in 2014 and worked for years trying to come to an agreement with the city government before they became tangled in the disposition and legislative processes. The time that has been required to reach a resolution only makes swift action to reverse years of disinvestment in these properties more urgently needed.
The Trust is lining everything up so that stabilization of the buildings can begin immediately upon transfer of the properties.
