Social Activities During the Holidays

The holidays typically bring parties, office outings, and other social activities that managers might not normally engage in with their subordinates.  This week, we offer a few tips for managers to ensure these experiences stay positive and don’t turn awkward.

First and foremost, be inclusive.  Invite everyone within the work group.  Picking and choosing which employees are invited is a solid path to claims of discrimination or favoritism.

At the event, mingle constantly, and be aware of perceptions.  While it’s natural to gravitate to those who share similar interests or who you feel you know better, that will result in the same concerns about favoritism…or worse.  Even if no insider conversations or overly chummy interactions are occurring, some employees may think differently if you linger with one person or group too long.  Don’t give employees reason to think that there is more to social interactions than meets the eye.

Above all else, be mindful of the impact any social behavior can have on your working relationships and reputation as a manager.  Even in social situations, you are a representative of the company.  Drinking too much, oversharing personal information, and pushing other professional boundaries will erode the trust employees have in you and call into question your credibility and ability to effectively lead.

A few other Do’s and Don’ts:

DO show up.

DO dress appropriately.

DON’T complain or talk gossip, politics, religion, or overly personal issues.

DO everything in moderation…drink, eat, talk, etc.

DON’T stay buried in your phone.

DON’T give your manager a gift, unless it’s a group gift.

DO say “thank you” to the organizers.

DON’T “duck out.”
