Lutz Preparatory School K-8 NEWSFLASH, V6 Issue 23, December 15, 2017
Dear Lutz Preparatory Families,

As we wrap up the first semester of school, we wish to share a few reminders to help continue fostering a successful and supportive partnership between our families and the school.

Campus Safety:
The safety of our students, staff, and visitors is a priority of Lutz Prep at all times. In efforts to continue keeping our campus a safe environment, any and all visitors must report to the front desk and receive the appropriate visitor’s badge before entering the building or classes.  This pertains to all parents, volunteers, or visitors that have scheduled times or meetings with teachers and/or administration.

Morning Arrival:
The campus officially opens when safety patrol reports to their posts on the sidewalk signaling the beginning of the car loop at 7:30 AM.  Students must remain in cars under parent supervision until that time unless prior arrangements have been made (i.e. meeting with teacher, tutoring, safety patrol, etc.).  Students with tutoring beginning at 7:30 AM may not enter the lobby prior to 7:25 AM.

To best support the preparation of the school day and morning tutoring times, parents shall refrain from reporting to a classroom unless prior arrangements have been established. Parents are encouraged to email your child’s teacher to set up a conference that’s mutually convenient for both parties if you wish to discuss specific concerns. As we progress further into the school year, we also want to utilize mornings for opportunities to promote independence and pride in our students. Please exchange hugs and good wishes for the day from carline or the front lobby.

Since school safety is always a priority, we additionally have the back gate as a fobbed entrance accessible to staff only.  All students and visitors will need to enter through the main office in the morning.  Middle school students cannot be dropped off in the back to gain access to the middle school modular.  Please drop them off in the front of the school so that they can access the campus through the front office.

Student Confidentiality:
In addition to safety, all students are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Student information pertaining to their learning, records, medicine, allergies, special needs, etc. are all protected under FERPA and are kept confidential.  In order to support student confidentiality, parents are not eligible to conduct class observations. Thank you for your understanding.

Congratulations to several of our LP students who participated in academic and artistic events at the district level over the last few weeks.  We are always so proud to see them excel outside of the day-to-day learning environment here at LP.  See all the details below regarding the Math League Competition and PTA Reflections Program that our students participated in at a district level.

In closing, we are thrilled to be rolling out the Leader In Me program at our school, we have already seen our wonderful students embracing the program in all grades.  For those families who were not able to attend our town hall announcing the program, please see the Parent's Guide and one page overview of the program at the end of this publication for all the details.  There are several things you can do at home as a family to reinforce the principles your child learns at school.

If you have any questions, please contact the school at administration@lutzprep.org.  Thank you for your continued support and we wish you a wonderful holiday season!

Sincerely,

Bonnie Guertin
Director
Lutz Preparatory School

2017 PTA Reflections Awards – Hillsborough County
Students from 43 Hillsborough County schools participated in the 2017-2018 National PTA Reflections art program themed: Within Reach. Students of all abilities created original works of art in the medium of their choice (dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts) reflecting on this specific theme which changes annually. The top three entries in each arts category received an Award of Excellence which honors imagination, creativity, and interpretation of the theme. Students were recognized for their artistic ingenuity and efforts to bring the theme to life in a way that is personal and meaningful. Award of Excellence recipients will have their work advance to the State level competition in April 2018 in Orlando. Congratulations and best wishes to all Hillsborough County student artists!

This year four Lutz Prep students received the Award of Excellence

  • Olivia W. Middle School: Visual Art
  • Jack J. Middle School: Film Production

    • Congratulations to Tyler Tyson for winning 3rd place for individual scores, competing against over 40 other students!
  • Representing 7th grade was Bethany B., Lauren S., Neha S., and Jessica C.
    • Congratulations to the team for winning second place overall against 10 other schools!
  • Representing 8th grade was Jayna J., Daisia J., Rebecca A., and Savannah K.

We are so proud of all the participants for their hard work and dedication to their team!  We also want to thank our Math League Faculty Sponsors Mrs. Christensen, Mrs. Vaillancourt, and Mrs. Hertenstein for their commitment to our students.

8th Grade Guest Speaker
Middle School 8th grade students were fortunate enough to be able to listen to and speak with Holocaust survivor, Betty Grebenschikoff.  Ms. Grebenschikoff, a German Jew, lived in Nazi controlled Germany during WWII.  This was Ms. Grebenschikoff’s 2nd visit to LP.  She said it was like “coming home” for her.  She was again complimentary of how amazing our 8th graders are here at LP.  Please look for an article in the upcoming school newspaper about her visit!

Street Hockey Team
The LP team played this weekend at Amalie Arena, losing in the semifinals in a shootout.
