Casey House – A Nod to the Heart

Casey House is the world’s only independent specialized healthcare facility for HIV/AIDS. Since 1988, Casey House has served those living with HIV/AIDS, and now continues to welcome a diverse group of individuals. After nearly 30 years, the outlook for those living with the virus has drastically and positively changed, and the function of Casey House has changed with it. They felt it was time to make a bolder statement about the work they do and the people they serve with an architectural expansion by Hariri Pontarini Architects, adding 58,000 square feet and extending the feeling of home and warmth from the original Victorian mansion. As part of this expansion, Entro developed an exterior identification pylon, and supported the interior designers from IBI Group with the interior wayfinding signage and donor recognition.

Enbridge Centre Takes History to the Street

Enbridge Centre is downtown Edmonton’s first new Financial District tower in 25 years. Designed by Dialog for Pangman Development Corporation and John Day Developments, it offers an engaging street frontage, incorporating the restored facades of the historically significant Kelly Ramsey Buildings that occupied the site and which were nearly destroyed by a fire in 2009. The project’s award winning design includes an upgraded public realm that promotes interaction with the building at ground level which supports the City of Edmonton’s vision of a sustainable, walkable downtown. In being commissioned to plan and design the wayfinding program for the project, we were asked by the owners to consider the history of the original Kelly and Ramsey buildings and the important restoration of their facades which embrace the new tower.

Contributing to IIDEX Woodshop and Talks

The IIDEX Canada Conference is a sourcing, networking and educational event that brings together various interior design and architecture communities to celebrate creativity and best practices. At this year's conference, IIDEX partnered with Entro, along with the City of Toronto, Ontario Wood, AWMAC, Sawmill Sid and PCL Graphics to host the 5th annual IIDEX Woodshop. The purpose of Woodshop is to show how wood that has typically been deemed unworthy can be sustainably repurposed to create commercial and consumer prototypes that are ready for market. Entro designed the exhibit to showcase the special feature collection, with material provided by IIDEX.

Celebrating Cars at the Enbridge Centre Parkade

Parkades are perceived by many to be unsafe, unfriendly, back of house experiences. At Enbridge Centre, the desire of the owners, Pangman Development Corporation and John Day Developments, was to counter this perception by considering the parking environment as carefully as other elements of the tower development, to make it a positive, safe and user-friendly experience. The architectural and engineering design of the parkade answered many issues through better lighting, finishes and clear sight lines to the tower shuttle elevators. Entro responded by creating a thematic approach to wayfinding that would positively enliven the space and provide for better orientation.

Stuart Ash Receives ADCC Lifetime Achievement Award   Entrospective: 'Intuitive Navigation' by Cynthia Damar-Schnobb

In November, the Advertising and Design Club of Canada (ADCC) awarded Gottschalk+Ash co-founder Stuart Ash with an award for lifetime achievement. The award memorializes Les Usherwood, an exemplary hand-lettering artist who co-founded Typesettra Ltd in 1968, and created 211 new fonts over the course of his career including Denby and Caxton. Les was known for his “talent, professionalism and generosity as a colleague and friend”, and was seen as a model to many. Each year his award is presented to someone who has similarly contributed to the quality and community of Canadian creative.

A Senior Associate at Entro, Cynthia Damar-Schnobb has extensive experience in industrial design, environmental graphic design and user-interface design. She brings a comprehensive knowledge of wayfinding strategies and a thorough understanding of manufacturing methods and technologies in designing three-dimensional forms. Responding to cardinal directions being inappropriately used as the main method of providing directional information, she has written 'Intuitive Navigation in Interior Spaces Starts Here' to explain this method and its relationship with wayfinding and orientation within interior spaces.
