Our Take: Is “Coaching Culture” Too Vague?

This Globe and Mail article explores how organizations can create a “coaching culture.” It’s an excellent article, with many insights. However, here at Box of Crayons, we believe that rallying around the cry to create a “coaching culture” may send many HR leaders down the wrong path, as the term is often used as a vague catchall. If culture is “the way we do things around here” — in other words, if “our habits create our culture” — then a focus that’s too much on tactics or exhortations to “coach more” miss the hard issue, which is: How do you get people to change their behaviour? Stay tuned, as we explore this topic more in 2018.
