Cricket

A report from Neil Howard, Coach, re the New Zealand Premier Grade 1st XI Cricket Cup Tournament held in Hastings early December:

Tauranga Boys' College qualified for the First XI Cricket finals for the first time in six years when they defeated Hamilton BHS in the Northern Districts Final in March. This tournament was played from December 4-8 in Palmerston North in sweltering conditions and featured Otago BHS, Palmerston North BHS, Christchurch Boys' High School, Hutt International Boys' School and Rosmini College from Auckland.

First up we played Palmerston North Boys' High School who won the toss and elected to bat. The Tauranga Boys' bowlers controlled much of the innings with Rhys Mischewski and Rhys Donaghy taking wickets to have Palmerston North BHS in trouble at 4/39.  The pressure was maintained when the spinners entered the fray and PNBHS were removed for 125.  Craig Baldry was the best of the bowlers taking 3/19. Our reply was slow and when Marcel Collett fell for 25 the acid was on the lower order. Some late hitting by Brad Howard got the initiative back and Iman Singh held his nerve to secure a two wicket victory with 8 balls to spare.

On the second morning Mikaere Leef won the toss and elected to bat but at 137/8 things were not looking good as the batsmen had once again thrown away starts.  Jacob Logan batted very well on his way to 46 and was supported by Rhys Donaghy as the partnership realised 66 in ten overs. The final score of 206 was a bonus and once again the opening bowlers took early scalps.  Craig Baldry then put the screws on the Otago batsmen taking 1/12 off his ten overs. The introduction of Jacob Logan to the bowling crease saw him take the key Otago wicket and a couple of run outs finished off Otago by 24 runs.

On day three Rosmini College won the toss and elected to bat and their top order made a strong.  At five down with 172 runs on the board the Auckland side were in a strong position but  two quick middle order wickets slowed the opposition momentum. The tail tail stated to wag however with the Rosmini batsmen posting a solid target after reaching 275 for the loss of seven wickets. Brad Howard finished with 2/32 with the other wickets shared between Rhys Mischewski, Dominic Crombie, Craig Baldry, Jacob Logan and Iman Singh. In reply a number of batsmen got starts but at 109/5 the game was long gone. Iman Singh worked hard to graft out a half century and Tas Carsons chipped in with a 21 as the chase petered out at 189.

Day four saw us up against the pace setters Christchurch BHS.  Solid batting from the Cantabrians saw them post 286 with Iman Singh 4/63 and Rhys Mischewski 2/51 doing their best to stem the tide of runs. Despite the score the fielding was strong with Andy Mascall in particular taking a great catch. In reply Marcel Collett was the only batsmen to reach the twenties and only a late partnership between Tas Carsons and Brad Howard managed to get the team past the 100 mark to 114. The boys returning to school next year hopefully learned some lessons from this defeat as Christchurch were a class apart at the tournament.

The last day saw TBC face Hutt International Boys' School from Wellington with a win meaning third place. HIBS won the toss and got away to a flyer posting 49 runs before they lost their first wicket. The bowlers then tightened the screws and started to take regular wickets. With spin bowling to the fore on the dry surface Leef, Baldry, Howard and Singh bowled 34 overs between them, taking 7/77 with Leef being the most successful individually with 3/24. Dominic Crombie then ripped out numbers 10 and 11 as Hutt International were bowled out for just 143. Ben Pomare kept well during the week and recorded his seventh stumping of the tournament in this innings.

Once again we started a chase poorly and when Marcel Collett (21) and Mikaere Leef (29) were out the score stood at 79/5. Two more quick wickets saw TBC in further trouble at 96/7 still requiring 47 runs in the 13 overs remaining. Jacob Logan and Tas Carsons got a partnership going and with the odd good shot and a few wides it was looking good until Carsons fell at 131. Brad Howard settled the nerves with a four first ball and then went on to strike two more boundaries to see the team to victory by two wickets with ten balls to spare.

Junior Water Polo

Our 2017 Junior A Water Polo Team consists of year 9 and year 10 boys who have trained hard for a number of months toward the local Thursday night club competition, the Challenger Cup in Hamilton and finally the Division 1 North Island Championships. The boys, under Coach Brendan Horan, have been in the pool training three times a week over Term 3 and Term 4. At the Challenger Cup, the boys lost only once in the pool round to make it through to a heated final against St Kentigern College. Whilst the boys weren’t able to take out the Cup a lot was learnt and able to be built on. They showed just how much they had learnt by reaching the pinnacle of success at their level and taking out the Division 1 North Island Championships late in November. The team went through the Auckland based tournament unbeaten, taking out Kristin School, Aquinas, St Patrick's and St Peters College.

The Semi-final saw the boys' up against Auckland’s Water Polo heavyweights, Sacred Heart College who they fought hard to beat 6-4.  The Final, held at Diocesan School late Sunday afternoon, was a well-supported match against Rangitoto College. The team played superbly to secure the final win with a score of 8-3.Donghyun Lee was impressive in goal and Jack Preston and Theo Bos were named in the Tournament Team. Theo was crowned Tournament MVP an outstanding achievement by both boys. Next stop, Division 1 Nationals in April 2018.  The team consisted of: Jack Preston, Theo Bos (capt), Sam Jones, Joseph Cook, Jack Hitchfield, Donghyun Lee, Ben Paterson, Ashton Painter, Liam Davoren, Cooper Gibson and Jacob Browne. Coach: Brendan Horan and Manager: Justin Brewer.

Recently we held our "Good Man" Assembly with Year 9 and Year 10 students.  At this assembly we recognised those boys who have shown excellence behaviour and attendance throughout the year.  This is emphasised with a consistent message about respect for self, others and our school, being delivered in a number of forum from the classroom, sports fields, cultural arena and in Administration and Principal assemblies.

Congratulations to the 418 Year 9 and Year 10 boys who received acknowledgement in the form of a certificate.  This is to recognise and acknowledge those who have modelled the expected behaviour.  They have had a great year and it is pleasing to be able to acknowledge them, and heartening to see the increased numbers each year.  These boys do the right thing, exhibit the expected behaviour and level of attendance.  They are getting the message explicit in our Respect Code and responding to expectations.
