The above photo is of Okunoin located in Mount Koya (Koyasan), Wakayama Prefecture, covered by a dusting of recent snow.  Okunoin is the site of the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi (also known as Kukai), the founder of Shingon Buddhism and one of the most revered persons in the religious history of Japan.

Hi <<First Name>>,

Hi everyone, Sally's resident helper elf here. Sally has flown off on her vacation already and left me with the reins of her newsletter, which means it's not quite what you're used to but we didn't want to leave you without any Japan information for the month.

So hopefully this will tie you over until Sally's return!

Have a great Christmas and New Year break and we will see everyone again in 2018!

Regards,
Toni
