Its Advent Season - Not Christmas Yet!

By Pastor Andy - Sunday, December 3

This last week we have seemingly entered fully into the Christmas season.  Last night we had a great dinner and talent show for our Family Christmas Celebration.  Now the church is decorated with trees, wreaths and lights.  As they say, it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here!  But, its really not Christmas yet!

We are in the season of Advent!  You are going to have to wait a little bit longer before you get your full Christmas on here at GTCC!   In worship we will talk more about waiting for the coming of Christ than celebrating the coming of the Christ child—that is what Advent is.

You might know about Advent already, but it is always important to get a little refresher course at the beginning of the season in order to help you experience the joy of Advent.

Advent is the time of preparation for the coming of Christ.  Preparation is the key word on this sentence.  It seems like the rest of the world just jumps right into Christmas as soon as the  middle of December hits.  Or is it right after Halloween?  Either way it is too soon.  We have work to do.  As followers of Christ we need to get ourselves ready for Christ!

Advent is as much about the future as it is about Christmas.  Christmas is about what God did through the incarnation—Advent is about what God did, is doing and will do. We know that at Christmas God set in motion his process of restoring the world to its original creation glory, and that in Jesus’ life, death and resurrection we experience abundant life. That abundant life is just the start of what Christ will do when he returns.  Until that day we will not be able to experience that restoration fully. So, Advent is a reminder that we should be looking toward the future, not just the past, Looking at the full power of the coming of Christ not as a baby in the manger, but as the King of Kings bringing the long promised new heaven and the new earth.

Advent is a corporate spiritual journey that calls for expectant waiting and readiness for the coming of Christ.  Advent is something we do together as a church.  It really isn’t something you do on your own.  Yes, we wait on our own, but as we go through Advent we will be reminded that we aren’t just waiting for salvation, we are waiting with our brothers and sisters for the coming of the Kingdom.  We live the story of Christ now and we wait and watch together for the rest of the story.  We keep each other active while we are waiting, serving each other and those Christ gives us to serve.  We keep each other ready for whatever it is that Christ calls us to do and be.  We can’t do it alone.

Advent is a penitential season, calling us to both personal and corporate repentance.  While we wait in Advent it gives us an opportunity to see that we are not ready for Christ to come back.  We haven’t lived into the first coming of Christ, how could we be ready for the second coming.  While we go about our preparations for Christmas—shopping,, cooking, cleaning—we should also be preparing our lives.  To do that well we need to repent and face Christ.  What in your life needs to change? Our church? Our world?  Of what do we need to repent and correct as we get ready?  Are there things that we would not want Jesus to find us doing or being a part of on that great day?  If so, we should repent and get ready for that day!  That is the purpose of Advent.

During Advent, our sermon series will be about waiting. We are waiting for, with and in Christ!  The series will help us to explore some of those characteristics of our Christian waiting.  Today we are talking about waiting in God’s faithfulness not just our own.  Next week we will talk about how zealousness should be a description of how we are waiting.  On the third Sunday of Advent we will look at what it means to be waiting in thankfulness and how joy should be a part of that waiting and finally on Christmas Eve morning, which is the fourth Sunday of Advent this year, we will talk about waiting in doxological obedience—you will just have to wait and find out exactly what that means.

I pray that we together can have a blessed Advent season and in so doing truly experience the joy of Christmas this year.

Life in Christ and Generosity
Sunday, November 26 - By Pastor Andy

Generosity is a natural outflow from life in Christ, but one that needs to be cultivated. It is too often left untended. For some reason we cut that cultivation short and feel that money is too personal for us to talk about in the church.  Yet, the church cannot do what it is called to do if it does not create generous people who see that as a key component of Life in Christ.

Since generosity is a natural outflow from Life in Christ, our recent sermon series can be used to illumine this.  Here is how our Life in Christ sermon series can be made practical with our view toward money, giving and generosity:

Our Place in the Story:  God has given us so much and called us to an important task. We are called to be his people and to live out Christ’s mission in the world as Christ’s hands and feet. Giving generously to support the work of God’s people is part of the role that we are called to live out. As Jesus sent out his disciples into the mission field he said, “Freely you have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8). That continues to be our place in the story.

Decision:  This is one of those decision points that flows out of our decision to follow Christ.  Are we going to choose to be a generous person or are we going to choose to be controlled by our finances?  Generosity doesn’t just happen, we must choose to live it. Yes, it is a part of the transformation we spoke of in life in Christ, but we must continue to choose to cultivate that sort of generous giving.  What choice are we making?  Are we choosing to give a tithe (ten percent of our income) as it talked about in the Old Testament.  Are we choosing to give 5%? To give when we feel like it?  To give when we see need?  To give when we are asked?  If we do not choose to be generous, we will not be generous.

Obedience: The Bible speaks about money more than any other topic and the teaching is not easy to follow. We are warned to not let money assume a role in our lives that it does not warrant lest it become an idol and a distraction.  The Old Testament is clear on tithing, the New Testament speaks to giving all to God and God’s people.  Obeying the Word of God in regard to money is a central component of discipleship.

Surrender:  There is, of course, a step beyond obedience when it comes to generosity. It is total surrender of our lives, our hopes and our future into God’s kingdom. As the hymn writer said, “All to Jesus, I surrender, All to him I freely give. I will ever love and trust him, in his presence daily live” Generosity becomes a way of life when we truly surrender all we have and live in Christ
doing the work of Christ in the world.

Green Timbers Financials:
I want to end this article with a challenge based on where we are financially as a church (which all in all is good news because we are in a good place).  There is a challenge in this as well.

First the challenge: Each year at the annual meeting the congregation approves a budget that includes the amount of money that we believe that the congregation will give. In essence, those who approve that budget are pledging to give that amount. The budget is planned based on what we believe we will spend and what we think we will receive.  This year we are well below the planned/pledged amount of budgeted giving at this time of the year. Our pace is 12.6 percent behind where we as a church believed we would be and should be to accomplish our ministry tasks. That amounts to $16,000 in shortfall, below what we agreed to give.

The good news is that our bottom line is very good.  This is because our expenses are below what we predicted and below our revenue!  We are in the black so far for 2017, which as I said is good news.  That said, there are some large expenses remaining over the last two months.

My hope is that this call to generosity challenges you to help narrow that gap in giving so that we can continue to pursue our mission . I don’t want to make the false equivalency that generosity equals giving to the church—that would put a real limit on what is possible when Christ creates generous people.  However, generous people make what we do in the church possible.  Thank you for your generosity and for your support!

We are waiting for, with and in Christ!  The series will help us to explore some of those characteristics of our Christian waiting.  Last week we talked about waiting in God’s faithfulness not just our own.  This week we will be using 2 Peter 3:8-15a for our Scripture text and talking about waiting in zealousness
Christmas Hampers @ Green Timbers Elementary School

We will be joining Green Timbers Elementary in providing  Christmas Hampers to families in our neighbourhood.  There will be ten families supported.  The Fullerton Fund provides a gift card for additional food.   We will need help delivering the hampers from the school on Friday, December 15th at 9 AM.
Christmas Eve Carols and Candles

Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday  this year.  We will have our regular Sunday morning service as well as our Evening Candlelight Service at 6pm.  Come for a service of Christmas carols and candles.  Invite friends to join you—people are often more open to coming to church during the Christmas season.  It can be a great introduction to our church family.  We will end the night with hot chocolate and candy canes again!
