Still Standing
A PlanetPaul project

December 2017

When people talk about Paul Du Toit's art they tend to remember his joyful, primitive faces gouged in electric colours onto canvas. However, there was another more important medium that drove him - sculpture. Paul’s figures came in a variety of shapes, sizes, colours and materials. He created in wood, steel, aluminium, fibreglass, resin, concrete, canvas and bronze.  All his works had in common a sense of humour and honesty. His sculpture was an extension of his painting, which in turn was an extension of his world view.

From his early beginnings in 1997, his anti-intellectual approach soon drew resistance and outright antagonism from the art world. Still Standing was created four years later to celebrate his survival in that world. Not only had he endured, he had developed a strong body of work with international recognition.
Still Standing is a glorious five fingered salute to the establishment who had cut him off.

The original 2001 sculpture has been laser scanned, 3D printed and enlarged to a 1.54m artwork. The figure was cast in bronze at Bronze Age, the foundry that has been casting Paul’s work for the last 17 years and knows his creative processes intimately.
