AL.com's Crepea reports Virginia Tech AD Babcock & UConn boss Benedict are not interested in the open Auburn AD post. Crepea's news should come as little surprise after Babcock publicly noted his satisfaction in Blacksburg & Benedict just inked a new contract in Storrs. Crepea indicates Utah State AD Hartwell, NFL CIO McKenna-Doyle & Arise Virtual Solutions CEO Etheridge may still be in the mix, points to "sometime in January if not sooner" for a hire on The Plains. Though Gonzaga in the Big East seems like a far flung idea, literally, Bulldogs AD Roth comments on the topic as headlining MBB reporter Katz says GU would love access to the league. Roth: "One of my jobs is to pay attention to the landscape. There’s no harm in having discussions. […] For Gonzaga to enter into the discussion it would have to take some sort of out-of-the-box thinking, probably involving TV partners and multiple parts of the country and time zones. In some ways, that’s what the Big Ten did with (adding) Maryland and Rutgers when they didn’t have that East Coast footprint. […] What does the future look like for college basketball alone because of the trigger of the NCAA scandal (from the FBI investigation) things might change? Does it also trigger discussions of megaconferences for basketball? One piece that’s out there is do you follow the football model with a I-A and I-AA? Those are just some of the things people are floating out there." A bit more. (link)
Second day of the 2017 Learfield Intercollegiate Athletics Forum in New York City. Some highlights:
+ AAC Commish Aresco continued to say his league has no interest in a 'Group of 5' national championship tourney format. Believes an AAC program can get in the CFP top four, though it will be very difficult. Also in the opening session of the day, Learfield's Brown with an impassioned position on the state of AD tenures & Conference USA boss MacLeod mentioned the possibility of one- or four-year scholarship offers that could be tied to transfer regulations. (link)
+ ESPN MBB analyst Williams: "If you don't have the knowledge of how the grassroots hoops underworld works, you'll never understand how to fix it. How is the money funneled, how does it all come together." (link)
+ Utah State AD Hartwell indicated he & his peers will heavily discuss rights deals at next week's league meetings & rank the importance of exposure, revenue & scheduling (kick/tip times). Hartwell also said the three Aggies FB games that streamed through Facebook Live generated an average of 1.3M views. (link)
+ "Consensus on top issues for student-athletes, according to D1 Council panel: Time demands, financial aid, health and safety, transfer rules." (link); The NCAA's Lennon: "The ultimate question is this, regarding transfer rules: what is fair for the young people [student-athletes] that doesn't create much bigger issues at the institutional level?" (link)
+ Learfield SVP for Integrated Marketing Taylor: "Having beer sales at sporting events isn't just a revenue play. It's part of the shared fan experience that goes far deeper than just generating revenue in direct sales." (link)
+ Rutgers AD Hobbs on eSports, "If I pulled up Twitch right now, there might be someone practicing on @lolesports with 57,000 people watching live. That's practicing! Imagine if football could fill a stadium like that?" (link); Utah eSports leader Dimick: "The difference between sports and esports is purely semantic. Esports teams have positions, they watch film, they scout opponents, they do team workouts and focus on fitness and nutrition, they benefit from multi-sport participation." (link)

+ SBD with, I'm sure, an excellent review of Day 1, I just don't have a ladder large enough to get over the wall. Hopefully you do. (link)
USF gets an anonymous $1M commitment for its $40M FB Center push, brings its total haul thus far to $6M after just a month of momentum. Bulls AD Harlan mentions the facility could be built in phases. (link, link); Utah Valley gets $5.5M from Utah Community Credit Union, renames its Baseball stadium to reflect UCCU's commitments & extends the credit union's naming deal for the Wolverines' hoops home. The agreements now run concurrently through June of 2027. (link)
Two more reads of interest from USA Today on FB AC pay, the first of which looks at staffs where family members work together. Nepotism laws & regulations vary from school to school & state to state. At Purdue, OC Brian Brohm & Director of FB Operations Greg Brohm were allowed to join their brother since the pair brought "considerable experience in football and because of their familiarity with Jeff Brohm’s vision and his trust in them to fulfill key roles within the football program." However, at UConn, HC Edsall has run into some state ethics issues with his son's position as tight ends coach. FAU AD Chun on brother Chris & father Monte aiding the Owls' HC, "(Chris) could’ve got the job on his own merit...Monte is extremely overqualified for the position he’s in." (link); Eight incentive/bonus "quirks" in some AC deals center around the achievement of statistical markers, like the "reasonably ascertainable performance goals" set by Huskies AD Benedict & HC Edsall for OC Lashlee & DC Crocker that can earn the pair upwards of $50K. More. (link)
USA Today's Wolken dives in on the subject of sports gambling for college athletics, notes the progress of the Supreme Court's hearing of PAPSA, along with former UNLV AD Livengood's proclamation, "It’s inevitable. It’s not about gaming, it’s about how you regulate it. I know it’s self-serving, but Vegas regulates it as well as anybody. This isn’t an if — it’s a when. It’s going to happen." On Wednesday in NYC, NCAA Prez Emmert acknowledged the possibility of legalization, but pointed to a needed carve out to prohibit wagering on college athletics. Emmert also indicated the governing body & its member institutions should not make a dollar from subsidiary gambling activities if a carve out is not achieved. SEC Commish Sankey & Big 12 boss Bowlsby noted they have an eye on proceedings, but it's still too early to predict a ruling or potential outcomes. Wolken argues, "Sports gambling is good for college sports. It drives interest and popularity. And if it’s going to be legalized nationwide, the smart and progressive leagues will find a way to capitalize on it rather than fight it and get left in the dust." (link)
"Five to six years" is the timeline Interim New Mexico Prez Abdallah identifies for Lobos athletics to pay back $4.7M worth of deficit money to the university. How? "One is either by generating more revenues, the other is cutting more costs. […] Transferring from other reserves, being able to pay off this debt, basically, so this debt is no longer going to be on our books." Overestimations on ticket sales looks to be one area that's created the gap, Abdallah says that practice will get much more analysis moving forward. (link)

Stanford Professor Katila shares how "Too Many Experts Can Hurt Your Innovation Projects" for Harvard Business Review. Katila's research indicates innovation does best when expert users comprise 40% of an invention team, "any less and the company will lose sight of what its customers need; any more and the group will tend to converge on old ideas." To avoid these "pitfalls:" 1. Find the right roles for the right people; 2. Know how your role affects you; and 3. Be open about what you do not know. (link)

Add Michigan FB HC Harbaugh to the list of those who support a 16-team CFP: "I would just analyze it in terms of every other sport whether its gymnastics, basketball, pro football, FCS football ... pick a sport and they have a playoff to get to a champion. None of them start with the last four. You have a great model with the NFL with their 12 teams and a great model in the FCS with their 16 teams and they just (increased) it to 24. Eight teams would be better than four and 12 would be better than eight. I think 16 is kind of the sweet spot. The national champion now is playing 15 games, 14 games for the teams in the playoffs. They are already playing a lot of games." (link)
Questions surround Oregon MBB HC Altman's knowledge of rape allegations connected to former Ducks & current LSU student-athlete Bigby-Williams from his previous stop at Gillette College in Wyoming. Altman & UO previously said they were aware of an on-going investigation at Gillette, but weren't privy to details. Phone records show Altman talked to Deputy AD/SWA/Deputy Title IX Coordinator Peterson five times within the first 48 hours of the allegations surfacing. Statement from the university: "The information in Coach Altman’s phone records in no way contradicts what has been said all along: the university did not, through its Title IX office or others, share information about the Bigby-Williams investigation with the coaching staff." More. (link)
Former Ole Miss FB HC Freeze tells Gridiron Now's Baribeau he wants to be back on the sidelines: "Saturday is the most difficult day. My typical week usually goes – I’ll start on Tuesday – Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday are usually pretty good. Jill (his wife) and I have good family time, good marriage-building stuff. It’s just been awesome for us to spend this time together because we haven’t had this much time. ... Then Saturday comes and I get into an almost depressed mode and then I have to pray and fight through that. I kind of get by myself, don’t want to be around anybody. And that kind of carries over on through Saturday night. Sunday morning, then we go to church and I kind of get back on the upswing. It usually takes me ’til Monday afternoon to count all my blessings and trust God with my future. But Saturday is by far the most difficult. ... I really believe I have a lot to offer a program whether as an assistant or a head coach, and I’m hopeful it’s very soon. That program will get a very determined, motivated, better Coach Freeze if given a second chance." More. (link)
More FB HC Notes: Tennessee AD Fulmer makes it official with Alabama DC Pruitt to lead the Vols. Pruitt, who received a six-year, $3.8M deal: "There was a time and place where this university was feared among SEC teams. My goal as the head football coach of the University of Tennessee is to get us back to that point." (link); Former Nebraska HC Riley returns to Corvallis, where he has twice been the HC, to serve as an AC at Oregon State for newly-hired HC Smith. (link); South Alabama AD Erdmann names Central Arkansas' Campbell as the Jags next HC. (link); Looks like Florida A&M will hire Tallahassee native and Prairie View A&M HC Simmons to the same role. (link); Hampton selects East Carolina DC Prunty, who previously worked on defensive staffs at Cincinnati and Texas Tech, as the Pirates' next HC. (link); Some Montana faculty have written to school officials seeking reconsideration of the hiring of new HC Hauck. The letter, in part: "Rehiring Hauck is a slap in the face to all the staff, faculty, and students (including student-athletes) who have worked tirelessly to improve UM's reputation and establish us as a leader in sexual assault prevention." UM says it will not reconsider the contract and AD Haslam responds: "I am absolutely committed to operating an athletic department that is focused on success in the classroom, community and competition. I know Coach Hauck joins me in that commitment." (link)
More HC & Personnel Updates: Kentucky WBB HC Mitchell inks an extension that could keep him in Lexington to 2022. No increase right now to Mitchell's base of $825K, but he will received 5% annual raises. $250K bonus for an Elite Eight appearance, $400K for Final Four & $500K for national championship. (link); Still no word on the status of Georgia Tech MBB AC LaBarrie. (link); Youngstown State AD Strollo tabs Duquesne AC Shrum as the new Women's Soccer boss for the Penguins. (link)
Presbyterian will add Men's Wrestling effective next year & then Women's Wrestling, the first for a DI institution, in 2019-20. The Men will compete in the Southern Conference with the Women operating as an independent as currently only a handful of institutions around the nation sponsor the sport. National Wresting Coaches Association Executive Director Moyer: "This a monumental moment for our sport." (link)

Nielsen & ESPN's push to measure all forms of video consumption for network programming, including the ever-growing digital stream, pays off for the Worldwide Leader as data shows a 13% lift in primetime & 4% bump overall. Even more promising is engagement from the 18-34 demo, which showed viewership increases of 23%. Now the questions is if higher ad rates can be negotiated based on the new measurement construct. (link)

Ole Miss AD Bjork continues to engage with the media given the recent developments around his FB program. Resists the urge to look back & analyze if the Rebels should have handled the NCAA process any differently, "Since the appeal process is starting, I am sure we will have time, after it is all said and done, to analyze the entire ordeal. I know we will have learned many lessons, but right now our focus is on the appeal process." On his tenure in Oxford thus far, "Today’s world of college athletics has become a complicated wave of many leadership challenges … and opportunities. We have experienced so many great things for the program that the good stuff far outweighs the bad stuff. Plus, connecting with people and trying to make a difference for others is what leadership is all about. I am proud of our work and look forward to putting the challenges behind us so we can focus on the great things about college athletics and Ole Miss." More. (link); Also, as part of the NCAA process, the Rebels have disassociated with six boosters. (link)
Florida Atlantic AD Chun on the Owls increased attendance numbers at FAU Stadium during FB HC Kiffin's first year: "Winning does matter in this market, and this market is as complex as there is in (the country). This is a highly competitive market, and we recognize that." FAU, which had four games with fewer than 10K fans last season, averaged 17,941 this year after its first winning season since 2008. Despite a rise in overall attendance, maintaining student numbers continues to plague Chun: "There are incremental wins in terms of what’s going on with attendance. There is no easy solution because attendance is a national problem in all sports. If there was a solution, I’m sure someone would’ve thought of it." (link)
Colorado AD George also discusses an attendance improvement for FB in Boulder, also notes the sell-out of 11,500 student passes for the 2017 campaign. The Buffs went from 18,011 season tix moved in 2016 to 20,808, the sixth largest jump since records have been kept. Average attendance jumped by around 500 to 47,056. George: "Any time you have growth in attendance, I think it's important. […] If we come back and have another great recruiting class and we have a good spring, I think people will get excited and continue to support the direction we're going." (link)
The FB build at Kennesaw State is reviewed through the lens of an important relationship between former Prez Papp & former Georgia AD/FB HC Dooley who combined to push the effort back in the late '00s. The Owls are currently 12-1 & headed to Sam Houston State for an FCS quarterfinal matchup tomorrow. Not too shabby for a program in just its third year of existence. Papp: "You could have never expected (success) to be this quick." Dooley: "It’s a great tribute to (coach) Brian (Bohannon) and his staff with what has happened, but I wouldn’t have thought it would have been this fast. I envisioned down the road, and part of the reason we recommended we have football was because, down the road, we felt we could contend for a championship." (link)
Around Higher Ed: Youngstown State Prez Tressel gets another year added onto his contract, now signed through June 2019, pay remains at $300K. (link); Sources to the AJC indicate Kennesaw State Prez Olens "will be looking for another high profile job soon." Olens has been heavily in the media due to the university's handling of spirit squad members who chose to kneel during the national anthem early in the Fall semester. (link); University of Texas System Chancellor McRaven will keep his job beyond its 2017 expiration date and continue working for the system in 2018, but without a contract for his $1.2M/year position. (link)
Also Noticed: Former Northern Iowa AD Hartzell named AD at Upper Iowa (DII). (link); The Louisville Arena Authority sold $388M in bonds to restructure the KFC Yum Center's debt in an effort to avoid default. Interest rate of around 4.5% is much better than the 6.45% back in 2008 for the original bond offer. (link); South Carolina MBB HC Martin not super happy as FB hangover days seem to be impacting his attendance numbers, "It would be nice if our marketing department helps us to get people in seats. It’s a little disappointing to continue to play — after the 2 winningest years in history of the school — in a building w/ 4-5,000 people. It’s embarrassing." (link); Notre Dame & BYU won't play on the gridiron in 2019 or 2020, after all. Sounds like ND owes the Cougars some cash. (link); Notre Dame & Syracuse will matchup in Yankee Stadium next season. (link); Check out Wichita State's licensed beer: Wushock Wheat. (link); Former Michigan State doctor Nassar gets a 60-year sentence. (link); Memphis is working with local police to investigate threatening comments made toward MBB student-athletes on Instagram. (link); St. Lawrence brass are investigating claims of mistreatment on its Men's Hockey squad. (link)
Colorado AD Rick George saw a FB ticket sales & attendance jump in Boulder last season & discussed fundraising for the Buffs in a 1.Q after a super successful 2016 campaign. George pointed to the impact for the "Drive for $105M" campaign, plus longterm planning & strategy topics. Listen by clicking the link. (link) (length - 6:07)
