Science Europe promotes co-operation and networking between research organisations at both policy and activity level.

New Science Europe President and Governing Board

As of 30 November 2016, Marc Schiltz is the new President of Science Europe. The CEO of the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) was elected on that date by the General Assembly of Science Europe. He is joined by a renewed Governing Board and by Vice-President Ingrid Petersson of the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development, who was re-elected for a second term.

(c) FNR/Christoph Weber Marc Schiltz has been an active supporter of Science Europe since its Founding Assembly in 2011 and recently served two years as a member of its Governing Board. Schiltz: “I believe that Science Europe holds great potential for shaping the future of European research. It is the forum where the most important research funding and research performing organisations join forces. Their collaboration can impact the future of research in Europe in a way that no single organisation would be able to achieve on its own.”

Marc Schiltz succeeds Michael Matlosz, who was President of Science Europe from 2015 to 2017. See the Science Europe website for an overview of all members of the new Governing Board.

Science Without Borders at 2017 SAC Symposium

On 29 November, the Scientific Advisory Committee of Science Europe held its second annual Symposium. It was a very successful event, in which members of the Committee – themselves active researchers from across Europe – discussed with Science Europe Member Organisations and European institutions what is needed to create a truly borderless science. The 'inner borders' within the scientific system were considered a topic of particularly high importance.

Support for Aims of European Open Science Cloud

Science Europe feels that research data should be permanently, publicly, and freely available for re-use. The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is an initiative by the European Commission to set up a cloud service for research data that should help make that goal a reality.

Although Science Europe supports the aims of the EOSC, there are still a number of questions on how it will work in practice. The Governing Board of the association released an Open Letter to support ongoing efforts and share what Science Europe Members are already doing in this area.

Busting Myths on Text and Data Mining

The ability to perform large-scale automated analysis of research data is of crucial importance to the development of European research and the European economy. There are, however, several persistent myths and misunderstandings about text and data mining.

Science Europe, LIBER, EARE, EUA, and SPARC have teamed up to dispel some of these myths and set the record straight. Did you know, for example, that nearly all research today involves both public and private parties, and that a TDM exception for commercial parties in the upcoming Copyright Directive is hugely important for research?
