Call for 2018 HBMLP Staff

Dear Woodenfish HBMLP Alumni,

Amituofo! This year has been an exciting one for the Woodenfish Foundation. We have established a strong base both in Beijing and in New York.  We have organized many new programs and activities on both sides of the Pacific. If you have read our recent newsletters you will be familiar with this.

However, we have not forgotten our longest running program: the Humanistic Buddhist Monastic Life Program (HBMLP).

HBMLP is focused on three vital pillars:

1. Academic Study (Prajna, Hui) 慧

2. Monastic Life (Sila, Jie) 戒

3. Meditation (Samadhi, Ding) 定

The time has now come for us to select a new group of staff for our 2018 program.

Are you the one we are looking for?

We are looking for staff who are:
  • HBMLP alumni interested and available to work in China from late June through early August 2018
  • Familiar with the unique nature of the program and enthusiastic about the mission to bridge East and West, and the world of lived Buddhist practice and academia.
  • Reliable, professional, and self-disciplined.
  • Calm under pressure and able to work well within a team
  • Friendly and positive...
  • ...but comfortable enforcing monastery rules and maintaining discipline when necessary

  • Have experience with Buddhism or related fields, either through personal practice or academic study. (This is preferred, not required)
  • Chinese speakers, both native and not. (This is also preferred, not required)

What you get:

  • A unique and amazing experience with Chinese Buddhist Monasticism and lived Buddhism in China today. Experiencing HBMLP behind the scenes is different than life as a student, but incredibly rewarding.

  • A chance to help lead the way for the next generation of Woodenfish students.
  • A chance to make friends from all over the world. In 2017 we had participants from over 20 countries!
  • More time to learn directly from Ven. Yifa :)
  • Something impressive to put on your resume (we write great reference letters!)
  • Flight and visa costs covered, as well as a small stipend.

What we ask of you:
  • Some work in the months leading up to the program. This may include publicity of the program (mainly electronic), helping to process applications, and answering students' questions on social media.
(Approximately 2 -3 hrs per week or less)
  • Some preparation work for the program. This can include self-study, preparation of workshops, and familiarization with the accepted students.
  • Full and total commitment during both the July (HBMLP) and August (CitiZen) programs.  (Approximately June 25th through August 8th).
  • Some simple tasks following the program as needed.

Global CitiZen Program
The Global CitiZen Program was started in 2015 and is a short version of the HBMLP that is oriented to Chinese youth. The program takes place in a monastery close to Beijing and is conducted completely in English. The foreign staff will teach simple classes on Buddhism as well as on Western culture. We will be joined by a group of Chinese staff. The program will be one week long and take place in early August.

We ask our HBMLP staff to also commit to staffing this program. If for some reason you are not able to stay for this program, but still would like to join the staff for HBMLP, please get in touch and we might be able to make special arrangements.  However, preference will be given to those who are available for both programs.

Staff Application Deadline: January 10th, 2018

Application procedure:
Write us an application letter and send it to hbmlp@woodenfish.org. In the letter please discuss your qualifications, both personal and formal, for becoming staff and mention what ways in particular you can contribute.
