Christmas Newsletter 2017
It's been a busy few months for neuroscience in Ireland and here we hope to give you a snapshot of what's been happening. Have a terrific Christmas everyone, and we'll be back with more news in the New Year!

With best wishes from Eilís, André, Derek, Áine, Eric and all of your NSI Council
BNA Xmas Symposium
The BNA held their Annual Xmas Symposium in Canary Wharf, London on Monday 18th December. Eilís Dowd and Derek Costello were in attendance to initiate planning for BNA 2019 which will be held in Dublin in collaboration with NSI (more below).

Dervila Glynn

NSI would also like to offer our warmest congratulations to Irish woman Dervila Glynn on winning the Public Engagement Award at the BNA Xmas Symposium on Monday.

Well done Dervila! Were all very proud of you here in Ireland!
Dervila is from Galway originally and completed her BSc in Biotechnology at NUI Galway before going on to a PhD in Pharmacology at University of Cambridge.

Dervila is now Strategic Manager with Cambridge Neuroscience which is a multidisciplinary network of over 700 neuroscientists at University of Cambridge and affiliated Institutes. Cambridge Neuroscience and Dervila can be followed on Twitter here.

Dervila will also take on the role of Chair of the FENS Communications Committee at the FENS Forum in Berlin in July 2018.
Sarah Tabrizi speaks at NECTAR 2017
The global Huntington’s disease community was enthralled last week with the announcement of Ionis Pharmaceuticals’ “top line” results from their first-in-human trial of a new drug for Huntington’s disease in which they stated that the drug “substantially exceeded” all expectations. The trial was led by Prof Sarah Tabrizi from University College London who was in Dublin recently presenting her work at NECTAR, a major international brain repair conference.

In a news piece on the NSI website, Eilís Dowd cuts through the hype to explain why there is genuine cause for hope. Read it here.
FENS History Online Award
Congratulations to Richard Roche for winning a coveted FENS History Online award for his project entitled "A Virtual Museum of Irish Brain Science". Richard's project will result in the creation of a virtual museum of mental life, of which brain science/neuroscience will form the core. This website will act as an archival resource housing and/or linking to the contents of the various brain science collections in Ireland, while also flagging the contributions of key figures in the history of Irish brain science.

A poster outline Richard's winning project will be shown at the History Corner at the FENS Forum in Berlin in July 2018
NSI Ireland will also be preparing a separate poster for the History Corner at FENS in which we will outline the role that Irish physician William Brooke O'Shaughnessy played in the introduction of medicinal cannabis to Western medicine. O'Shaughnessy was born in Limerick in 1809, and is considered a pioneer of the medicinal use of Cannabis sativa.
SfN Irish Night - Irish Embassy Washington, DC
On November 14th, the Ambassador of Ireland to the United States of America, Daniel Mulhall, hosted an Irish night for Irish attendees of SfN in association with Transpharmation Ireland, NSI, UCC and TCD. Huge thanks to Ambassador Mulhall for facilitating this event, and to John Cryan, Anand Gururajan, Thomas Ryan, Jack Prenderville and Massimiliano Bianchi for organising.

A few snaps from the event are shown below - these (and more) can be seen properly on the NSI Twitter feed if you scroll back to 11th - 15th November.
FENS Forum of Neuroscience 2018
The 11th FENS Forum of Neuroscience will take place in Berlin, Germany from 7th to 11th July 2018. The 2018 Forum will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of the formation of FENS, and to mark this occasion, NSI are delighted to announce that we will be offering 10 Travel Awards to attend FENS. Details will be posted on our website early in 2018.

We also plan to host a joint NSI-BNA social night at FENS 2018 to launch BNA2019 - we'll keep you posted about this.

NSI is a member of this Federation of European Neuroscience Societies, and we hope that there will be lots of Irish neuroscience on show at FENS 2018!
BNA 2019 Festival of Neuroscience
The BNA Festival of Neuroscience will take place in Dublin from 14th to 17th April 2017 in collaboration with NSI. This is a momentous and historical occasion as it is the first time that the BNA have held their conference outside of Britain. NSI is really excited about this event and we hope that it will give us an opportunity to showcase the exceptional neuroscience research that is taking place on this island.

More information on the event can be seen by clicking on the image below.
The call for symposia and workshops will be announced in January 2018, so get your thinking caps on! NSI will be involved in the selection of symposia and workshops, so please feel free to email us in addition to BNA with your ideas.
Changes to the NSI Council

NSI would like to welcome Tobias Engel as the second RCSI representative on the NSI Council alongside our Immediate Past President, David Henshall. Tobias will join the Board from January 2018.

NSI would like to thank Eric Downer from TCD who will soon take on the on the role of Communications Office for NSI. Eric will take up his new role from January 2018.
