BUILDING COMMUNITIES 
2018 SESSION UPDATE 

Tuesday, January 9th, 2018 marked the start of the 2018 Florida Session! 

Legislation
This legislative session the Florida Alliance of YMCAs will be tracking bills that relate to the following topics: (HB = House Bill | SB = Senate Bill)

  • Controlled Substances/Opioids (HB21/SB 8) (HB 3785*)
  • Financial Literacy as a H.S Graduation Requirement (SB 88)
  • Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety (HB 117)
  • Licensure of Child Care Programs (HB 1129/SB 1520)
  • Safe Neighborhood Improvement Loans (HB 1405/SB 1814)
  • YMCA of Central Florida - After School Programs (HB 2765*)
  • Northwest Jacksonville YMCA Teen Programming (HB 3759*)
Appropriations
Florida Alliance of YMCAs has submitted the following appropriation requests: 
  • Youth In Government (Sen. Stargel) - $400,000
  • USFSP/YMCA Civics Fellows (Rep Grant (J)/Sen. Brandes) - $263,458
  •  YREADS! (Recurring money does not require sponsor) - $764,972
  •  Safety Around Water (Rep. J. Gonzalez/Sen. Hukill)  - $250,000

CONNECTING EACH OTHER
YPN PRIME MEMBERSHIP

The YMCA Professional Network (YPN), a leadership development network for Y staff, has launched the eLearning module required for Prime membership. All Y staff are eligible for YPN membership staring Jan. 1. However prime membership-which includes additional benefits and discounts on select eLearnings and events-requires a $65 annual fee and completion of the eLearning.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Y-USA Funding Opportunities 
The Strategic Initiatives Fund (SIF) offers YMCAs opportunities to expand capacity and improve facility quality; strengthen policies, practices and programs; and increase opportunities for children in low-income and vulnerable communities to participate in YMCA programs. A few of these grants include:

  • Camp Access Inclusion Opportunity - Due January 31, 2018
  • Swim Lessons Scholarship Grant Opportunity - Due January 24, 2018

Application deadlines for multiple grants related to camp and swim are fast approaching. Learn more and apply. 

Florida YMCA Safety Around Water 
We are pleased to announce the 2018 State Safety Around Water Grant Opportunities. There will be two opportunities this year: 

  1.  SAW/Swim Lesson Grant - This grant is for the conduction of Safety Around Water(SAW)/Swim Lessons for underserved and under resourced areas. This grant can be applied for as an association or by individual branch. (NOTE: This application is very similar to the Y-USA Swim Access Grant, Ys are encouraged to apply for both Swim Access and SAW/Swim Lesson Grant.)
  2.  Drowning Prevention Partnership Grant - This grant is for the creation, or advancement of a Local Drowning Prevention Task Force in your area. 

They are due in January, 24th 201​8​ and will be submitted via e-mail to scott@floridayig.net

Y-USA Evidence-Based Health Intervention
Interested in adding an evidence-based health intervention (EBHI) to your Y's offerings, like Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring, YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program, LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, Healthy Weight and Your Child, or Enhance®Fitness? Join a webinar Jan. 10 to learn about what organizational capacities your Y needs to offer an EBHI, deliverables for each grant and timelines.

Aging Projects 
The Retirement Research Foundation is accepting proposals from nonprofit organizations for local and national projects designed to improve the quality of life for older Americans.

Grants will be awarded for projects that provide direct services, advocacy, education and training programs for professionals working with elders, as well as for research that investigates causes and solutions to significant problems of older adults.
