San Shou Kuan Review

Welcome to this our fourth end of year newsletter. San Shou Kuan has already been going for four years.  Each year is more successful and more action packed.  Lets go back to the beginning, Dave and Pete started SSK with just three classes and 25 members. Membership now stands at well over 100 and there are now ten classes each week with numerous specialised classes and events throughout the year.

Since 2013 we have conducted eight Black Belt gradings; countless Regional gradings; four week long intensive courses for actors and stunt men and women.   Our bi-Annual SSK Taolu and Sanda Tournament has completed its second successful year. We have conducted several very popular specialist seminars with guest instructors.  We continue to develop innovative training programmes and syllabus updates (children's and veterans syllabus; basic MMA ground escapes and take downs) with new events planned through the forthcoming year.

25 Degree Black Belts Awarded

Over the course of these four years 25 members have gained Black Belt or Higher Dan grades (eight of these individuals gained their 2nd or 3rd Degree Black Belts).  Each one of these succeeding were so many have failed. This includes our latest First Dan (Degree) Black Belt Simon Hoaran; congratulations Simon.

One of our innovations has been the development of a veterans coaching skills assessment for senior Dan grades who are not as agile as they once were but still make a valuable contribution through coaching and mentoring.  Through this we encourage our senior Black Belts to continue to train and develop their skills.

British Sanda & Qing Da Championships

We have entered competitors in the British Chinese Council Martial Arts (BCCMA) National Sanda Competitions since 2015. This year we had competitors in the Sanda and the veterans Qing Da. The team took away awards in all divisions entered.  In 2018 we are aiming for even more success.

Talking of Sanda success John Machell succeeded in capturing the British under 75kg title at the National Championship a highly prized and fought over title. John beat a number of experienced Sanda fighters to gain the British title.  It is no surprise that John also won our very own SSK Sanda and Taolu Tournament for the second year in a row.  John is hoping to qualify for the GB Squad that will be competing in the  European Championships in 2018.  We wish him well with his endeavours for 2018 and look forward to continued success hopefully with other members joining him.
