  New Ship Line Acquisitions Unfold

There is a lot moving on the ship line front!

Maersk Transport & Logistics’ has now acquired Hamburg Süd in creating a stronger business alliance on the same day Hapag Lloyd finalized its merger with United Arab Shipping Company. Hapag Lloyd will now offer 125 liner services in a global network as a result of the UASC merger.

Maersk Group is the world’s largest container line, with this new acquisition placing them at a strong position in the north-south trade between the United States and Latin America. Maersk Line, SeaLand and Hamburg Sud controlled 14.1 percent of the trade in the first either months of the year, which is the same as the 2016 year prior. The three Maersk Group combined share of imports ranked at number two with a 13.6% market share behind MSC, with their share of exports being the largest at 14.5%.

Hamburg Sud will remain a commercially independent carrier under Maersk, though its services network will be expanded greatly.
