December 2017

Seasons Greetings! The New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO thanks you for your support of our work this year. We wish you a refreshing holiday break and look forward to continuing to share our activities with you in 2018.

Water project in Samoa

Watch: Water project in Samoa

Access to clean water and sanitation is a fundamental human right and one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The National Commission is proud to support a project that seeks easy solutions to assessing water quality in Samoa, led by Massey University and the National University of Samoa. This will enable local communities to manage and monitor their own water.
Big Girl's Doco

Watch: Big Girls documentary

Rangiwahia Environmental Arts Centre Trust (REACT) has made an outstanding documentary about its Big Girls project, which happened earlier in 2017. The National Commission provided funding for this inspirational project, which brought together refugee and migrant women who call Aotearoa New Zealand home to make giant puppet representatives of their cultures and parade them at events.

Paper on use of evidence for transformative education

The Ministry of Education recently released a paper ‘Walking the talk’ matters in the use of evidence for transformative education, written by Dr Adrienne Alton-Lee. The paper is a think piece for the International Bureau of Education – UNESCO Project: Rethinking and repositioning curriculum in the 21st century: A global paradigm shift. It highlights the importance of using evidence about what works for accelerating achievement, building social competencies and supporting learner wellbeing and belonging (e.g. reducing bullying) to prepare children for a new age of change.

Looking ahead to 2018

We’re looking forward to another busy year in 2018. Activities supported by the National Commission that are coming up early in the New Year include A Waka Odyssey (from 23 February) – a theatrical event at the New Zealand Festival which will see a majestic fleet of waka hourua (double-hulled sailing canoes) from around New Zealand helping re-tell New Zealand's origin story – and the Second Pacific Climate Change Conference (21-23 February). Chair Robyn Baker will also speak at the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand’s event to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day on 26 January.
