DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. PRAYER SERVICE
This year's MLK Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, January 11 in Spain Auditorium, 1:00-2:00 p.m. The featured speaker is Altha Stewart, MD ('73), president-elect of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the first African-American female
slated to become president of the organization. Dr. Stewart is vice-chair of the Memphis Juvenile Justice Board, a cross system advisory body that works in a community partnership seeking program improvements and policy changes to address the needs of youth at risk of delinquency. She is a native Memphian who graduated from public and parochial schools, and was among the first class of women admitted to CBU. She received her medical degree from Temple University Medical School. The service will also feature musical selections from CBU’s Divine Voices Gospel Choir and Alisa Caldwell, founder and CEO of Psalms Music Ministry. More info…
LET THE GAMES BEGIN… AGAIN
Come to Montesi Executive Center on Wednesday, January 10 at 7:30 p.m. for the Intramural Team Captains Meeting and learn how to get involved in intramural sports. Dean Helton, a representative from the Kroc Center, will be on hand to discuss his volleyball league and how to sign up. All current students are invited to attend. Please contact Ian A. ACADEMIC INTERNSHIP INFORMATION MEETING
If you are participating in an academic internship this semester, you are expected to attend this meeting on Thursday, January 11 in Montesi Executive Center, 1:00-2:00 p.m. Important information will be provided about internships procedures and guidelines.

MLK SERVICE DAY
The University of Memphis has invited CBU to participate in its MLK service day! This event is scheduled for Friday, January 12 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. The UofM Civic Engagement Board has partnered with over 15 community organizations including local non-profit organizations, local schools, and the city government. The site projects will involve a variety of topics and projects including issues of homelessness, urban gardening and food insecurity, mentoring and tutoring local children in high need areas, park and river beautification, etc. Each participant will be assigned their site at the time of check-in and provided with a boxed lunch. If you are interested in participating, need service hours, or would just like to spend some time engaging with the community of Memphis with fellow college students, faculty, and staff, please fill out the form at this link to ensure your spot — additional details are on the form! We have 50 spots available for our campus, so be sure to sign up ASAP to confirm!

GALLERY OPENING
The Beverly & Sam Ross Gallery will host an opening reception for two new exhibitions on Friday, January 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Opening in the main gallery is "The Sunny Side," an exhibit of recent ceramics by Niles Wallace. Wallace is a widely exhibited clay artist and professor of ceramics at the University of Memphis. Pictured at left is his piece entitled Yearning. Also opening in the foyer is "Forge Cast Fabricate," the annual group exhibit of new works by artists at the Metal Museum. Artists included are apprentices Lewis BodySarah Dorau, and Kacy Ganley; as well as staff artists Kevin Burge, Lori Gipson, Anastasia Green, Eva Langsdon, Jim Masterson, Jeannie Tomlinson Saltmarsh, and James Vanderpool.

'90s TRIVIA NIGHT
Dress up in your best '90s attire and come to the LLC Classroom on Friday, January 12 at 7:00 p.m., ready to compete and answer questions on everyone's favorite '90s films, songs, and TV shows! Prizes for the best-dressed and trivia contest winners.

Congratulations to the 433 students who earned a spot on the Fall 2017 Dean's List! Students awarded Dean's List honors have earned a minimum grade point average of no lower than 3.4 for the semester with the completion of at least 12 credit hours. East Parkway Access to Campus



Effective immediately, the median on East Parkway, from Union Avenue to Central Avenue, will have all of the crossover turn lanes closed
, as well as the southbound turn lane at East Parkway and Central (allowing no left turns from East Parkway to eastbound Central). Access to campus via the East Parkway entrance and the Maurelian entrance must be made from northbound East Parkway. The inside lane for north and southbound East Parkway traffic will also be closed to accommodate construction equipment. The closure is expected to last 45-60 days, while crews install irrigation and landscaping. Construction and landscaping will be taking place daily from 4:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (subject to change). Expect heavy traffic and potential delays if traveling on East Parkway during this period.

Faculty & Staff News


Christopher Koch will be joining CBU in the new position of Chief Operating Officer (COO) effective mid-January. In his position, Chris will oversee Physical Plant and Support Services, Risk Management, Events, Safety/Security, and vendors that supplement those areas, working closely with the offices of Academics and Administration & Finance. Mr. Koch is a dedicated CBU alumnus; he received his bachelor’s degree in marketing from CBU in 1986. He is currently serving as COO for the Catholic Diocese of Memphis, where he oversees overall business and financial planning and operations.
Bahati P. Kayihura has joined the School of Sciences as a full-time visiting instructor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Mr. Kayihura holds a BS from the National University of Rwanda and a MS from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He will be teaching Fundamentals of Algebra and Finite Math this semester. 
Sean MacInnes, administrative assistant for the Rosa Deal School of Arts, will serve as the interim director of the Writing & Communications Corner while Dr. Clayann Panetta is away on sabbatical for the Spring semester. He can be reached at smacinne@cbu.edu or (901) 321-3335.
Dr. Cathy D. Meredith returns to the Rosa Deal School of Arts as associate professor in the Department of Education. She received a BS in Early Childhood Education at the University of Tennessee at Martin, a MS in Counseling and Student Personnel Services at Memphis State University, and her EdD from the University of Memphis. She comes back to the CBU from the University of Memphis, where she's taught undergraduate and graduate elementary and middle school methods courses.

The Office of Student Disabilities Services is offering a series of Brown Bag Luncheons for faculty in the Spring of 2018. Each luncheon focuses on an aspect of a disability and is co-sponsored by Student Disability Services and the Accommodations Committee, Health Resources, the Counseling Center, Rosa Deal School of Arts, and STARS (Students Tackling Autism-Related Syndromes.) Helping to Develop Strategies Working with College Students on the Autism Spectrum

There is an increase in the number of students on the Autism Spectrum attending institutions of higher education each year. It is highly likely that many of you will have these students in your classes. This session will explore characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), recommendations for teaching students with ASD and discuss on campus services in place to support the students. Prevalence of Anxiety: Understanding and Responding to Emotionally Distressed Students
College can be stressful for many college students. As a faculty member, you are sometimes the first to recognize stress in students. This session will explore how to recognize and handle students exhibiting anxiety in the classroom, as well as the various on campus resources available to assist students with anxiety. Presenters are Dr. Rodney Vogl (Chair, Behavioral Science), Chanda Murphy (Instructor, Behavioral Science), and Dr. Colby Taylor (Visiting Assistant Professor, Behavioral Science).

The Distracted Classroom: Addiction and Lack of Impulse Control
Thursday, March 22 • 12:30-1:45 p.m. • Rosa Deal 111

Presenters will discuss the dysfunctional behavior of college students and cell phones in the classroom. Addiction and lack of impulse is one way to explain the dysfunctional behavior. Students’ bodies are sometime in the classroom, but their minds are somewhere else. Faculty will also share tips on how to handle this addiction in the classroom. Presenters are Dr. Rodney Vogl (Chair, Behavioral Science) and Ms. Kim Jameson (STARS). 
WORKSHOP SESSIONS FOR MANAGING STRESS
“YES, YOU HAVE PERMISSION TO FALL ASLEEP DURING THESE PRESENTATIONS…”  If you've never heard that before — or even if you have — the CBU Counseling Center and Student Life staff invite students, faculty, and staff to attend workshops for managing stress, including several simple techniques to relax the body and mind. There will be four different sessions, conducted by Dr. Pong Malasri (Dean of Engineering), and they will be held on consecutive Thursdays — January 18, January 25, February 1, and February 8 — from 1:00 to 1:50 p.m. in the Thomas Center Conference Room. Relax… and attend each of these unique presentations.

CARL/FYL Application and Info Session


Are you a positive, problem solving leader? Do you embrace the opportunity to lead discussions with other students? Then consider becoming a CARL and/or First Year Leader (FYL)!
      The CARL program is available to students who are interested in helping their peers have a fulfilling CBU experience. As a CARL you will lead and mentor new students during summer orientation. First Year Leaders are specially selected upper-class students who are trained and prepared to help students in their transition and adaptation to college life and the CBU community. If you embrace the opportunity to lead a discussion about CBU to incoming freshmen, First Year Leader may be the job for you!
      Come to an information session on Thursday, January 11 at 1:00 p.m. in Rosa Deal 111 to learn more about the CARL and FYL programs and to chat with past CARLs and FYLs to hear all about their experiences as Peer Educators.

News at CBU



President John Smarrelli Jr.
 was a presenter at the The SPARK Awards 2017, which was broadcast live on December 18 on WKNO/Channel 10. The SPARK Awards is the Mid-South's annual televised award show focused on honoring individuals and organizations making a difference in our community. The Awards celebrate and recognize the efforts of individuals, nonprofits, corporations, and schools in 13 different categories, who are igniting change and making a positive impact in the Greater Memphis community. Dr. Smarrelli is shown in the video above presenting the Corporate (500 Plus Employees) Award to Alissa Campbell Shaw of International Paper.

Dr. Smarrelli also joined the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, which launched on December 12. The Alliance is comprised of American college and university leaders dedicated to increasing public understanding of how immigration policies and practices impact students, campuses, and communities. It support policies that create a welcoming environment for immigrant, undocumented, and international students.
CBU IN THE NEWS

Yuritza Sanchez (Engineering Management '21) and her sister Kristal, a top student in her class at Southwind High School, were featured in a December 29 report on Fox 13 Good Morning Memphis about the impending expiration deadline of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

CBU's active participation in and hosting of the December 8 Inside Out/Dreamers art project in support of DACA students was the subject of a December 13 article in High Ground News entitled "Inside Out/Dreamers art project drums up support for Memphis' undocumented young people." The article quoted President John SmarrelliTeresa Escobar (Finance '19), and Mauricio Calvo ('87), executive director of Latino Memphis.
CBU was the focus of a December 22 article in the Memphis Business Journal entitled "CBU and other local colleges avoid 'challenging effect' with final tax bill" which dealt with educational implications in the "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017" passed by Congress and signed into law by the President just before the end of 2017. The article quoted Dr. Paul Haught, VP for Academics and Student Life.

Buc Bulletin



Thursday night's basketball games against West Georgia saw President John Smarrelli at the scorer's table doing color commentary for the radio (above). There was also a sizable alumni audience cheering the Bucs and Lady Bucs on, organized by CBU trustee and alumnus Jim Reber (below).

MEN'S BASKETBALL (12-1, 4-1 GSC): The Bucs finished their non-conference schedule unbeaten with an 86-79 win over Trevecca Nazarene on December 16. Two days later, junior forward Adam Dieball scored 23 of his game-high 30 points in the second half to lead the Bucs to an 86-79 win at Union University. In the first game of the new year on January 2, visiting Auburn-Montgomery shot 53 percent from the field and handed the Bucs their first loss of the season, 77-68. The Bucs came back from the loss last Thursday night by eclipsing the 100-point mark for the first time in more than four years as they rolled to a 104-85 win over West Georgia. But the Bucs suffered their coldest shooting night in nearly two years Saturday in a 71-51 loss at Alabama Huntsville. This week's schedule…
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (4-7, 3-2 GSC): Senior guard Mikaela Blissett scored a career-high 19 points on December 18, but host Union University still claimed an 81-65 win. In their first game of the new year on January 2,  the Lady Bucs never trailed in a 69-54 win over Auburn-Montgomery at Canale Arena as they evened their record in Gulf South Conference play. Last Thursday night, he Lady Bucs led for nearly 34 minutes as they claimed a 70-67 win over West Georgia at Canale Arena. Host Alabama Huntsville ended the third quarter on a 15-2 run to regain the lead for good Saturday as they defeated the Lady Bucs 75-68. This week's schedule…
