Congratulations on making it through fall semester! Here are a few updates from the MU Career Center that we’d like to let you know of before you head out for a well-deserved break later this month. In this month's newsletter, meet an adviser who has a fun way of promoting career services to her students! See how the MU Career Center can help students create a positive online image as well as learn how to utilize our new resource to make searching and finding things on our website easier. We've also included a great story featuring one of our experiential programs for students that was featured in a recent Chancellor's update!

Thank you for all of your support this semester. We look forward to staying in touch when school resumes in January.  We hope you enjoy your winter break!

Warmly,
The MU Career Center Staff

Did you know that the MU Career Center can help students with creating a positive online image? In the growing age of social media, employers are becoming much more likely to research a potential employee’s online presence before completing the hiring process. This begs the question: what exactly does a strong social media page look like?

Things to keep in mind:

  • 72% of recruiters view typos negatively.
  • Employers almost always view drug and alcohol consumption negatively.
  • Any offensive messages should be removed even if they weren’t personally posted by the user and are from a friend. Keeping the message on the profile associates both names with it, so it is best to just remove it.
  • Keep an active account, but avoid going on long rants or tangents that could be viewed as over-sharing.
Social media can also be job-attracting if used properly!
  • A strong LinkedIn profile can make a huge difference in the hiring process.
  • 87% of recruiters are currently using the platform, which is more than double the amount of any other platform that employers use.
  • For a strong profile picture, it is best to use a professional-looking headshot with a neutral background color. (Stop by the MU Career Center’s next LinkedIn photo day on Friday, February 2 free of charge!)
  • Fill out as much information as possible to strengthen your profile.
  • Update your profile often!

If you haven’t gotten a chance to check out the MU Career Center’s new and improved website, we suggest taking a minute to familiarize yourself. There are endless useful resources, including a new addition called Mizzou Career Tools. Career Tools has helped us organize all of our resources, including our handouts – no more broken links or outdated handouts!

If you visit our main page (https://career.missouri.edu), you can access Career Tools by clicking on the ‘Resources’ tab located on the far right of the page. Every printed resource and handout provided at the MU Career Center, in addition to the many online resources we provide and recommend, is available on Mizzou Career Tools for anyone to access online at any time!  Access them all with just a couple of clicks.

Here are three easy ways to navigate Mizzou Career Tools:
  1. ‘Search Career Resources’- This includes four sections titled Explore, Experience, Connect, and Preparation with career related subtopics.
  2. ‘Search Resources By Name’- If you are looking for a specific guide, this is an easy place to search. For example, if you search “résumé”, the MUCC Guide to Résumés is the first result.
  3. ‘Trending Topics’- Are you just interested in career-related material? This might be a useful place to start. The bigger the word, the more popular the topic!

Check out this recent feature in the December 8th edition of the Chancellor's Update, featuring a tutor from Jumpstart, our experiential program that partners college students with at-risk children from local preschools. Jumpstart is already hiring for tutors next semester!  Any interested students can contact Chrissie Dickson at dicksoncn@missouri.edu or (573) 882-8942 for more information.
