A Message From The Facebook Social Good Team

"On behalf of Facebook and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we would like to thank you for participating in our #GivingTuesday $2 million match. Due to the tremendous engagement and enthusiasm by the nonprofit community, the $2 million match limit was reached! Most importantly, together we raised a total of $45 million for worthwhile causes."
Hi, <<First Name>>.

Thank you for having our backs and making GivingTuesday 2017 the MdDS Foundation’s most successful one-day fundraiser ever. With help from Facebook and the Gates Foundation, fourteen MdDS warriors raised a record breaking $15,000 in donations for November. As 2017 comes to a close, we wish to show our appreciation for our supporters whether they be MdDS Warriors, or their friends and family. Since the Foundation is an all-volunteer nonprofit with 96% of donations going directly to research and awareness efforts, your support makes a huge difference for those suffering with MdDS. ~ Terri Gibson, Treasurer

The GivingTuesday fundraiser reported on by Terri was a success because of your generosity and the hard work of dedicated volunteers. Every day, these MdDS Warriors work toward the Foundation's mission and welcome new members to the support groups, send out brochures, help educate new medical professionals, and assist with fundraising. These efforts and your support, together, allowed us to reach our goals for raising awareness and funding scientific research this year. Now, as 2017 comes to an end, it is time to examine the accomplishments of the MdDS Foundation and to set new goals for 2018.

Major Accomplishments

Our website was redesigned and rebuilt from the ground up, to better serve both medical professionals and the general public. And you may have seen the article about Mal de Débarquement Syndrome in the Washington Post or heard Dr. Yoon-Hee Cha’s interview on SiriusXM's Doctor Radio. These were all the result of a targeted outreach campaign, made possible by a major directed donation from the Springbank Foundation and your continuous support.

MdDS Research

We are pleased to announce a new collaboration between researchers at Ohio University and Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, City. In addition to research at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research (LIBR) in Tulsa, OK, this collaboration represents the kind of outside-the-box thinking needed to beat MdDS. [Read more below.]

In 2018, Dr. Cha will move forward with the next phase of her research at LIBR, present at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Conference in Los Angeles, CA, and has been invited to share her work at the International Conference for Vestibular Rehabilitation in Chicago, IL. The inaugural event next summer, sponsored by the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy, is a welcome opportunity as physical therapists are often on the front lines working with MdDS Warriors to manage symptoms.

Behind the Scenes

Much of the Foundation's work happens in the background. In addition to the Board ensuring the fiscal integrity of the Foundation, the research committee examines proposals for validity and patient safety. As new ideas arise, members of the Board investigate the background and future applicability by contacting researchers and practitioners from many backgrounds. This summer, Tyler McNeil joined the Board to assist with these and other endeavors. His expertise in marketing is a welcome addition as we continue to work to connect patients with medical professionals for a quick diagnosis and to find care.

On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I thank you for a very gratifying 2017 and wish for you a happy and healthy new year. We welcome your feedback and ideas on what we can accomplish together in 2018. Contact us at any time through Facebook, Twitter or by email to connect@mddsfoundation.org.

Sincerely,
Marilyn Josselyn
MdDS Foundation Board President

MdDS Research Study at Ohio University

A research study, Development of a Telemedicine Approach for the Treatment of MdDS, is now underway at Ohio University and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai with support provided by the MdDS Foundation. This research effort is designed to develop and test a virtual reality (VR)-based device as an effective, portable, and inexpensive means for home treatment of Mal de Débarquement Syndrome.

Prior clinical research studies at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) provided evidence that MdDS symptoms can be reduced after visualization of stripes moving on a wall while the head is passively moved. A similar optokinetic treatment strategy for reliable, at home use remains to be established. A multidisciplinary and multi-institutional collaborative team at Ohio University and ISMMS will develop and test a device designed to achieve this goal.

Brian Clark, PhDBrian Clark, PhD, will serve as the Principal Investigator with visualization technology and mobile software development by Chang Liu, PhD, at Ohio University. Clinical studies will be performed at Mount Sinai by Mingjia Dai, PhD, and Sergei Yakushin, PhD.

At Ohio University, Dr. Clark is the Executive Director of the Ohio Musculoskeletal and Neurological Institute and Professor of Physiology and Neuroscience in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, and Chang Liu is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. At ISMMS, Dr. Dai is an Assistant Professor and Dr. Yakushin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology.

Resting state functional connectivity signature of treatment effects of rTMS in Mal de Debarquement Syndrome.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been used in experimental protocols to treat Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS), a neurological condition that represents a maladaptive brain state resulting from entrainment to external oscillating motion. Medical treatments and biomarkers for MdDS remain limited but neuromodulation with rTMS has shown evidence for therapeutic effects. The current study took a neuroimaging approach to examine the neuromodulatory effect of rTMS on MdDS.    READ MORE >
Funding for these studies is provided by the MdDS Foundation through a generous on-going directed donation from Ellen Kaye and donations by friends and families of those suffering from MdDS. The Foundation operates as an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation with a mission to promote awareness and research on MdDS.
It's been a terrific year of growth. Our website, completely reimagined and launched mid-year, was visited by nearly 200,000 people from 225 countries. A Physician's Perspective blog post "MdDS Makes You Feel Like You're Still on the Boat" and patient post "MdDS: A year of island hopping" brought more visitors than usual from around the globe to our website. Our summer newsletter, featuring Divina Johnston's doctoral dissertation which raised awareness about life with MdDS, was also popular. You'll find our blog here and past newsletters here. I am excited to see what 2018 brings. ~ Holly Balog, Website Manager
Watch "This is Life With MdDS."
Our new website features an "explainer video" to educate and enlighten anyone just discovering Mal de Débarquement Syndrome  on what a typical day with MdDS might be like. It has been viewed almost 60,000 times on YouTube.

Another feature of the new site is a Find a Doctor interactive tool. It connects patients with local health care professionals. You'll find it on the Living With MdDS page.

P.P.S.: Improving the Find a Doctor feature of our website is just one of several Volunteering opportunities. Please help if you can.
