Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) Updates
Knox County Stormwater has been busy since the start of our fiscal year in July. We have responded to 131 different drainage issues from road, yard, and home flooding. We experienced an approximate 50-year storm event on August 12, 2017 that resulted in numerous flooded areas. Several of these issues get referred to our Environmental Stewardship Program to help solve them with green approaches.

To see if you qualify for the ESP program, visit: https://knoxcounty.org/stormwater/esp.php
The ESP Storyboard
The new Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) Storymap walks the public through the steps of designing and implementing green solutions to address drainage and erosion issues on private property. The Storyboard includes images and examples of projects from start to finish. Solutions include permeable pavers, a rain garden, and a streambank restoration project. Finally, there is a map to see the extent of the ESP program across the county – over 200 projects have been completed since the start of the Environmental Stewardship Program in 2000!

The Knox County Hazard Mitigation Plan
Knox County, the City of Knoxville, and Town of Farragut are are in the process of updating the 5-year Multi-Jurisdictional Local Hazard Mitigation Plan to better protect the people and property of our communities from the effects of natural hazard events and to obtain eligibility for mitigation funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). For more information on how we will respond to natural disasters locally visit: https://knoxcounty.org/stormwater/fema_mitigation.php
Knox County Stormwater is partnering with local artist, Jillian Hirsch, for the installation of a mosaic mural to be located at Karns Senior Center, adjacent to the Knox County SportsPark. The mural is designed to depict beautiful blue water and native plants winding through the landscape to show how streams provide a place for us to play, reflect and enjoy nature.

Come learn more at our information meeting, February 15th, 2018 from 4 – 6pm at the Karns Senior Center, located at 8042 Oak Ridge Hwy, Knoxville, TN  37931.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Adopt it!
The Adopt-A-Stream Program helps community groups, families, clubs, businesses, and organizations throughout our region to identify streams that are being taken over by trash and organize two clean-ups per year. We provide all the supplies (trash bags, gloves, grabbers, etc.), training, and safety information. We will even come help out and dispose of all your trash!
This past November, Elavon Inc. continued their participation in the Adopt-A-Stream program and cleaned up approximately 1,000 lbs of trash from behind their offices, preventing it from entering our waterways!

We also offer additional opportunities for groups to improve streams through tree planting, invasive species removal, and education outreach events.
If you’re interested in adopting a stream in your area, email adoptastream@knoxcounty.org or visit our website by clicking here
Meadow Creek Tree Planting: Knox County received grant funds from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to improve the vegetation along Meadow Creek, near the FC Alliance Soccer Park. The grant funds will support the purchase of native trees to improve the habitat and pollutant removal functions of the buffer. Join Knox County in improving this natural feature by planting native trees along the creek (address: 2801 Ball Camp-Byington Road, Knoxville, 37931) on Saturday, February 24, 2018 from 10 am to 11 am, in collaboration with 250K Tree Day! Knox County participates in the National Flood Insurance Program's Community Rating System (CRS) Program. This means that residents of Knox County enjoy a discount on flood insurance rates.  To learn more, visit here or contact Eddy Roberts at Eddy.Roberts@knoxcounty.org
In collaboration with the East Tennessee Community Design Center (ETCDC) and Keep Knoxville Beautiful, Knox County Stormwater has commissioned a concept design for the County's Engineering & Public Works complex off of Baxter Ave. This design highlights stormwater management techniques that bring nature back into the landscape, like rain gardens, bioswales, green roofs, and tree wells. All of these methods are not only beneficial for managing stormwater as Mother Nature intended, but they also help to make a happier and healthier campus for EPW employees.
