Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) Updates
Knox County Stormwater has been busy since the start of our fiscal year in July. We have responded to 131 different drainage issues from road, yard, and home flooding. We experienced an approximate 50-year storm event on August 12, 2017 that resulted in numerous flooded areas. Several of these issues get referred to our Environmental Stewardship Program to help solve them with green approaches.

The ESP Storyboard
The new Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) Storymap walks the public through the steps of designing and implementing green solutions to address drainage and erosion issues on private property. The Storyboard includes images and examples of projects from start to finish. Solutions include permeable pavers, a rain garden, and a streambank restoration project. Finally, there is a map to see the extent of the ESP program across the county – over 200 projects have been completed since the start of the Environmental Stewardship Program in 2000!

Knox County Stormwater is partnering with local artist, Jillian Hirsch, for the installation of a mosaic mural to be located at Karns Senior Center, adjacent to the Knox County SportsPark. The mural is designed to depict beautiful blue water and native plants winding through the landscape to show how streams provide a place for us to play, reflect and enjoy nature.
Come learn more at our information meeting, February 15th, 2018 from 4 – 6pm at the Karns Senior Center, located at 8042 Oak Ridge Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37931.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Adopt it!
The Adopt-A-Stream Program helps community groups, families, clubs, businesses, and organizations throughout our region to identify streams that are being taken over by trash and organize two clean-ups per year. We provide all the supplies (trash bags, gloves, grabbers, etc.), training, and safety information. We will even come help out and dispose of all your trash!
|
|
This past November, Elavon Inc. continued their participation in the Adopt-A-Stream program and cleaned up approximately 1,000 lbs of trash from behind their offices, preventing it from entering our waterways!
We also offer additional opportunities for groups to improve streams through tree planting, invasive species removal, and education outreach events.
If you’re interested in adopting a stream in your area, email adoptastream@knoxcounty.org or visit our website by clicking here.
