City Council Update

Roundup from the Dec. 11 Regular City Council Meeting: Council members were appointed to the Council’s Legislative Committee and three new ad hoc council committees. City Council approved ordinance O-2017-17 and set the public hearing and second reading date for Jan. 8, 2018. The ordinance would authorize the purchase of nearly 60 acres of the Taylor property located on the east side of Wadsworth Boulevard between Morrison Road and Yale Avenue. The land would be preserved as a passive use open space park. A public hearing was set for Jan. 22, 2018 for two ordinances that would amend multiple sections of the Municipal Code, covering a variety of topics including crime and penalty sections.

Due to the holidays, the next Regular City Council Meeting will be at 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 8, 2018.

News & Events

A thrifty partnership
Modern life somehow seems to require the constant collection of one thing: clutter. But a unique collaboration that the City of Lakewood has established with Lakewood-based nonprofit Arc Thrift provides residents with the opportunity to declutter their homes while helping fund services for residents throughout Jefferson County who are disabled. Now in its fifth year, the City’s Cleanup Day has been a resounding success. This year, more than 1,000 vehicles dropped off in one day more than 200,000 pounds of unwanted appliances, furniture and other material in October. Read about it at Lakewood.org/GoodStories.

Lakewood hiring part-time seasonal positions
Part-time seasonal positions with the City of Lakewood provide a unique opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience. Attend Lakewood's job fair from 1-5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12 at the Lakewood Link Recreation Center to apply and interview. View open positions at Lakewood.org/RecEvents.

‘Spotlight’ on Sister Cities
Mayor Adam Paul talks with the Australian students participating in the Lakewood Sister Cities Student Exchange program, and the Green Mountain High School students hosting them on the latest edition of "Spotlight on Lakewood." Watch the video at Lakewood.org/Spotlight.

Deadline for poster contest
Lakewood is getting ready for its Earth Day Celebration in April 2018, and the Earth Day Committee is looking for talented artists to create a design that reflects the spirit of Earth Day. The winning design will be used on posters, banners, T-shirts and other materials, and the artist will receive $200. The deadline to apply is Dec. 30, so submit your design at Lakewood.org/EarthDay.

Apply to serve on pension board
The City of Lakewood Employees Money Purchase Pension Plan Retirement Board will have an opening for a resident to serve a four-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2018, and ending Dec. 31, 2021. The board makes decisions about the administration of the pension plan; establishes rules, regulations and policies; and oversees other board responsibilities. Applicants must be a registered voter in Lakewood, and the deadline to apply is Dec. 31. Apply online at Lakewood.org/GetonBoard

Free shirt better than ugly holiday sweater
Runners for the Colfax Marathon events can pick up a fun casual and comfy shirt from their local Runners Roost if they register by Dec. 29. Remember, you can participate in a marathon, a relay, a half marathon or a 10-miler at the May event. Details at RunColfax.org.

Sign up for Teen Court

Lakewood’s Teen Court is looking for new volunteers to participate for this upcoming school semester. Teen Court is an educational tool for youth that enables them to actively participate in the justice system by acting as defense attorneys, prosecutors, bailiffs and jury members. This is an opportunity for students to participate in actual cases with real sentences from the teen jury for the juvenile offender. The program builds confidence in public speaking and other skills and is available to those ages 13-18. For more information, contact Rachel Starry with Lakewood’s Probation Division at 303-987-7413 or racsta@lakewoodco.org.

Nighttime construction
The City will allow construction to occur at nighttime for the following project:
  • Installation of new signs on signal mast arms and sealing concrete pavement on Wadsworth Boulevard from 10th Avenue to Highland Drive. The work is scheduled to occur between Dec. 13 and Dec. 15. The work will require lane closures.
