It’s that time of year again where we at Edupeg would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support in 2017. Please find, below, our closing dates for 2017 and opening dates for 2018 as well as some recent highlights.

The end of 2017 has come along far too quickly! It has been a remarkably successful year for Edupeg. We are very proud of what we have achieved this year. We fostered incredible relationships with our 49 schools and the 272 teachers we supported. Through our weekly classroom visits we are gradually impacting upon the culture of the schools we support. Our project has proven that with these weekly visits, and making our mentors part of the fabric of the schools we work in, we are starting to see dramatic changes in our schools.

Edupeg underwent an independent evaluation funded by Standard Bank in 2016 conducted by the Centre for Social Development in Africa at the University of Johannesburg. This is an extract from the Executive Summary of the final report. “The results led us to conclude that despite the short time between the implementation of the revamped in-class mentor support and the evaluation, positive results were being observed in schools. Overall, the activities undertaken by Edupeg are progressively meeting the programme outcomes and consistent reports from mentors, principals and educators revealed that the classroom management techniques are assisting in learner discipline. Similarly, educators under mentorship were described as more knowledgeable since being part of the programme and as better able to plan for lessons. Educators themselves described instances of how they used Edupeg techniques to effectively manage learners in their classrooms. This ability to manage classrooms and improve delivery of CAPS is evidenced by the significant increases in learner marks between Terms 1 and 4 for both Mathematics and English (First Additional Language) in both Foundation and Intermediate Phases.” (Page 5)

In November, Volkswagen hosted their third annual Literacy Conference. In attendance was the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, the Executive Mayor of Port Elizabeth, Athol Trollip, and esteemed education experts such as Nic Spaull and Prof Jonathan Jansen. Rhodes University presented the findings of their recent evaluation at the KwaNobuhle schools that our mentors Bill and Avryl work in. The Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) was used by the evaluators to test the literacy levels of Grade 3 learners in five schools. There was a marked improvement in the results of learners at the schools we support and Edupeg’s role in improving the results in these schools was highlighted in the presentation.

In order to recognise and reward our teachers for their participation in the project, all Edupeg mentors were tasked with organising prize-givings at their various schools. Some of the schools requested that we join their official school prize-givings. We awarded certificates to all teachers who participated in our mentorship programme. An impressive 172 teachers achieved SACE accreditation for reaching the set requirements, and 114 received accreditation for taking part in the Teach Like A Champion workshops. They were all joyous occasions celebrating our partnership and all that has been achieved throughout the year. A big shout out to Nashua for sponsoring 449 certificates!

Twenty-two of our teachers attended a two day Creative Classrooms workshop which was held in October. Teachers were trained to incorporate and increase creativity into their teaching practice by providing practical and applicable creative teaching techniques, with the aim of reinvigorating teachers and deepening their impact on learners. We will be incorporating many of these techniques into our workshops to make them more inspiring for our audiences. Immense gratitude to the sponsors, Truworths and Tsogo Sun, for making these two days possible and all the behind-the-scenes coordination from the partners involved, PYE Global and Earthchild. Edupeg mentee wins district level teaching award
