A High Energy Outlook for 2018

We always relish the opportunity to work on an Economist Summit event as it helps us hone our sector insights.

The Energy Summit’s title, ‘The Age of Abundance’ signposted a focus on an increasingly innovative and environmentally-conscious industry for the 28 November event.

Of course it wouldn’t do to have favourites, but a notable contributor was Stanford University’s Mark Jacobson, whose recently published Roadmap in collaboration with the Solutions Project, outlines the effects of a transition to 100% renewable energy in 139 countries worldwide by 2050. Some encouraging predictions include:

  • Net job creation of 24 million
  • Reduced energy consumption of over 40%
  • 4-7 million lives saved that are otherwise lost from air pollution each year
  • Energy stability
  • Reduced terrorism and catastrophic risk

Digital Triage for GPs

DoctorLink, our digital healthcare client focused on improving NHS primary healthcare delivery, announced its triage and advice tool in September, one week ahead of its official launch at the annual NHS Expo.

Coverage from TechCrunch, a ‘number one healthtech startup to watch’ rating from TechWorld and presence in CityAM, Practice Business and Digital Health News has helped achieve cut-through in a busy news and competitor sector.

Food & Innovation
(It must be Frankfurt)

Tackling health from a different angle, we supported the Olam Cocoa team launch of an innovative new cocoa ingredient without added sodium at Food Ingredients Europe, the largest industry event in the sector.

An added sweetener for the media was the launch of deZaan's latest Cocoa Manual, the definitive text on cocoa production and processing, first published in 1969.

Chosen Charity Check In

Holy’s Home for Children, a charity based in Ghana founded by Gonger, James Deacon is building a financially self-sustaining orphanage through the distribution and sale of clean, safe drinking water for nearby towns and villages.

Over the course of 2017 the Gong team raised over £4,000 and supported employment for 15 people in the rural town of Kwahu Nteso, approximately 4 hours from Accra. From mere foundations a year ago, the two-storey building is well on its way for opening in Easter 2018 with its own source of water from a new on-site bore hole. Go James!

Social Capital for Breakfast

The moveable feast that was the election and inauguration of President Kenyatta presented a few logistical challenges for the team in Nairobi, but the second in a series of three events on "Capital" - this time on Social Capital  - eventually went ahead as planned.

Insights from the Africa team at LinkedIn helped ensure that the content was tailored to an East African perspective. The main take-away was take time to understand your audience and slice and dice content to make it as relevant as possible to earn attention.

New Names, New Faces

Client side, we celebrated our first direct engagement by the IFC’s PPP team to support on a water-related project in Africa, and welcomed new briefs from old clients, ContinentalRe and Garden City.

The team grew with the appointment Financial Director, Joanne Cotterell who brings a wealth of PR agency experience and international savvy. At the Christmas retreat, she revealed her true colours as a knockout vocalist with a stunning Etta James number. Jo is working across the UK and Kenya to streamline our commercial processes while still finding time to fit in the odd festival performance.

We also rolled out the bunting to welcome Camille Merrells, our newest Senior Account Executive. Camille was lured by the mix of clients, international focus and the breadth of sector from private equity to philanthropy.

We are looking forward to…

Our ‘Inclusive Culture Eats Strategy’ at breakfast on Jan 30th where Lloyd’s Head of D&I Pauline Miller is sharing insights from her work in the specialty insurance sector as it strives to embed an inclusive culture in support of a global talent and innovation strategy.

As well as supporting The END Fund team in preparation for Davos where they will champion their innovative brand of activist philanthropy against a back-drop theme “Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World” making a case for renewed commitment to international collaboration as a way of solving critical global challenges.
