From Indianapolis to San Bruno & back again. West Coast Conference Commish Holzman is headed east to rejoin the leadership ranks at the NCAA as VP of Women's Basketball. NCAA SVP of Basketball Gavitt: "Lynn Holzman brings the requisite balance of skill and experience in both managing championships and coordinating the administration of the committees governing the sport. Her excellent work as commissioner of the West Coast Conference and previously as a director at the NCAA has prepared Lynn well for the various responsibilities of the job, and as a former scholarship basketball student‐athlete, she will be an inspiring leader for NCAA women’s basketball." Holzman point to her time as a WBB student-athlete as transformational, looking forward to giving back to the game, "Women’s basketball is thriving and positioned to continue its growth and advance as a premier NCAA sport." Holzman to begin her new role on February 1. (link)
Louisville Interim Prez Postel will create a 10-member committee to help hire a new, permanent AD. No word yet if Interim boss Tyra wants the job. Why now, without clarity on who will lead the university? Postel: "We could ask that same question about any of the searches we have conducted (for other jobs) ... the life of the university goes on & we need good people." (link); Of note in a new Bloomberg piece about the Cards, Postel says, "I love sports, but athletics is overemphasized. This is a university, not a sports complex." Otherwise, the Bloomberg piece covers the same general ground as 85 others before it. (link)
Cal Chancellor Christ dives into Golden Bears athletics as San Jose Mercury News headliner Wilner pulls out a number of goodies. Christ clarifies that 54%, or $9.5M per year, of the Memorial Stadium debt load will be transferred to the university's books, a massive sigh of relief for whomever becomes the next AD in Berkeley. However, Christ still harps on the need to identify & execute a sustainable model, "First, we need clarity about finances. We don’t have clarity. Then we need much more imaginative and detailed plan about revenue generation. Then we need much more of a philanthropic plan and a sense of philanthropic capacity." Collegiate Sports Associates will not be the search firm of record for the AD process & we'll learn "in the next week or so" who will assist on the hire. Christ says she's looking for a leader who: 1) Is a really good communicator; 2) Can make tough decisions & stand by them; and, 3) "You have to understand the noise (of Berkeley) & embrace it." More. (link); More, also, in that Christ offered a critique of the Pac-12's leadership & direction. Not a big fan of variable FB kick times as dictated by TV & more specifically the Pac-12 Networks. Questions a focus on linear TV revenues given where we may be headed in the future. Admits, "I'm fairly critical of the Pac-12 organization. Like many central organizations — you could think about the office of the president here as an analogy, and it’s just human nature — you tend to elaborate your own organization rather than understanding that it should be as small and efficient as possible for the benefit of the members." Christ is the second league CEO to voice concerns about the league after Washington State Prez Schulz did so a month ago. More. (link)
Arizona State AD Anderson reportedly called new Tennessee boss Fulmer "a pariah" in an interview with CBSSports.com's Dodd on the topic of this year's HC carousel. Full quote: "The athletic department there is perceived there as a cluster. Their athletic director, now Phil Fulmer, in the athletic director's world is a pariah. It is not a good situation." Anderson's comments were in reaction to those around the landscape questioning his hire of new Sun Devils FB HC Edwards, "The local reaction -- was the consensus opinion that I made a good decision? Absolutely not. Was it nationally? No. […] I knew I had to change the model or I was wasting my time at Arizona State." (link)
More new deal terms for Texas Tech AD Hocutt aren't quite clear yet, but it looks like he's getting another commitment by the university to stick in Lubbock. Prez Schovanec points to Hocutt's national profile as chair of the CFP, "But beyond that, what I appreciate even more is what he does for our athletic programs and for this university. As opportunities would come forward, for him, I felt it was important for us to send a message as to how much we value what he does." Said "opportunities" have never been mentioned by Hocutt to Schovanec, but the university boss adds, "I see that as a very encouraging sign for the future of Texas Tech athletics, for his commitment to these programs, and we’re very fortunate to have someone of his character and skills as athletic director." Also of note, the Red Raiders are no longer relying on any institutional support to balance its budget. (link, link)
More tax package discussion, this time at Nebraska where Asst. AD for Communications Mann provides, "We are committed to ensuring that our fans value the opportunity and experience of being at games, and will continue to do so regardless of any possible financial changes. Attending and supporting Nebraska athletic events helps provide so much more than just supporting our teams. In the current fiscal year alone, Nebraska Athletics has committed to provide $10 million of athletics generated resources to campus, including $5 million to fund scholarships for non-student-athletes attending Nebraska." If new FB HC Frost's deal gets taxed under the new guidelines, the $1M needed to cover the 20% hit would come from operating revenues. The state of Nebraska features an all-Republican congressional delegation, all of whom support the changes that could pinch college athletics. (link)
Disney-21st Century Fox: Arguably the most important thing we learned as part of the $52.4B deal is that there's no plan for Fox's RSN programming to head to ESPN Plus. Disney boss Iger: "On the sports side, I think you have to look at the regional sports networks as a compliment to ESPN, not an overlap in the sense that, like a television network has television affiliates, where a network is a national programmer and the affiliates are local, the same thing is the case here, where ESPN has essentially a national program footprint and the RSNs are more local in nature, and they'll be able to complement one another. There'll be a sharing of product, so that we can infuse ESPN national with some more local content and infuse the local regional sports networks with more national content and the result of both will be better for the consumer than it is today – than they are today." Full CNBC transcript here. (link); The Big Ten Network is sticking with Fox. Well, the new Fox. (link); Iger's base pay bumps to $3M in 2018, $3.5M when the deal closes, plus an annual $20M annual incentive, $25M grant award & potential nine digits in stock. (link); Fox boss Murdoch: "Are we retreating? Absolutely not. We are pivoting at a pivotal moment." (link); "David Stern says ESPN will have to pay the NBA more in rights if it wants to broadcast RSN games on its OTT service." (link); More from key investor & thought-leader Jackson on five misperceptions of the mega-deal, including the super important fact: Most cord-cutters are still paying for sports via MVPDs at a rate not too dissimilar from monthly linear carriage costs. Newly hired Houston AD Pezman gets a three-year deal at a base of $375K annually. Incentives could take overall yearly earnings to $525K & UH Prez Khator can add a year to the agreement after Pezman completes his first 12 months on the job. Participation in a New Year's Six bowl game is worth $50K, a 10% increase in APR & all sports above 975 equals $25K, every FB sellout means $10K. Lastly, "If UH terminates the contract without cause, Pezman will receive one-half of the base salary for the remainder of the contract, and only the difference in salary if Pezman takes another job. If Pezman leaves he will owe the base salary remaining on the contract." (link)
The All-American's Ubben explains "The challenge facing the Group of 5 conferences," as twice in the College Football Playoff's first four years a 'Group of 5' squad has gone undefeated, but not cracked the CFP Committee's final Top 10. Ubben contends that in order for a G5 team to make the playoffs, these three factors must fall into place: 1. Play a tough non-conference schedule; 2. Precede your breakthrough year with a breakout year; and, 3. Hope for a big year from your conference. Lots more here, including comments from UCF AD White, AAC Commish Aresco and his MAC counterpart, Steinbrecher. (link)
Georgia recently changed its violations policy to where "the former stipulation that any arrest regardless of the outcome in court automatically counted as a violation of the Substance Abuse Policy" is no longer in place. Instead, UGA now has Level 1 violations - "defined as possession, use, or facilitating the possession/use of alcohol." and Level 2 violations - "Includes, but is not limited to, any violation involving the operation of a motor vehicle after consumption of alcohol and/or the use of drugs, acts of violence while using alcohol or drugs, destruction of property, disorderly conduct, or intoxication level that requires medical treatment or results in medical being called, even if treatment is refused, and any drug violation." Any violations of Level 2 are considered violations of the SAP. Punishments detailed for first, second and third offenses. (link)
Stand-out Ole Miss FB student-athlete Patterson is heading 775 miles north to Michigan & now has notable attorney Mars in his corner. Mars, who represented former Rebels HC Nutt in his push back against the university & as you would expect, says there's no reason Patterson shouldn't be granted a waiver to suit up for the Wolverines next season. However, there is till an NCAA process to complete. Mars: "It’s safe to say that the drafters of the NCAA rule could not possibly have foreseen or ever imagined what occurred during the Ole Miss investigation. Since there are no prior similar cases for the staff to rely on as precedent, the staff will have to make its decision on a clean slate." (link)
In an interview with the AP, Florida State Prez Thrasher opened up about the departure of former FB HC Fisher and his criticism that the Seminoles need upgraded facilities, as well as the hiring of new FB HC Taggart. Thrasher: “My view of Jimbo was he wanted to model things after Nick Saban and the SEC and Alabama. I'm OK with that to a point but I'm also not going to put Florida State at risk in terms of debt and the responsibility to other programs. Him and I had an understanding about that. ... Our facilities are pretty good right now. They're not bad at all and Willie Taggart will tell you he wants to get kids to come here not because of the facilities but because of the education they're going to get and leadership on the field.” (link)
More HC & Personnel Notes: Washington State Prez Schulz responds to fans concerns via Twitter: "We are working on all of these things - we have or will go to 4 bowl games in 5 years - which is pretty sustainable IMO.  If we want to move from having the smallest budget in Power 5 - we need our fans to support the program - regardless of who is AD, President, or Head Coach." (link); Colorado State extends FB HC Bobo through 2022, comes with a bump to a $1.85M base salary with annual $100K increases. (link); Charlotte parts ways with MBB HC Price nine games into his third season. The 49ers owe him the balance of his original five-year, $500K/year contract. AC Fancher will serve as interim HC. (link); Former IUPUI AC Botham hired at IPFW to lead the Women's Track & Field team. (link); Iowa and Baseball HC Heller have agreed to an extension through 2024. (link); Fox Sports' Feldman: "With the addition of a 10th assistant to college football staffs coming next month, I've been hearing that likely will lead to some coordinator movement as well as a few FCS head coaches possibly moving up to FBS staffs." (link); Reports indicate Air Force Men's LAX HC Seremet is still suspended, as are a number of upperclassmen as the Academy continues to work through an internal investigation. (link)

Net Neutrality: Is here. (link); Of key note from The Athletic's Vannini, "A Net Neutrality tie-in for sports, if you’ve cut cable to solely watch sports via streaming apps, that could get a lot more expensive." (link); A number of states are suing the FCC as a result. (link); Arkansas professor Dittmore penned for AthleticDirectorU on what the changes could mean for college athletics. USA Today's Schrotenboer comes with the data on pay for bowl executive directors from 2015. Top 5: Cotton's Baker ($1.2M), Outback's McVay ($993K), Sugar's Hoolahan ($794K), Peach's Stokan ($684K), Orange's Poms ($655K). Seven more above $375K. A fair portion of the compensation in question includes bonus cash. Football Bowl Association Executive Director Waters: "Everything has grown." Comparisons are made to ADs, FB HCs & other non-profit chiefs. College Athletes Players Association boss Huma is highly critical. (link)
Georgia Tech unveils its Everyday Champions blueprint, consisting of three "pillars that will guide its student-athletes in their journey to differentiate themselves and succeed in all aspects of life." 1. Winning - Competing for championships at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics in the Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA Division I; 2. The Institute - Excelling in one of the most rigorous and rewarding academic institutions in the world; and, 3. Total Person Program -  Pursuing Dr. Homer Rice's model of excellence and personal well-being in all aspects of life. "Georgia Tech expects to produce EVERYDAY CHAMPIONS that not only achieve extraordinary things as a student-athlete but are market-ready professionals poised to become the latest in a long line of Georgia Tech student-athletes to produce extraordinary results after they get out." (link)
Western Kentucky AD Stewart reportedly called the MBB team’s defeat at Wisconsin on Wednesday a "disgrace" because of the foul call that was made at the end of the game & led to the Badgers winning on the free throw line. Stewart: "You want the game to be settled on the court. I think to have a foul called 90 feet from the basket with two seconds left? That’d be the equivalent to me of calling pass interference on a Hail Mary, but calling it on a receiver that the ball wasn’t even thrown to." Hilltoppers HC Stansbury also weighed in: "I’m gonna say this as nice as I can: I’m not gonna put the blame on one play. But as it turned out, it was an important play. It’s really an obvious play. If he's out of bounds, he’s an illegal screener. ... We’re supposed to go the monitor the last two minutes to look at things? To me, that’s an important thing to go to the monitor for. They said you couldn’t go. What else is more important to go to the monitor for late in the game?" (link); Here's a pic of the call. (link)
Former Vol For Life Coordinator Davis, who departed from his position at Tennessee in October by submitting his resignation letter to then-AD Currie, says former FB HC Jones' wife spread rumors that Davis was fired. Davis sent Currie his resignation letter on Oct. 30 and on Nov. 2 sent an email to Executive Assoc. AD Sigmon: "I want you to know that I have been contacted by three different people that have stated that Barb Jones, Butch’s wife, has told some parent(s) of our current-student athletes that I was fired because I was leaking information to the media. This is absolutely untrue and it is exactly the type of thing I feared would happen. ... I have not made any statements or comments concerning my decision to resign. However, if needed, I can make a public statement concerning this matter and the circumstances surrounding it in order to protect my character and my name. Also note that if this continues, I will not hesitate to seek legal counsel so as to make sure my name is not slandered." (link)
Former Auburn Track AC Ghioroaie, who is now an AC at Toledo, has amended his federal discrimination lawsuit against the school and AC Rolle, adding a charge of negligence against HC Spry and demands for a jury trial. Ghioroaie is seeking compensatory damages from the university on three discrimination charges; retaliation, compensatory and punitive damages from Rolle on charges of assault and battery; and compensatory and punitive damages from Spry, who is accused of “negligent training and supervision.” More. (link)
