End Your Year by Supporting Youth like Mohamed

In 2009, Mohamed Camara, his mother, and his siblings fled the social and political unrest in Guinea, ending up in the South Bronx. Mohamed was 13 years old. Today, he is an honor roll student at Sarah Lawrence College, a two time leading scorer, a leadership award recipient, and a political science major.

"Throughout high school, and even now in college, my coaches and mentors at South Bronx United have always been there for me. I remember my academic advisor staying up late at night giving me feedback on my college essay. Being a first generation college student, this was cornerstone to my college admission: my counselors at school were too busy to give me the individual attention that I needed; and my parents were not acquainted with the intricacies of the college application process to be helpful to me. Volunteer opportunities, youth summits, and referee jobs that SBU allowed me to participate in at a young age, have made me the confident and self-motivated person that I am today."

Mohamed was recognized in November as the 2017 SBU Annual Benefit Youth Honoree. He plans to graduate in 2019, hoping to attend law school and one day work at the United Nations. Watch his story in SBU's Youth Impact Video.
