(Read) Experts’ Roundtable: Telling The Story Of A New Head Football Coach
Straight from USA Today's Berkowitz: "Tax plan coming out of House-Senate conference committee still includes excise tax colleges would face on compensation in excess of $1 million for any of their five most highly paid employees. But tax rate now would be 21%, per conference committee explanatory statement. Excise tax that colleges face on high compensation also will apply to certain 'parachute payments,' such as buyouts to coaches, depending on the amount, per conference committee statement. Tax plan coming out of House-Senate conference committee includes repeal of 80% deduction that has been allowed for donations to college sports programs connected to rights to buy game tickets." (link)
Like many, if not all of you, Kentucky has been in communication with its donor base about the potential tax changes. Wildcats AD Barnhart sent a letter to all K Fund members with info on the developments, notes the option of making a "prepayment on your endowment, scholarship or pledges attached to tickets" before the end of the month to ensure tax deductions. K Fund's structure is tied to MBB & FB tix at Rupp Arena & Kroger Field, respectively. (link)
It is indeed another new deal for Texas Tech boss Hocutt as he inks an eight-year pact worth $11.3M that could keep him in Lubbock through 2025 (is that $1.41M per year?). Retroactive to September 1 & the $11.3M stack does not include bonus money potential. It's the third extension for Hocutt since arriving to lead the Red Raiders in September if 2011 after a two-plus year run at Miami (FL). (link)
Minnesota AD Coyle covers some good ground with KSTP's Wolfson during a 20-minute conversation. Of note, says stability is something that keeps him up at night, more specifically pointing to a handful of different ADs for the Gophers over the last couple of years, plus three FB HCs for the last three seasons & another nine senior administrators exiting since 2012. "What I worry about is establishing that longterm vision that people want to be a part of and letting them know we want to be here for a long time and do things the right way." More. (link)
Ole Miss has added the legal services of Butler Snow, as well as the Barrett Law Group in its appeals process with the NCAA. Bond, Schoeneck & King, plus Lightfoot, Franklin & White have also been engaged with the Rebels. Chancellor Vitter: "We have the best legal team in the country to handle our NCAA appeal. We added Mississippi-based firms to further strengthen an already exceptional team so that we are in the best possible position to win this appeal. We believe the additional penalties imposed by the COI are unwarranted, which we will make very clear at the appropriate time in our written submissions on the merits of our appeal." (link)
Mountain West leaders met this past week in Phoenix & one item discussed was the league's bowl tie-ins. More directly from Deputy Commish Gilliland: "We had a very robust discussion about future direction in terms of our bowl lineup." Gilliland added that the conference is always looking for opportunities to advance its programs, though the geography of member institutions & bowl locales sometimes makes for limited options. Gilliland also pointed to the changing media landscape as one variable that could impact the bowl landscape in years to come. (link)
The NCAA hit Northern Colorado MBB with three years of probation, a one-year postseason ban (part of self-imposed penalties), scholarship & recruiting reductions, plus a vacation of records due to academic improprieties carried out by its former staff. Former HC Hill, his ACs, a GA & a former athletic trainer all completed coursework for prospective student-athletes. Hill himself receives a six-year show-cause. Three- & four-year show causes for others involved. (link); Hill takes full responsibility for the missteps, "Regret doesn't begin to describe the feelings I have on the negative consequences that the violations have had on the university, particularly the past and current players and coaches." (link)
With college FB TV ratings down a touch, Awful Announcing's Duffy believes the fix is making sure premier match-ups don't overlap with one another & implementing an across-the-board flex scheduling mechanic for late-season opportunities. The move to more conference tilts could also help viewership, but Duffy's thesis is the lack of coordination between league's that's "sub-optimal" for ratings points. (link); Speaking of scheduling, the Washington Post's Svrluga takes aim at Georgetown MBB's slate to date as the Hoyas are projected to have the worst non-conference schedule for any program since KenPom started crunching the metric in 2002. GU HC Ewing sees it this way, "Everyone is getting confidence. Everyone is working hard and getting better, getting ready for the Big East." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Charlotte MBB HC Price's departure from the 49ers this week prompts ESPN's Goodman to take a deeper look at the success of NBA-connected individuals who have coached in the collegiate ranks around the nation in the past decade. Lists Iowa State's Hoiberg, Buffalo/Arizona State's Hurley, Alabama's Johnson, Utah's Krystkowiak, Grand Canyon's Majerle, Nevada's Musselman, UC Irvine's Turner and Valparaiso/Vanderbilt's Drew as "successes," while Penn's Allen, Loyola Marymount's Bayno, Wake Forest's Bzdelik, USC's O'Neill, Charlotte's Price, and others as those who haven't thrived at the professional level. Lots other analyzed. Colorado State's new on-campus FB stadium generated millions more than expected in its first year of operation, AD Parker, "We will operate with a significant surplus this year on what’s required for debt service ($7.63M in 2017)." Season tix were up from 11,046 to 15,477, plus 1K more who invested in three-game mini plans. Student attendance also rose from 6,494 to 7,455. The facility also hosted 130 outside events that brought in additional revenues. A 2012 study estimated a first-year net of $6.35M to $11.32M. Final figures won't be available until May. Lots more on the first year of operation in Ft. Collins. (link)
The dynamic between FB & academics at Rice is explored in this Houston Chronicle piece as former student-athletes recall inflexibility by professors & the difficulty assimilating into the overall student population. Former FB HC Bailiff noted for working to connect both sides of campus. Wake Forest AD Wellman provides perspective for other small private FBS members, "I feel like our fans are just as passionate as any other fan base. The challenge is we don't have as many of them. […] The athletic director is the one who's closer to the program than anyone else and is best to make the decision whether that coach is the right one to realize the potential of that particular program. And I think it's important to determine what that potential is and how to live up to that potential." More. (link)
Eastern Michigan gets the green light on a new $20M sports med & student-athlete training facility to sit at the northwest corner of Rynearson Stadium. Eagles AD Wetherbee: "We are a piece of a larger University campaign that will forever transform EMU. This new sports medicine and performance training facility will consolidate department infrastructure and help provide a safe, effective environment with the highest levels of care for our students while helping EMU more closely align with its peers in the Mid-American Conference and throughout the region." No completion timeline set yet. (link)
The absence of Detroit MBB HC Alexander was reportedly in connection to a vulgar comment & action toward a Titans student-athlete during an early-November practice. In a text message to the mother of the student-athlete in question, Alexander, "As a parent I can totally respect your anger with me and I guarantee that won’t happen again with ANY of my players…I will not coach in the coming game(s) moving forward to hold myself accountable for the standards that our AD and Campus Administration has for all of us in the department and university as a whole…Again I’m sincerely (sic) apologize to you and your family as this is not a joking matter no matter what the intentions were." The student-athlete's parents are still questioning the decision to allow Alexander to return to the team. (link)
Here comes the impact of the 10th FB AC: Sports Illustrated's Feldman reports, "#UTSA DC Pete Golding is being hired by #Alabama as an assistant coach. As of Jan. 9, he'll be the Tide 10th assistant. No designation at this point on what his role will be." Further, FootballScoop pointed to Ohio State going after fast-rising Washington State DC Grinch, who is making $600K this season. "Sources indicated Grinch would not replace an active Ohio State assistant; rather, he would serve as the Buckeyes’ 10th assistant, which will become effective for all FBS programs on Jan. 9. (linklink)
More HC & Personnel Notes: Former Arizona State OC Napier heads to Louisiana-Lafayette as the Ragin' Cajuns' next FB HC, gets a 5-year deal with max first-year compensation of $1.47M if bonuses are reached. Also has a $2M AC salary pool. (link, link); Billionaire and mega Texas donor McCombs says he is trying to get former Baylor FB HC Briles the same job at Incarnate Word. (link); Toledo FB HC Candle signs a six-year deal that takes him through 2023 at $1M+ annually, making him the highest-paid coach in the MAC. (link); Eastern Michigan Baseball HC Van Ameyde resigned his position this week to return to Michigan State as the pitching coach. (link); Tulane looks to be finalizing a multi-year extension for FB HC Fritz. (link)

Twitter is still toying with the idea of obtaining rights to the last few minutes of games & implementing micropayments to drive revenues when the contests are super close or involve special circumstances. Global Head of Sports Partnerships Froelich: "It’s something that we talk about a lot because Twitter really is the ideal platform for something like that. I can’t necessarily say that it’s something that you’ll see soon, but it’s certainly something that makes all the sense in the world for Twitter." (link

James Madison FB's 25-game winning streak shoots for a 26th today as the Dukes host South Dakota State in a FCS semi in Harrisonburg. HC Houston & other team members don't talk about the streak. Houston: "We never talk about it. We never talk about the streak. We never talk about any of that." AD Bourne on the national positioning of the JMU program, "You want to be an institution that has national acclaim, a very strong academic record, an institution that people will support. And right now, our fans are supporting us winning national championships in football.  I would be a little reluctant to get into a situation where we went to an FBS league and we ended up competing in the middle of that league. I’m not sure that’s really healthy for us right now. We’d much prefer to make sure that whatever the future would hold for us — if we were to move or do something different from what we’re doing now — that we’re walking into an environment where we can compete at the very top." (link)
The Douglas County D.A. Office with an update on its investigation into the alleged rape in the MBB dorm at Kansas a year ago: "After an exhaustive review of all available reports, evidence and witness statements, the District Attorney’s office has determined there is not sufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt a sexual assault occurred. Furthermore, no suspect for an alleged sexual assault was developed through the investigation." Five MBB student-athletes were listed as witnesses in the police report, including former Jayhawk Bragg, who was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. BYU and Utah will meet tonight in a MBB matchup for the first time since December 2015, when the game ended with Cougars freshman Emery punching Utes senior Taylor at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City. That incident, of course, prompted Utah MBB HC Krystkowiak to call off the series, as he felt the rivalry had become too "toxic" and "unsafe." Krystkowiak on his decision: "To be honest with you, if [the texted apology] had happened a little bit earlier — this is no disrespect to him — we wouldn’t ever had taken any time off. I was waiting to see what would take place before I kind of got my undies in a bunch and wanted to put an end [to] it.." On what kind of reception he expects tonight at the Marriott Center in Provo: "It doesn’t really matter to me. I am sure it’s not going to be warm and fuzzy and flowers and chocolates, if that’s what you mean. But I don’t really care." Utah administrators say Krystkowiak is responsible for the $80K buyout from his decision. (link)
Under Armour signed an eight-year deal in 2013 to provide performance apparel, footwear and accessories to the USA Gymnastics team through the 2020 Summer Games, but will end its agreement early. Hershey's and Proctor & Gamble will also not renew their contracts that expire at the end of the year. All signs point to the recent sexual assault cases surrounding the sport as the reason behind the parting of ways. A statement from USA Gymnastics: "While USA Gymnastics entered into certain sponsorship agreements that have been fulfilled, we are now discussing renewal opportunities that will reflect our commitment to creating a culture of empowerment focused on athlete safety and other important initiatives. We value our longstanding partnerships with all of our corporate partners, and we look forward to working together with them to make a positive difference in our athletes' lives." (link)
Disney-21st Century Fox: Here's by far the best graphic/listing I've seen on how all the assets come together under the category headings of TV, Film, Direct to Consumer & Sports. (link); How might Comcast impact Hulu changes has part of the deal? Recode's Lee: 1) Comcast could press the FCC to block the deal; 2) Comcast prevents Disney from making major changes given its ownership stake; or, 3) Comcast simply stops selling content to Hulu. (link); Star Wars' The Last Jedi is expected to do $200M+ at the box office this weekend. Not too shabby. (link)
Also Noticed: Former Alabama AD & longtime industry leader Battle is leading the $15M fundraising effort for a new performing arts center on the Tuscaloosa campus. (link); Former Tennessee FB Director of Operations Spognardi pleads guilty to official misconduct on the handling of team expenses that were previously under his purview. $14K in restitution is part of the plea. (link); Central Arkansas gets a new endowed scholarship for a FB student-athlete with an Education major. (link); The location for the 2020 MAAC hoops tourneys are down to Bridgeport, Long Island, Atlantic City & Albany. (link); SEC Commish Sankey glad Arkansas will continue to play a FB game in Little Rock. Says it's a league tradition in the same ilk as the eagle flying at Auburn or the singing of "Rocky Top" at Tennessee. (link)
