Listen - Being A True Rights & Sponsorships Partner (Guest: Dan Migala)
Outgoing North Dakota AD Faison's approach to leadership is the focus of this Fighting Hawks Magazine piece. UND Deputy AD/SWA Irle reflects on the FB HC search the pair executed four years ago that stretched over the Christmas holiday, "He never asked me to cancel plans, I just knew he was going to cancel his Christmas, essentially, in order to complete the search. I just laugh. We’re literally putting mallows on the sweet potatoes and we’re talking about rental cars and wondering if they’ll be open." "Commitment" is how Faison is repeatedly described & Irle says North Dakota's transition from DII to DI is a specific example of Faison establishing the right department structure to be successful at the enhanced level of competition, "If we don’t excel coming out of the transition, we will take another 10 or 15 years to become relevant again." Interestingly Faison compares the passion of the Fighting Hawks' fanbase to that of Louisville MBB as former UND Prez Kelley points to Faison as "calm and steady." A bit more. (link)
Penn State AD Barbour on the new FB leadership structure established by Arizona State AD Anderson, "I’ve read a little bit about what Ray Anderson is doing and I don’t pretend to fully understand it but these things are particular to individual institutions and what fits you. I worked with Ray when I was in the Pac-12 and he’s a really bright guy with lots of ideas and there’s no doubt that folks will be watching to see actually what it is and how it works out, what kind of impact it does have." Washington FB HC Petersen & Penn State peer Franklin say they're both of the aware of the new Sun Devils' approach, but don't have a comment on its potential effectiveness. (link)
Ok, the title of this article ("How the Disney/Fox Deal Might Help UCF Get into the Big 12") may be a bit farfetched (or is it?), but check out the chart just a bit down the read with a really clean look at media deals for all Big 12 members. To summarize the real aim of the piece: 1) ESPN buys out the Longhorn Network; 2) ESPN "convinces" the Big 12 to add UCF, USF, Memphis & Cincinnati, connects the quartet to four Fox RSNs; 3) Pool rights, leverage RSNs & a rebranded LHN to the Big 12 Network. "As for when this might all go down, we just have no idea. It depends on how quickly ESPN can convince Texas and the Big 12 to start the process." (link)

Before you set those New Year's resolutions, heed this advice from TED Director of Social Media and Audience Development Rawls: 1. Choose a goal that matters, not just an easy win; 2. Focus on the process, not the outcome; 3. Frame your goals positively; and 4. Prepare for failure (in a good way). (link) Rawls takes it a step further in a separate post with the company's Social Content Manager Fawal, and suggests nine creative resolutions, each with an accompanying TED Talk on the topic (link).

The Charlotte Observer's Carter: "The conflict between college athletics and academics and, in particular, between athletics and class attendance, is as old as college sports themselves. And yet it’s one that has become magnified amid athletic conferences that span entire American coasts, as the ACC does, and sports schedules that have expanded in both time and distance." Carter looks specifically at the Duke Women's Soccer team, which had to miss three days of classes to accommodate a Thursday night match at Notre Dame this season. Duke Anthropology Professor Starn: "Athletes in my big introductory course this semester have missed almost a hundred classes between them. They are delightful, hard-working kids, but they don’t have time to do much more than pass. You can’t get much from a class missing so many lectures. Athletes do not have time for semester study abroad; writing for the school paper; joining student government. We give our athletes an impoverished imitation of a real college experience so that Duke can win a few more golf tournaments." Lots more, including perspectives from student-athletes and administrators. (link)
Forbes contributor Cook points to recent stats tweeted by NCAA Research that show the state of early recruiting, particularly among females. At least 20% of female prospective student-athletes in eight different sports were contacted by a college recruiter before entering high school: Basketball (47%), Softball (43%), Gymnastics (39%), Lacrosse (37%), Soccer (37%), Volleyball (37%), Field Hockey (26%) and Golf (20%). Further, a third or more of females in DI Softball, Gymnastics, Lacrosse and Soccer verbally committed by their sophomore year in high school. Not surprisingly, female student-athletes are now more likely to transfer than their male counterparts. As for male recruitment, only three DI sports reported more than 20% of prospects were contacted before high school: Basketball (34%), Lacrosse (30%) and Golf (20%). (link)
Arguably the FBS feel good story of the year is at New Mexico State as the Aggies ended a 57-year bowl draught with an overtime Arizona Bowl win over Utah State. An estimated 25K NMSU fans made the trip to Tucson from Las Cruces as AD Moccia said, "my goodness what a turnout." Aggies HC Martin: "I didn’t think it could get any better than the win over South Alabama, but it was. In football, this can’t be the end of the story. This has to be the beginning of the story." (link, link)
Like Nebraska FB HC Frost, new Tennessee boss Pruitt is juggling two jobs. Unlike Frost, part of Pruitt's focus is of the College Football Playoff variety. However, the situation is not abnormal for Alabama as former DC & current Georgia HC Smart did the same thing two years ago. Standout defensive student-athlete Fitzpatrick: "They were gone for a couple weeks. They missed one or two practices, and now they’re back. It’s like they were never gone." For his part, when asked about the challenge this week, Pruitt has noted he wants the focus to stay on the Crimson Tide student-athletes who will take the field on Monday night. (link)
More HC & Personnel Notes: USA Today's Berkowitz continues to track bonus totals as the bowl season rolls along. Ohio State's Meyer banks $350K, Bucks AD Smith with $55K. Kentucky's Stoops totals $250K, outgoing Arizona State HC Graham at $266,667, NC State's Doeren with $200K in on-field incentives. (link); Another look, this one from Yahoo's Thamel on the "risks" taken by Georgia & Oklahoma leadership in the pair's respective FB HC hires over the past two years. (link); If LSU parts ways with OC Canada, it'll owe the one-year coordinator $3M. $3M buyout... for a coordinator. (link); Georgia boss Smart on working for Alabama HC Saban: "I worked for him for 10 years and never realized how hard that seat is until I did it. You take it for granted when you're working for him. When you did your job and did your job to the fullest, he wasn't ranting and raving at you. He was driven. He wanted to win. We had that in common." More. (link); New Arizona State FB AC Pierce previously tweeted to promote a sports gambling entity. You can guess how the media responded. (link); Is there any Head Strength & Conditioning Coach who also has an Assoc. FB HC title? Tis the case at Louisiana now. (link); Did you know former LSU FB personnel lead/GM Thomas was represented by CAA? Neither did I. Sounds like he could land at Ole Miss. (link)

Everyone has a podcast these days as active & passive listening to the growing content type continues to surge. Ad Results Media has clients who spend more on ads in pods than on traditional radio & have seen some show rates increase by a staggering 4,000%. More perspective: "The wider industry’s ad revenue reflects this growth: between 2016 and 2017, ad revenue grew 85 percent and is expected to reach more than $220 million by the end of 2017." (link)

Apparently a Louisiana legislator called LSU Prez Alexander & threatened to pull funding for the university early this year if Tiger FB student-athletes kneeled for the National Anthem. Of course, in many instances student-athletes aren't even on the field for the anthem. The nugget was part of a larger opinion piece from WaPo on Republican attitudes toward colleges & universities these days. LSU Interim VP for Communications Droddy: "I can confirm the phone call occurred, but we won’t name the person, as that was an unfortunate comment that is better left in the past. We hope that in the future, LSU’s state appropriations will be tied to its performance in the classrooms and laboratories and its economic contributions to our state." (link - LSU, link - WaPo)
San Diego AD McGillis is pushing to create the largest pep band in college hoops, says of the 81-member crew, "It'll happen. I hope that there’s a day that they take up the entire sideline and they’re crossing both benches." It's part of USD's push to enhance the game atmosphere for Toreros' hardwood programs & create a home court advantage in Jenny Craig Pavilion. MBB HC Smith: "You go to a concert, to a game, there’s energy. That’s fun. There’s an entertainment side and social side of it. I think it builds community, which is important for our university and important for our Linda Vista community. [...] You have to get some momentum. You have to get some people excited to get them in the stands. That means you have to win. We haven’t done that on our end. We haven’t merited people coming to every home game." USD currently sits at 10-3 (1-0). (link)
Staying in sunny San Diego, San Diego State boss Wicker says he's having "good conversations with the mayor’s office about extending our lease" at SDCCU Stadium. However, historical tenant, the Holiday Bowl & its leaders are having conversations with San Diego Padres leadership about the potential of moving the annual post-season kick to Petco Park. Padres Executive Chairman Fowler: "It’s not a simple answer. The city and SDSU need to make some decisions … but, if the Bowl Association wants to move to Petco at some point, we will figure it out." (link)
Carl and Belinda Vincent, two Louisiana softball fans, have filed a defamation lawsuit against the university for its investigation into former Softball HC Lotief. The Vincents names appeared in media reports indicating they were the "fans expressing concern with Coach Mike's behavior," but the couple's lawyer says no one who conducted the investigation against Lotief contacted the Vincents to verify the validity of the claims. The suit further blames UL for not redacting the Vincents names, like they did other witnesses. Subpoenas were delivered to the school, Prez Savoie, AD Maggard and Deputy AD/SWA Leger and the Vincents seek "compensation for damages they sustained from the negligence of the university." (link)
Also Noticed: Check out Alabama's Crimson Tide Recovery Zone powered by NormaTec. Director of Sports Medicine Allen in the video spotlight. (link); James Madison brass think up to 10K Dukes fans will turn up in Frisco for the FCS National Championship Game. North Dakota State supporters will also certainly attend in droves. Toyota Stadium holds 15,500 this year, down 5K due to construction. Outcome: A hot secondary ticket market. (link); Iowa State AD Pollard says the Cyclones sold 15,600 Liberty Bowl tickets in 96 hours as Cyclone fans are partying in Memphis. (link); Here's ESPN's CFP animation package. Neat. (link)
